Question 1
In what ways does your media product, use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
Layout
• For the layout of my magazine I was aiming for it to
look like an upmarket music magazine that would look
sophisticated yet formal enough for the teenage target
audience to feel like they are mature enough to buy it.
I wanted a clean structure for the layout so that it is
easy on the eye and the readers are able to
understand the magazine when reading it and can
clearly see what title goes with what story. To help
with this I included thin rectangular shapes to feature
on my magazine front cove and content page.
• For the inside of the magazine I chose to layout
everything evenly so that the magazine did not look
cluttered or unprofessional. I tried my best to include
enough images and text for the magazine to not look
like a novel with all the text but not look childish with
too many images.
• Columns were set out for the double page spread so it
was easier to read the chunks of text. The columns
were also broken up by images and text boxes that
included quotes.
Written Content
• In the written content on the front cover and content page I tried to
use persuasive writing as this would persuade my target audience
to but this magazine.
• For the written content on the double page spread I created I chose
to follow the story of a boy band releasing a new album. Instead of
writing an interview with the band I chose to do a review on the
album.
• When writing this emotive language was used to promote the new
album. Also the review of the album led on to talk about other
music related things for the band like the tour information and
when it is they are planning to release the dates.
• I decided on these topics and choices of language techniques
because when reading through and researching music magazines I
found that these techniques and story lines occurred a lot.
Magazine Type
• For my magazine I made the
decision to not narrow it down to
one specific music genre because I
wanted it to convey all and be
about the music industry and
what is hot and what is not in that
present week. I got this inspiration
and idea from the magazine
Billboard. I decided on this idea
because I found when I was
reading the magazine that it was
more interesting than others that
just focused on one.
• Through the attempt of conveying
this to the audience I think I did it
by making the text, images,
stories, models and also the color
scheme not all to a specific
stereotypical genre.
Indie boy band
Female solo
artist, rebellious
pop star.
Masthead
• Regarding the decisions for the masthead of
my magazine I came to the decision that it
was firstly going to be called Fusion. Once I
had come up with the name of the magazine I
had to come to a decision on the font type,
font size and where the masthead was going
to be placed on the screen. As the name of
my magazine is quite a long name for a
magazine I decided for it to be central on the
front cover. Unlike other already existing
famous music magazines that have the
masthead featured in the corner of the
magazine front cover like Q. I chose for my
magazine name to be placed in the middle
like on the magazine Billboard and Rolling
Stones. For the font of my magazine
masthead I used a font called masthead which
I thought went well with the magazine as I
don’t think it looks like it is for a specific
music genre but could be portrayed for any.
Also the boldness of the title would be
memorable for the audience and so when
seen they will recognise it.
Models/Costumes and Props
• In my magazine I wanted it to feature a variety of
different looking males and females. I chose people
from around my college that I though would best
portray the image I am trying to make.
• For my front cover the decisions as Francesca as a
model was because when handing out a survey about
who people would most want to see on a front cover
the most popular was a independent female solo artist,
and s this is what I did, I chose Frankie to model out of
the three girls I had in mind and we took some images.
The costumes I chose for Frankie to wear was very
simple. In the two images she features in in the
magazine she is simply shown on the front cover and on
he image she is on on the content page she has
removed the leather jacket she is wearing on the front
cover and is instead holding a candy apple red maple
electric guitar.
• There are two other images shown on the content
page. One of a male model on his own with a branded
jumper that is looked at to be indie his hair messy.
Through this image the conveying of a male solo artist
that represent the music genre indie rock. The
inspiration I got for this idea was from the famous
musician Jake Bugg.
• The other image I used on the content page was of
three males. They are the representation of the
already existing band The Vamps. They are a British
pop band with a bit of an edge. The look I was going
for on this image was musical, this is why the prop of
a mic was used in the image. There clothing is pretty
casual showing how they don’t care what others
think of them and they are who they are and they are
not out to impress.
• For the images that I used in my double page spread
and the decisions I made on my double page spread I
chose it to be a four male band member group. I got
the inspiration for this band idea from the band 5
Seconds Of Summer which is an edgy Australian pop
group. No props feature in these images I wanted
them to be simple and make them look professional.
The models costumes are all simple but different. I
chose for there to be three brown haired males and
one blonde to break it up like in 5 Seconds Of
Summer. I wanted the group to look in contrast with
each other with their looks with one band member
looking fairly indie, one smart looking and groomed
and the other two very relaxed looking. For their
costumes I wanted them to look well dressed but
effortlessly as my magazine is aimed at a upmarket
audience and for the price paid for my magazine I
want it to look professional enough.
