2. HISTORY
Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, San
Juan was an Ilocano settlement called
Dalandan, which is the name of the fruit
Citrus aurantium Linn. That grew
abundantly in the area.
3. HISTORY
Dr. Adriel Obar Meimban states in his book, La Union,
The Making of a Province, that three friar chroniclers
namely Julian Martin, Salvador Fron, and Elviro Perez
differ in opinion with regards to San Juan’s date of
foundation. Martin claimed San Juan was founded in 1806,
Font recorded 1803 while Perez claimed it was established
in 1585.
4. On March 2, 1850, San Juan
became part of the province
of La Union, when the
province was created by
Governor-General Antonio
Maria Blanco.
5. The town of San Juan, formerly called Baratao or Baltao, was
formally accepted as a Ministerio de Baratao. It was composed
of a federation of settlements of towns, namely the settlements
of Bauang, Mapatnag, Allangigan and Dayawan as well as the
settlements of San Miguel de Bacnotan, San Juan Bautista de
Baltao, San Guillermo de Dalangdang, San Vicente de Balanac
and a settlement named Bona or Boa. The center of the
Ministerio was at San Juan Bautista de Baltao, now San Juan.
6. Aside from the surfing industry, San Juan is also famous for its
pottery making industry where clay products made from the
indigenous dalikan (clay hearth) are produced.
Agriculture remains to be the main source of livelihood of the
people of San Juan. 1,765 hectares are planted with rice, 722
hectares with tobacco and corn and the rest of its agricultural
area are planted with vegetables and root crops.
7. GEOGRAPHY
San Juan is bounded on the north by the municipality of
Bacnotan along the Baroro River, and on the east by the
municipalities of San Gabriel and Bagulin along the Dasay-
Duplas-Nagyubuyuban Creek. On the south it is bounded
by the City of San Fernando and on the west by the South
China Sea.

Surfing Capital of the Northern
Philippines and is known for its
consistent intermediate quality surf
and two surfing seasons from July to
October and November to

9. COTTAGE INDUSTRIES
Pottery, blanket-weaving, basketry,
bamboo-craft, and broom-making are
produced as a folk-industry. Hollow
concrete blocks are manufactured in rural
villages for local building projects.
10. AGRICULTURE
Yellow corn is one of the most important
crops in San Juan, and is used as a raw material
for food and industrial products such as
starch, corn oil, beverages, gluten, snacks etc.
It constitutes about 50% of the feed for local
livestock and poultry enterprises. It was
nominated as the product for the One Town
One Product (OTOP) Philippines program of
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to
promote entrepreneurship and create jobs.
11. Population
San Juan is a coastal municipality in the province of La Union.
The municipality has a land area of 57.12 square kilometers or 22.05 square
miles which constitutes 3.81% of La Union’s total area. Its population as
determined by the 2020 Census was 40,507. This represented 4.93% of the
total population of La Union province, or 0.76% of the overall population of
the Ilocos Region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed
at 709 inhabitants per square kilometer or 1,837 inhabitants per square mile.

San Juan surf resort have a hotel, a restaurant, surf school and surf shop.

13. SURF SCHOOL
Fil-australian pro-surfer luke landrigan founded the San Juan surf
school in 2023 and until now, it still revels in its reputation as the
best surf school in the Philippines.

Float captain, kudo surf, vans, toms, pepper swim, fluid surf, the beach
republic, wear sundae, gwapitos, are just some of brands available at the
shop.
TAGPUAN SA SAN JUAN
Is a small food place located along urbiztondo road of the surfing town. It’s like a
common catery or also known as “Carienderia” in our language. Tagpuan sa San Juan
cultivates is not just the good food they serve, but also the concept of sharing love and
memories.

The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists. Bamboo
has proven to be a vital resource for it’s diverse, functional and
traditional uses.

San Juan is an agricultural town where rice, corn and
fish are the major products. Due to the influx to
tourists, especially the surfing enthusiasts, many
resorts and inns mushroomed along the coast.
