The long jump is an Olympic track and field event where athletes run down a runway and leap as far as possible into a sand pit. Competitors must take off from behind a board on the runway and cannot start the jump with any part of their foot past the foul line. The technique involves gradually accelerating to maximum speed during the approach, conserving speed in the last two strides, and using lower body strength to create vertical lift on takeoff while maintaining control and balance in the air. Santiago Lamela Tobío was a successful Spanish long jumper who won silver at the 1999 World Indoor Championships with a jump of 8.56 meters. World records in the men's and women's long jump events are also recognized.
