Proficient Handling and Restraint of the Laboratory Animal Rat (Rattus Norveg...IOSR Journals
The laboratory rat is an important animal model which has been used extensively in the fields of biological, pharmaceutical, behavioral and biomedical sciences. There are several laboratory procedures which are implemented on this model repetitively. These procedures require proper handling and restraint of the rat. A good amount of general information is available at several places on web. Knowledge about safe and effective rat handling techniques and methods are mandatory to learn before starting experiments on animal models. Avoidance of stress and discomfort of the rat is very important for the overall outcome of an experimental study. Here we address and review someessential techniques to handle difficulties of working with the laboratory rat (RattusNorvegicus) using our first-hand experience from an animal care and safety perspective in moderately available animal facility especially for developing countries.

Determination of the Prevalence of Bluetongue Disease in Goats in Siirt Provi...AI Publications
Bluetongue disease is a disease caused by the bluetongue virus in the Orbivirus genus of the Reoviridae family. The disease can be transmitted by ticks, sperm and vertically but is mainly spread by the Culicoides type flies. While the disease is naturally observed in cattle and sheep, it is more rarely observed in goats. This study was carried out to determine the presence of bluetongue infection in goats raised in Siirt province serologically and to obtain information about its prevalence in the region. The material of the study consisted of a total of 372 goats over one year of age raised in Siirt province. For laboratory analyses, 5 ml blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of goats to tubes without anticoagulant. The samples were centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes, and the sera were transferred to Eppendorf tubes and stored at -20 °C until analysis. The serum samples were analyzed by the ELISA (Thermo Scientific Multiskan Go) method using the commercial test kit (Bluetongue Virus VP7 Ab Test Kit, IDEXX). The results were evaluated as positive and negative. Of the 372 goats constituting the material of the study, 252 (67.74%) were seropositive and 120 (32.26%) were seronegative. As a result, in addition to measures for quarantine and vector control in the fight against the disease, it was concluded that vaccines specific to virus serotypes should be used and comprehensive and planned studies should be carried out in relation to the disease in the region and the country.

Problem solving is a method that involves identifying a challenge and using analysis and hypothesis testing to arrive at a solution. It requires that a problem be clearly defined and relevant to students' lives. The key steps are selecting a problem, gathering relevant data, organizing that data, developing hypotheses for solutions, and reaching a conclusion. As a teacher's role is to provide guidance but allow discovery, letting students work through the problem solving process themselves. This method can be effectively applied to teach commerce topics by giving students real-world problems related to concepts like banking, marketing, and e-commerce to analyze and solve.

The document discusses different definitions of the rule of law and their relationship to economic success. It notes that while growth is important, sustainable growth is needed for true economic success. There are "thin" and "thick" definitions of the rule of law. Thin definitions focus on property rights and justice administration, while thick definitions also include fundamental rights, democracy, and civil liberties. The document argues that adhering only to thin definitions could perpetuate inequality, while thick definitions promoting rights and liberties are more likely to lead to sustainable growth and economic success over the long run.

The document discusses the importance of the rule of law for sustained development. It argues that development requires participation from all disciplines, with law playing a pivotal role in facilitating orderly change. The rule of law promotes predictable, fair legal systems and limits arbitrary governance. Studies have found that nations with stronger rule of law tend to be wealthier. For countries to develop, the public must understand their reliance on the rule of law rather than nepotism or corruption. A sound legal framework is also important for attracting long-term investment by providing predictability and competition in the market. However, establishing rule of law depends on each country's unique circumstances.

