  • #4  Planning 2010 LAUNCHED IN APRIL 2013 2.4 MILLION DIGITIZED CULTURAL HERITAGE ITEMS FROM 500 INSTITUTIONS covering 11 states AT 1 YEAR (2014) THOSE NUMBERS MORE THAN DOUBLED To 7 MILLION ITEMS FROM 1,200 INSTITUTIONS covering 15 states January 2015 released Strategic Plan for 2015-17 3 Priorities: Technology –built out technology platform Content- Complete the Service / Content Hub Network Outreach- To other areas particularly Education. UPDATE on progress ANNOUNCED –DPLAFEST April 2016-in Washington D.C. At LOC DPLAFest brings together 100s of digital enthusiasts, community leaders, & digital preservation practitioners for 2 days of active workshops, discussions, hackathons and collective activities.
  • #5  Service & Content Hubs Over 13 Million Items From 1,900 Institutions COVERING 22 STATES Europeana- European Digital Cultural Heritage Umbrella Alliance with LOC
  • #6  (LARGE) DPLA content hubs are large libraries, museums, archives, or other digital repositories that maintain a one-to-one relationship with the DPLA. Content hubs, as a general rule, provide more than 200,000 unique metadata records that resolve to digital objects (online texts, photographs, manuscript material, art work, etc.) to the DPLA, and commit to maintaining and enhancing those records as needed.  (SMALLER) DPLA service hubs are state, regional, or other collaborations that host, aggregate, or otherwise bring together digital objects from libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions. State and regional hubs agree to collect content that describes their local history, but also content about the US broadly and, when available, international topics. Each service hub offers its partners services that range from professional development, digitization, metadata creation or enhancement, to hosting or metadata aggregation. They may also provide community outreach programs to increase users’ awareness of digital content of local relevance.
  • #7 Over 13 Million Items nearly 5.5 times the number at launch Derive from 1900 institutions covering 22 states doubling territory originally covered. Plan is to eventually cover all 50 states.
  • #8 DPLA continues its partnership with the Boston Public Library where it has been housed since its inception. BPL’s recently completed 78 million $ renovation of the Copley Square Central Branch office included the creation of the Digital Partners Suite which DPLA now shares with 2 hubs the Digital Commonwealth and the Internet Archive’ Boston Scanning Center as well as the BPL’s Digital Services Team. At 6,000 square feet, the Digital Partners space represents BPL’s continued commitment to digitization, digital services, and digital collaboration with state-of-the art facilities, technology, and room to expand.
  • #9  For DPLA, the new office space represents a huge step forward and is designed to meet the needs of our growing team.   access to a conference room wired with a large screen and a webcam to facilitate easy collaboration between our staff in Boston and staff working across the country.  Two smaller private conference rooms allow for breakout meetings and small team video calls.  When cross team collaboration is in order, our open floor plan now provides a great layout for both conversation and individualized work space.
  • #10 Thanks to generous grants and matched funding the team is growing . Amazing what they have accomplished with the initial skeletal staff
  • #12  Dan Cohen , Executive Director Emily Gore Director for Content Samanatha Gibson Engagement & Use Co-ordinator Franky Abbot Curation & Education Strategist
  • #13 Part of the Strategic plan was to expand the DPLA’s technology platform One way w this platform is enriched is though DPLA’s open API Application Platform Interface which allows programmers to create apps to use in conjunction with the digital content found at the DPLA. The number of Apps available has increased significantly and they cover a wide range of uses. 1,000 keys to developeers
  • #14 Another popular area that has been expanded is to Exhibitions. These 30 Curated Exhibitions are organized around broad themes some more applicable and better suited to Education than other but all are content rich.
  • #16 At the DPLA Fest ---several announcement of particular interest to educators And institutions that serve students. First Expansion of the Primary Source Sers Initiative started in 2013 with focus group meeting in Boston to discuss best practices and applications for the inclusion of primary resource sets. Out of this meeting a curation group convened and developed 35 sets with a second group subsequently meeting to build out the remaining 65 bringing the total to 50.
  • #17 Sets curated around a wide range of themes & broad spectrum of curriculum from history to science and language arts. Aligned with educational standards Each set includes a topic overview, 15 primary sources, links to related resources and a teaching guide. Available through PBS Learning Media and the Learning Registry
  • #23  The 2nd item of interest to Educators and those who serve children is the Open eBooks initiative and Open eBooks eReader app. Open eBooks was launched through the joint efforts of the DPLA, NYPL, First Book and Baker and Taylor to Make thousands of popular best selling books available to children in need for free. Open eBooks was launched by 1st Lady Michelle Obama in February of this year. Since the Fe kick off there has been a huge response and over 1.4 million access have been distributed. The DPLA assembled a Curation Corp who selected titles designed to provide a diverse, compelling and appropriate collection of titles for elementary,, middle and high school students. Easy to access, navigate and search
  • #24 Finally , the DPLA in collaboration with Europeana, Creative Commons and Kennisland announced the launch of Rights Statements .org. Addressing the issue of digital content reproduction rights is one of the goals set out in thee DPL A 3 year strategic plan. RightStatements.org brings 12 standardized rights statements for describing the copyright status for cultural heritage materials and the technical structure for those statements. Enables Cultural Heritage Institutions to communicate the re-use status of digital materials in their collections Provides Clear vocabulary to convey copyright & re-use status to patrons & provides technical support for their adoption.
