Linux was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds as an open source and free alternative to existing work systems like Minix. It simplified Unix internals and had features like open source code allowing users freedom in how they use the software, stable and effective operation inheriting from Unix, low cost as it could be obtained freely under GPL, and ability to independently run on workstations and servers providing full functionality.
