Lucy's Day is a Slovak tradition connected to magic. On this night, women and girls dress in white and sweep houses with brooms to sweep away bad powers while remaining silent. From Lucy's Day until Christmas, each night is believed to have its own power. Single girls perform divination rituals, such as writing suitors' names on pieces of bread to burn each day until Christmas, revealing their future groom. They may also test eggs laid on Lucy's Day in water on Christmas to predict their groom's profession. Some girls sink apples in water to curse boys who have not courted them, believing the first boy who speaks to them in church will be their husband.
