The listener enjoyed Judy Garland and Glee Cast's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for its relaxing lyrics and instrumentation. The song maintained a consistent relaxing mood throughout and featured a relatively low pitch for the singers' voices, soft dynamics, and a slow tempo that was not too slow. The rhythm was difficult to find but the thick texture did not draw attention away from the lead vocalist.

1. Listening Log
Date: September 3rd 2010
Name of music: Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Band/artist/composer: Judy Garland , Glee Cast
Reflection: What do you like about this music? Why?
I like the lyrics, and the musical instruments used, as it is relaxing.
What is the mood, does it change?
It is relaxing all the way. The mood does not change.
Comment on the musical elements (pitch, timbre, dynamics, tempo,
rhythm, texture, structure):
Pitch: The singers’ voice is relatively low.
Timbre: The instruments sound quite nice together.
Dynamics: The song is quite soft, and relaxing.
Tempo: The song is quite slow. But, it’s not too slow. It’s about the right
speed, in my opinion.
Rhythm: I like the rhythm of this song, but it is quite hard to find and follow.
Texture: The texture is quite thick, but not so much that the listener’s
attention is drawn away from the singer’s voice.
Structure: The song is about a person, singing about a land over a rainbow he
heard about a long time ago, in a lullaby, and how he longs to stay there. Most
of the verses of the song starts with the line “somewhere over the rainbow”,
indicating that he is describing this magical land.
