GeoClue is a D-BUS service that allows applications to access location information easily across different location technologies like GPS, GSM, WiFi and IP addresses. It treats location retrieval the same way as time or date, regardless of the location format. The W3C geolocation API allows JavaScript to retrieve user location in a browser, while tools like GeoCMS and Magic Ink demonstrate using location data for maps, proximity queries and visualizations. Examples are given of desktop applications leveraging GeoClue to add location-based features for photos, friends and more.
