The document discusses the target audience and design conventions for a rock music magazine. The target audience is mainly younger people who are fans of rock music, regardless of other factors like class, race, gender or religion. On the front cover, an edgy font is used for the masthead and tagline to appeal to rock fans. The cover image features a star with a serious expression at a rock concert to convey the mood of the genre. Purple bubbles are used to highlight side stories and stand out on shelves. 1. Question 2
According to Hartley’s seven subjectivities, my target audience can be separated into several
different groups. Age wise, the magazine is aimed towards a younger demographic as the
music contained within the magazine is more popular among the younger population. As for
areas such as religion race and gender, the magazine is open to all types as it is not aimed
towards any specific gender, race or religion. It may appeal more to a western
culture/nationality as rock music is more popular in these parts of the world. Class wise, the
magazine can be aimed towards anyone who is a fan of the music genre therefore meaning
it is also not aimed towards any specific class as it is also a formal magazine. From this I can
say that my target audience is mainly younger people who are fans of the rock genre, devoid
of class, race, gender or religion.
Conventions: Front cover
For the masthead I used a not so serious font which also looks “edgy” in order to appeal to
both the younger fans and rock fans in general, I also used the same font throughout the
magazine apart from the double page spread.
As for the main image, I made my star give off a moody image as to atone to the more
serious tone and mood of the rock genre. I did this by making him pull a serious expression,
crossing his arms as well as wearing a black jacket, as the colour black is usually associated
with bad things. I also added a background of a rock concert in order to create the illusion
that he it is a rock concert as it’s a dim lit room with flashing lights as well as ecstatic fans
that seem to be moving in an energetic manner. As for the side stories, I used the same font
from the masthead and tagline and placed them in a purple bubble in order to stand out,
which could also be appealing as it stands out to the fans that may see it on a shelf.
Contents
For the contents I largely used the same techniques I used from the front cover such as the
purple boxes and the font. For the contents picture however, for the main image I used a
brighter colour scheme taking the picture outside instead. This is used to create an
alternating theme that rock music can also sometimes present a brighter image about
certain subjects. The leather jacket is again added in order to add a Rock and rebellious
image to the cover star, adding to the star appeal.
