Balys Sruoga was a Lithuanian writer who contributed to cultural journals from a young age. He studied literature in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and received his PhD from the University of Munich in 1924. After returning to Lithuania, he taught at Kaunas University and established a theatre seminar. Some of his notable dramas included "Milžino paunksmė" and "Radvila Perkūnas". During World War II, he was sent to a Nazi concentration camp along with other Lithuanian intellectuals. His best known work, "The Forest of the Gods", was based on his experiences in the concentration camp and revealed life there through irony and humor.
