John 13:34-35 A new

I have loved you, that you

this all will know that you are
My disciples, if you have love
for one another.”
LOVE ONE ANOTHER
A. N.T. writers exhorted believers to engage in
specific activities that would enable the body of
Christ to function effectively & to grow spiritually.
B. “one another” is found 89 times in the N.T. Paul
uses it 40 times.
C. The “one another” exhortations, in the N.T.,
actually demonstrates love in action.
D. The love that Jesus and the apostles talk so
much about is “agape” love. Paul describes this
love in I Cor. 13.
E. Tonight we will look at some of the teachings of
Jesus and His disciples on this topic.
I. WHAT JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT
“LOVING ONE ANOTHER”
A. It is a command – Jn. 15:12 “This is My
commandment, that you love one another; as I have
loved you.”
B. It is a new command – Jn. 13: 34,35 “A new
commandment I give to you, that you love one
another; as I have loved you…”
C. It is the second greatest commandment – Matthew
22:37-40 Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the
LORD your God with all your heart, with all your
soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and
great commandment. 39 And the second is like it:
'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 On
these two commandments hang all the Law and the
Prophets."
II. WHAT PETER TAUGHT ABOUT
“LOVING ONE ANOTHER”
A. It is supreme – I Pet. 4:8 “And above all
things have fervent love among
yourselves…”
B. It is a fervent love – I Pet. 4:8
C. It is to be done with a pure heart – I Pet.
1:22 “…love one another fervently with a
pure heart.”

III. WHAT PAUL TAUGHT ABOUT
“LOVING ONE ANOTHER”
A. A fulfillment of the law – Rom. 13:8 “love one
another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the
law.”
B. Service is a function of love – Gal. 5:13 “…through
love serve one another…”
C. Bearing with one another is a function of love –
Eph.4:2 “…bearing with one another in love…”
D. It is important – Col. 3:14 “Do all these things; but
most important, love each other. Love is the thing

A. It is a command - I Jn. 3:23 “And this is His
commandment…love one another, as He gave
us commandment.”
B. It must be practiced to prevent stumbling – I Jn.
2:10 “He who loves his brother abides in the
light, and there is no cause for stumbling in
him.”
C. It is a mark of divine sonship – I Jn. 3:10
“…whoever does not practice righteousness is
not of God, nor is he who does not love his
brother…”
D. We must practice love to be in the light – I Jn.
2:10 “He who loves his brother abides in the
light…”

“LOVING ONE ANOTHER”
E. We must practice it to be of God, to be born
of God, and to know God – I Jn. 4:7,8
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love
is of God; and everyone who loves is born
of God and knows God.”
