The document provides details of a student's media studies project to create a music magazine. It includes research conducted on rock music genres and magazines like Kerrang! and NME. It outlines the target audience as dedicated rock fans aged 17-24. The log book discusses cover ideas with the masthead at the top and a star photo. A contents page and interview layout are also analyzed. The student aims to include in-depth music knowledge and promotion like competitor magazines.
This is my question 1 evaluation on the content page that I have created, I have compared this to my magazine of inspiration by Top of the Pops to see if the codes and conventions were similar.

Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him. Unfortunately, he passed away quite early but his wife, Rabia Begum, with the support of her son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, not only kept the institution in existence but also expanded it. As he grew up, Hakeem Abdul Hameed took on all responsibilities. After helping with his younger brother's upbringing and education, he included him in running the institution. Both brothers Hakeem Abdul Hameed and Hakim Mohammed

10. Genre research-Rock
• Biggest rock magazine is kerrang!
• It is the UKs best selling music magazine.
• Rock was the most consumed music genre of
2014. Based on “Nielson Music” data, rock music
made a total of 29% of music consumption of all
fronts including, album and single sales and
streaming. This percentage is higher than any
other genre with genres such as pop claiming
around only 15% and hip-hop around 17%.
11. Genre research continued
A lot of rock magazines follow the same
kind of layout, for example I’ve used two
magazine covers to compare in the form of
“Kerrang!” and “Classic Rock”. They both
use a large masthead with contrasting
colors in order the grab the audiences
attention. Another similarity is the as well
as having the smaller story headlines next
to the main star appeal, they also have a
small line at the top of their respective
covers with a sort of preview into more
content they contain inside in order to make
the reader more interested in what's in the
magazine. On both covers, in front of the
main star is the name of the artist in bold
lettering, adding to the star appeal by
letting the audience know who they are.
There is also similar puff promotion on both
magazines in the form of a free CD and 5
free posters.
13. Magazine for my Research
The mast head in this
magazine is enlarged
like mine in order to
stand out and grab the
audiences attention.
While doing so, it also
drags attention to the
star appeal in the form
of a close-up shot of
Mike Skinner. It also
contains another
image of star appeal in
the form of a separate
story relating to David
Bowie.
14. Target Audience –The target audience for NME magazine can be denoted as
well educated fans of rock based bands and new music. The main concept of
the magazine would also suggest that the buyers of the magazine would be
regular buyers and dedicated music fans. The majority of the target audience
would be UK based as the magazine is only published in the UK. It can also be
presumed the magazine is aimed equally towards both genders, although it is
mostly consumed by men making up 73% of the buyers. The average age of
readers was also found to be 25.
What is the USP of this magazine? -From the research completed into this
media product, I think the USP would be in-depth knowledge on music, film,
technology and fashion due to the weekly frequency of issues. It also uses the
convention of having a dominating masthead in the top left corner, always
being the logo. The Dominant image will always cover the whole page and will
be behind all headlines. There is also always a plus column on the side listing
bands featured in the magazine, possibly reaching out to a wider audience.
16. Target Audience – The target audience for Kerrang! magazine can be denoted
as fans of rock and indie music. The average age of readers is noted as 22 but
attracts audiences mainly in the range of 17-24. the audience is also
predominately male, heavy rock fans.
Another interesting fact is that mostly they will be dedicated music fans who
are 5 times more likely to attend a rock gig.
What is the USP of this magazine?-From the research completed into this
media product, I think the USP can be in-depth knowledge of the rock genre
like NME that the audience is attracted to. For the certain conventions of the
magazine, it is notable that the mast head (logo) is scratchy looking which
also fits in with the rock theme. It also looks like it has been smashed which
reinforces the rock/edgy image. There is also always a bit of puff promotion
near the top of the magazine which will also attract its target audience as the
competition will appeal to more rock fans.
17. Ideas for Magazine Cover image

magazine to grab
attention. Basic
outlines were drawn

of the final copy. The

the main star “Wilson”
and it will be a mid

examples of popular
and successful
magazine covers. I also
