Virtual and augmented reality technologies can support remote collaboration on engineering projects. Augmented reality can allow a construction supervisor to see a remote piping engineer's views of a construction site in real-time. It may also enable a pipe stress engineer to visualize 3D designs directly over the real construction. These technologies could support training and reviewing engineering designs directly in the field. However, challenges remain in accurately integrating virtual and real content, enabling natural interactions between remote collaborators, and developing rendering methods that improve shared understanding of the environment.
