Handout for workshop 14, 'Working with others towards greater coherence in CPD.' Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), GTC Scotland National Education Conference, 28 May 2009.
In this workshop we explore the steps taken by SQA to enhance teachers' understanding of the assessment process by providing CPD.
A key feature of the approach taken was to link with local authorities and key education agencies such as GTCS and LT Scotland. This was to ensure that the training being offered fitted a coherent model both practically and conceptually.

Pre-Service Teacher Education at Osaka University: A Reflective Report on the...Mehrasa Alizadeh
Pre-service teacher education is highly important at research-focused universities. At such institutions, training is mostly centered on conducting research while there is minimal focus on educating students in course design and teaching. To bridge this gap, the Center for Education in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Teaching and Learning Support Division at Osaka University has established an advanced liberal arts program called the Future Faculty Program (FFP). This program targets graduate students wishing to pursue a career in academia. Having completed the program herself, the presenter will provide the audience with a reflective report on the FFP, its strengths and limitations.
Our Institute provides actin research grants every year to empower and enable staff to become innovate educators.
According to Bass (2012) the innovation and disruption goes hand in hand when staff are supported to become risk
takers and reflective practitioners. While the grants are designed to encourage the teachers to become innovators in
the education space, it is also beneficial for them to become reflective practitioners. This year’s participants are encouraged to record their reflections and support the development of their project in a Mahara ePortflio. This will
enable them to share and reflect on a strong repository of their materials. It also allows them to be selective in how,
and who they share their material with. The participants were introduced to the portflios through face to face training sessions. They were also provided with documentating and additional support as they worked through their project. Bass, R. (2012). Distributing ourselves: The problem of learning in higher educatin. Educause Review, 47(2), 23 -33
Paul has a teaching background and has now moved into designing eLearning. He is a strong advocate for reflective practice and is
a keen user of the Mahara ePortflio. Paul has been a co-lead of the Actin Research Project mentioned in the description. He ran
the training sessions, provided support and looked to improve the use of ePortflios by the participants in the Actin Research project.
