Dr. David Wood is an expert in linked data and semantic technologies. He has founded two companies - @π (Plugged In Software) in 2002 which developed RDF databases and management systems, and 3RoundStones in ongoing which focuses on linked data management. Data grids are an emerging technology that enables the formation of sharable collections from data distributed across multiple storage resources. The integrated Rule Oriented Data System (iRODS) is a data grid developed by the DICE Center at UNC-CH. The iRODS data grid enforces management policies that control properties of the collection. Examples of policies include retention, disposition, distribution, replication, metadata extraction, time-dependent access controls, data processing, data redaction, and integrity checking. Policies can be defined that automate administrative functions (file migration and replication) and that validate assessment criteria (authenticity, integrity, chain of custody). iRODS is used to build data sharing environments, digital libraries, and preservation environments. The iRODS data grid is used at UNC-CH to support the Carolina Digital Repository, the LifeTime Library for the School of Information and Library Science, data grids for the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI), collaborations within North Carolina, and both national and international data sharing. At RENCI, the TUCASI data grid supports shared collections between UNC-CH, Duke, and NCSU. The RENCI data grid is federated with ten other data grids including the National Climatic Data Center, the Texas Advanced Computing Center data grid, and the Ocean Observatories Initiative data grid. International applications include the CyberSKA Square Kilometer Array for radio astronomy and the French National Institute for Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics. The collections that are assembled may contain hundreds of millions of files, and petabytes of data. A specific goal is the integration of institutional repositories with the national data infrastructure that is being assembled under the NSF DataNet program. The software is available as an open source distribution from http://irods.diceresearch.org.
In this paper we introduce the MADlib project, including the background that led to its beginnings, and the motivation for its open source nature. We provide an overview of the library’s architecture and design patterns, and provide a description of various statistical methods in that context.

Scientific workflows have been used almost universally across scientific domains, and have underpinned some of the most significant discoveries of the past several decades. Many of these workflows have high computational, storage, and/or communication demands, and thus must execute on a wide range of large-scale platforms, from large clouds to upcoming exascale high-performance computing (HPC) platforms. These executions must be managed using some software infrastructure. Due to the popularity of workflows, workflow management systems (WMSs) have been developed to provide abstractions for creating and executing workflows conveniently, efficiently, and portably. While these efforts are all worthwhile, there are now hundreds of independent WMSs, many of which are moribund. As a result, the WMS landscape is segmented and presents significant barriers to entry due to the hundreds of seemingly comparable, yet incompatible, systems that exist. As a result, many teams, small and large, still elect to build their own custom workflow solution rather than adopt, or build upon, existing WMSs. This current state of the WMS landscape negatively impacts workflow users, developers, and researchers. In this talk, I will provide a view of the state of the art and some of my previous research and technical contributions, and identify crucial research challenges in the workflow community.

The W3C Data Shapes Working Group has been chartered in September 2014 to "Produce a language for defining structural constraints on RDF graphs and define graph topologies for interface specification, code development, and data verification." It will do for RDF what XML Schema did for XML.
This brief was presented as part of the RDF-AP Special Session at DCMI 2014, the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Conference.
Open Data is the idea that "certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control”. Open Data follows similar “open” concepts that have proven to be valuable in the information economy such as Open Standards, Open Source Software, Open Content and has been followed more recently by variations on the theme such as Open Science and Open Government.
Open Data allows information of common value to be reused without needing to be recreated. The economic benefits of Open Data include cost reduction, organizational efficiencies and the facilitation of commonly held understanding. The costs of implementing Open Data deployment strategies tend to be iterative on top of existing information infrastructure.
This presentation will describe Open Data and its place in the ecosystem of economic and governmental discourse.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The problem: No coordinated view of clinical study information. Information is distributed across departments, subsidiaries and government data sources.

3 Round Stones and AstraZeneca created a system to allow coordinated views of distributed clinical trial information. The system extended the Callimachus
Project, an Open Source management system for Linked Data.
Persistent URLs, or PURLs, were used to provide globally unique and resolvable identifiers for each clinical study. The PURL concept was extended to enable
PURLs to have multiple targets and for the results of each target to undergo arbitrary transformation. PURLs which have such capabilities are called Active PURLs.
Information sources relevant to clinical studies were identified, regardless of whether their location was internal or external to the pharmaceutical company's
network. Active PURLs were used to resolve data sources having HTTP endpoints capable of returning XML or textual results. Each information source is
dynamically transformed into Resource Description Framework (RDF) formats and all sources' results then merged into a single, temporary graph of RDF data.
Information is rendered to end users as coordinated HTML descriptions regarding each clinical trial using the Callimachus template engine. Machine-readable
versions of the data are also available.
How semantic technologies help
Linked Data techniques can help to address both the availability of clinical trial information and provide a means to build effective information systems using it.
Linked Data techniques allow for "cooperation without coordination". Publishers of data provide context for use by third parties in other portions of a distributed
enterprise. Users of Linked Data can combine information from multiple sources. Subsequent publication can create a virtuous circle of positive feedback, allowing
researchers, informaticists and support staff to collaboratively and distributively build a reusable knowledge base.