Mise-en-Scene of Images
• When taking my images I decided to take them in different
places dependent on the model and what artist I am trying to
convey through the image. Some of my images were shot in the
studio with a plain white background and some images were
shot outside in front of a disheveled looking brick wall and some
images shot on a plain white/cream wall outside. The reason I
chose to shoot images in different locations is because I wanted
a variety for my magazine audience to look at and not become
bored. Through my research on Billboard magazine I looked at
how wide of a range of difference through images there were
and I seen through the images as the magazine is aimed at a
audience that take a liking/interest into a lot of music genres the
images all varied a lot to do with mise-en-scene. So I attempted
to do the same and I think it went well.
Title Font and Style
• For my title of the magazine I used a font that I
specifically downloaded from the website DaFont. The
font I chose was called KGHAPPY. The reason I chose
this font is because I thought that it was different from
any other magazines font I have ever seen before and
is interesting, not a plain one. This meaning it should
stand out when on the shelf and people will be more
drawn in to buy it. For the rest of the general content
of my magazine I used the fonts Myriad Pro, Agency FB,
Calibri and Bell MT. All these font went well with my
magazine and looked professional on my work.

I decided on this idea because I found when I was reading the magazine that it was more interesting than others that just focused on one. • Through the attempt of conveying this to the audience I think I did it by making the text, images, stories, models and also the color scheme not all to a specific stereotypical genre. Indie boy band Female solo artist, rebellious pop star.
  • 5. Masthead • Regarding the decisions for the masthead of my magazine I came to the decision that it was firstly going to be called Fusion. Once I had come up with the name of the magazine I had to come to a decision on the font type, font size and where the masthead was going to be placed on the screen. As the name of my magazine is quite a long name for a magazine I decided for it to be central on the front cover. Unlike other already existing famous music magazines that have the masthead featured in the corner of the magazine front cover like Q. I chose for my magazine name to be placed in the middle like on the magazine Billboard and Rolling Stones. For the font of my magazine masthead I used a font called masthead which I thought went well with the magazine as I don’t think it looks like it is for a specific music genre but could be portrayed for any. Also the boldness of the title would be memorable for the audience and so when seen they will recognise it.
  • 6. Models/Costumes and Props • In my magazine I wanted it to feature a variety of different looking males and females. I chose people from around my college that I though would best portray the image I am trying to make. • For my front cover the decisions as Francesca as a model was because when handing out a survey about who people would most want to see on a front cover the most popular was a independent female solo artist, and s this is what I did, I chose Frankie to model out of the three girls I had in mind and we took some images. The costumes I chose for Frankie to wear was very simple. In the two images she features in in the magazine she is simply shown on the front cover and on he image she is on on the content page she has removed the leather jacket she is wearing on the front cover and is instead holding a candy apple red maple electric guitar. • There are two other images shown on the content page. One of a male model on his own with a branded jumper that is looked at to be indie his hair messy. Through this image the conveying of a male solo artist that represent the music genre indie rock. The inspiration I got for this idea was from the famous musician Jake Bugg.
  • 7. • The other image I used on the content page was of three males. They are the representation of the already existing band The Vamps. They are a British pop band with a bit of an edge. The look I was going for on this image was musical, this is why the prop of a mic was used in the image. There clothing is pretty casual showing how they don’t care what others think of them and they are who they are and they are not out to impress. • For the images that I used in my double page spread and the decisions I made on my double page spread I chose it to be a four male band member group. I got the inspiration for this band idea from the band 5 Seconds Of Summer which is an edgy Australian pop group. No props feature in these images I wanted them to be simple and make them look professional. The models costumes are all simple but different. I chose for there to be three brown haired males and one blonde to break it up like in 5 Seconds Of Summer. I wanted the group to look in contrast with each other with their looks with one band member looking fairly indie, one smart looking and groomed and the other two very relaxed looking. For their costumes I wanted them to look well dressed but effortlessly as my magazine is aimed at a upmarket audience and for the price paid for my magazine I want it to look professional enough.
  • 8. Mise-en-Scene of Images • When taking my images I decided to take them in different places dependent on the model and what artist I am trying to convey through the image. Some of my images were shot in the studio with a plain white background and some images were shot outside in front of a disheveled looking brick wall and some images shot on a plain white/cream wall outside. The reason I chose to shoot images in different locations is because I wanted a variety for my magazine audience to look at and not become bored. Through my research on Billboard magazine I looked at how wide of a range of difference through images there were and I seen through the images as the magazine is aimed at a audience that take a liking/interest into a lot of music genres the images all varied a lot to do with mise-en-scene. So I attempted to do the same and I think it went well.
  • 9. Title Font and Style • For my title of the magazine I used a font that I specifically downloaded from the website DaFont. The font I chose was called KGHAPPY. The reason I chose this font is because I thought that it was different from any other magazines font I have ever seen before and is interesting, not a plain one. This meaning it should stand out when on the shelf and people will be more drawn in to buy it. For the rest of the general content of my magazine I used the fonts Myriad Pro, Agency FB, Calibri and Bell MT. All these font went well with my magazine and looked professional on my work.
