Living things can be distinguished from non-living things in several key ways:
- Living things grow, respire, reproduce, respond to their environment, and have a finite lifespan.
- Non-living things do not grow, respire, reproduce, respond, or have a lifespan.
- Examples of living things include plants, animals and humans. Examples of non-living things include natural objects like mountains and rivers, as well as man-made objects like furniture and vehicles.

THE LIVING ORGANISMS -CHARACTERISTICS AND HABITATS-3 CBSE-V CHAPTER-9BIOLOGY TEACHER
Organisms
An organism is simply defined as any living thing, ranging from microscopic bacteria to large elephants and everything in between.
Different types of plants and animals are found in different areas.
E.g. deserts have camel and cacti as plants. Beaches show coconut trees and crabs. Fishes and other marine animals inhabit the sea

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Things that we see around us can be divided
into two groups
Living Things Non Living Things
Some of the Non – living things are either natural or man made .
3. Things such as toys ,
vehicles, furniture ,paper
etc. are made by man
and so these things are
known as Man made
things.
Man made things
4. Natural Things
Things such as Sun ,mountains ,hills ,rivers ,plants , animals etc. are
made by nature and so they are known as Natural Things.
such as sun , moon ,mountains ,rivers etc. are non living things.
Things such as plants and animals are living things.
5. Living things and non living things are different from each other
in many ways. We can differentiate between them by
understanding the following features.
• Movement.
• Food and Water.
• Growth.
• Breathing.
• Feel Changes In Surroundings.
• Reproduction.
• Life Span.
6. Movement
Non living things do not move on their own .They need to be
pushed or pull.
All living things need to move from one place to another on their own in search of
food and shelter.
Human beings and animals such as cat
,dog ,cow etc. move from one place to
another with their legs. Fish use their fins
to swim , birds fly with the help of their
wings.
Plants are also living things . Though they
don’t move from one place to another
,but various parts move while being in
one place.
Eg: A sunflower always faces sun
7. FoodAnd Water
All living things need food and
water to grow . Food gives us
energy to work.
Non Livings do not need food and
water.
Green plants can make their own
food with the help of sunlight ,air
,water and chlorophyll.
8. Growth
All living beings grow in size . A
baby is born ,it is very small but
it grows into child , then boy or
girl and later into man or
woman.
Animals also grow .
Eg: A hen lays eggs which
develop into chicks and then into
hen.
Plants also grow.
Eg: A seed of a plant develops
into baby plant which grows into
big tree.
9. Breathing
All living beings breathe. They take in oxygen
and give out carbon dioxide. Humans and
most of the animals such as cow ,tiger
,giraffe etc. breathe through LUNGS.
Fish breathe through GILLS
Insects breathe through small hole known as
SPIRACLES present on their body
Plants breathe through small pores known as
STOMATA present on the leaves.
Lungs
10. Feel ChangesIn Surroundings
All living things can feel the changes around them .Sense organs in humans help them
to feel the changes in the surrounding.
We sweat and feel hot during summer. We carry
umbrella and wear raincoat to protect ourselves
from getting wet during rainy season.
We laugh when we are happy ,cry when we get
hurt or are sad.
Non living things do not feel.
Eg: A chair will never cry even if its burning
or a toy will never feel wet in water.
11. Reproduction
Reproduction is the process through which a
living being makes more of its own kind. For
eg. Humans give birth to a baby and animals to
its own kind.
12. Reproductionin Animals
Some animals like dog ,lion ,
giraffe etc. reproduce by
giving birth to young ones.
Some animals like hen , duck ,
fish etc. reproduce by laying
eggs
13. Reproductionin Plants
Plants are able to reproduce its own type with
their stem ,leaves, roots or seeds.
Through Seed
Through Stem Cutting
Through Root Cutting
14. Life Span
All living beings live up to certain age .This age limit is called life span.
The average life span of a human being is around 50 -60 years.
Non living things do not have a life span.
15. Summary
All things around us can be broadly divided into living things and non living things.
Natural things are made by nature. For e.g.. Sun ,trees ,animals ,rivers etc.
Man made things are made by man. For e.g.. buildings ,automobiles ,furniture
etc.
All living things grow , respire , feel ,reproduce ,need food and live for a certain
age.
Non - living things do not eat , grow ,respire ,feel or reproduce.
