Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space, launching aboard Vostok 6 in 1963. She was born in 1937 in Russia and grew up working in a textile mill after her father was killed in World War II. Tereshkova became interested in parachuting at a young age and later joined the Communist Party, leading to her selection to become the first woman cosmonaut in 1961.

She had 2 brothers. Her father was killed in the II
World War. She and her brothers worked in a
textile mill. She began school when she was 10. She
was interested in parachute jumping at an early age. The government had the idea to
make a flight carrying a woman in space. In 1961 she became the secretary of the
Komsomol (Union of Young Communists) and later joined the Communist Party of the
Soviet Union. On 1962, Valentina Tereshkova was selected to join the female
cosmonaut body. She was the first woman in the space.