This document discusses rabies, a viral disease transmitted through animal bites that causes brain inflammation. It defines rabies and describes its transmission, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The main symptoms are bizarre behavior, fear of water and death within days of symptom onset. Post-exposure prophylaxis includes wound cleaning and rabies vaccine or immunoglobulin. Prevention involves pre-exposure vaccination and controlling animal vectors.
Henry Too presented on pig production in Asia and experiences with Circovac®. Pig farming ranges from small backyard operations to commercial farms. Circovac® is registered for use in several Asian countries and has been shown in trials to significantly reduce mortality and PCVD-specific mortality, improve growth rates, reduce time to slaughter, and decrease viral shedding compared to non-vaccinated pigs. The results demonstrate Circovac® is effective at controlling PCV2 infections across the whole herd through sow or piglet vaccination.
Rabies is a viral disease spread to humans through contact with infected saliva, most commonly from dog bites. Once symptoms develop, rabies is almost always fatal. Post-exposure prophylaxis, consisting of wound cleansing, rabies immunoglobulin, and vaccination, must be administered promptly after exposure to prevent onset of the disease. For infected patients, treatment focuses on comfort care since invasive procedures are avoided once diagnosis is confirmed.
antimicrobial use and resistance insights from a veterinary perspectiveJeroen Dewulf
Antimicrobial use and resistance from a veterinary perspective
1) Antimicrobial resistance develops naturally in bacteria but is selected for with antimicrobial use. Surveillance data from several EU countries links increasing antimicrobial resistance in animal pathogens to higher antimicrobial use.
2) Antimicrobials are widely used in livestock production for treatment, prevention and growth promotion. Usage surveys in Belgium found high levels of antimicrobial use in broiler chicken, pig and dairy cattle production.
3) There is transmission of antimicrobial resistance between animals, humans and the environment. Resistance genes are common in commensal bacteria from food animals, wildlife and the environment.
Emerging diseases of sheep and goat with reference to Blue Tongueshaikh Salahuddinshkh
This document discusses blue tongue, an emerging viral disease affecting sheep and goats. It is transmitted by biting midges and causes fever, facial swelling, and lesions in the mouth. There are 24 serotypes identified in India. Diagnosis involves virus isolation, serology, antigen detection and PCR. Treatment is supportive and control relies on vector control, quarantine, vaccination and notification of authorities. Vaccines developed in India target the most common 5 serotypes. Blue tongue is difficult to eradicate due to the many serotypes and abundant vector populations in India.
Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain. It is transmitted to humans through bites or scratches from infected animals like dogs. Once symptoms develop, rabies is nearly always fatal. Treatment involves thorough wound cleaning, rabies immunoglobulin, and rabies vaccines. Prevention focuses on vaccinating animals and using post-exposure prophylaxis for people exposed through bites. There is no cure for rabies once symptoms appear.
James T. Haigwood III is applying for a curatorial position and has over 20 years of experience working with animals at zoos. He has held several roles of increasing responsibility at the Los Angeles Zoo, including senior animal keeper, full-time keeper, and hospital/quarantine keeper. In these roles, he cared for animals, communicated with staff, ensured safety policies were followed, and evaluated employees. He also has extensive experience and training in animal observation techniques, handling and capturing exotic species, and the husbandry of various taxa. He has received several honors for his work in animal management, fundraising, and leadership positions in zoo associations.
Emergence of antibiotic resistance in captive wildlifeBhoj Raj Singh
In this presentation antimicrobial drug resistance (AMR) in captive wildlife has been compared with AMR in bacteria isolated from veterinary clinical cases. In captive wildlife bacteria resistant to carbapenems, all generations of cephalosporins, producing ESBL, MBL, and NDM were prevalent. In this study 36.7% bacterial isolates from captive wildlife were ESBL producers and about 45% were MDR type. In recent past not much increase in AMR in bacteria of captive wildlife was observed. Carvacrol was found to be the most effective herbal antimicrobial. About 67.5% bacteria from birds kept in zoo and >71% those from zoo carnivores had MDR. This was much more than in strains of wild herbivore origin (<30%). Herbal drugs resistance was more common in bacteria from herbivore captive wildlife in contrast to AMR for conventional antimicrobials in bacteria from carnivores. Bacteria from carnivores had higher levels of multidrug resistance than those from omnivores or herbivores. No such difference was evident in bacterial isolates from domesticated or pet herbivores and carnivores. Omnivore animals (pigs) and human isolates had almost similar levels of AMR but much higher than herbivores. Position in food chain and Food of the host play an important role in occurrence of AMR bacteria. The study revealed that members of Enterobacteriaceae are the major players in the propagation of AMR. And for maintenance or propagation of AMR Enterobacteriaceae members, wild carnivores are the major abode. The study indicated that AMR was common in bacteria of captive wildlife too as in other biotic and abiotic components of the environment. However, the level of AMR was much more aggravated than in domestic animals. It can be concluded that if we need to monitor the AMR in any locality it will be more informative to look for the AMR strains in wildlife and aquatic environment than in livestock. This might be due to the concentration of the AMR strains in wild carnivores having a specific niche in food chain. More long term studies on large number of isolates from wide variety of captive wildlife living in different geographical and climatological conditions are required for better understanding of AMR trends.
This document provides an overview of the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Haematology and Transfusion Medicine. It lists the editors, contributors, and contents of the manual. The manual covers topics in haematology, haemostasis, and transfusion medicine. It provides practical guidance for diagnostic techniques and the diagnosis and management of various haematological diseases. The manual brings together expertise from specialists around the world.
The document provides guidelines for laboratory animal care and handling as per CPCSEA (Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals). It discusses various aspects of animal housing including veterinary care, procurement, quarantine, stabilization, disease surveillance and treatment, record keeping, environment and facilities, husbandry practices, transportation, anesthesia, euthanasia, ethics and regulatory mechanisms. The key roles of CPCSEA and Institutional Animal Ethics Committees are to ensure animal welfare and evaluate justifications for animal experimentation.
The Kibale EcoHealth Project has been conducting research in Kibale National Park, Uganda since 2005 based on the One Health concept linking human, animal, and ecosystem health. Research findings include that keeping cattle closer to park edges increases risk of hemoparasite infection, crossbred cattle are more susceptible to Theileria parasites than pure breeds, and routine veterinary care reduces Trypanosomiasis in cattle. Domestic pigs near the park border may exchange parasites with wild pigs, and dogs contact wildlife putting them at risk of spreading diseases. The project recommends keeping animals free of ticks, not letting dogs run freely, and working with farmers on animal and human health practices.
Rabies is entirely preventable, and vaccines,
medicines, tools, and technologies have long
been available to prevent people from dying of
dog-mediated rabies. Nevertheless, rabies still
kills about 60 000 people a year, of whom over
40% are children under 15, mainly in rural areas
of economically disadvantaged countries in Africa
and Asia. Of all human cases, up to 99% are
acquired from the bite of an infected dog.

WCS's health programs work to save wildlife through scientific research, clinical care, and innovative solutions at the intersection of wildlife, domestic animal, and human health. They identified canine distemper virus as a threat to endangered Amur tigers in Russia, which has a population of only 400-500 individuals. Their molecular scientist helped train Russian colleagues to continue disease research. They also work globally on turtle conservation projects like headstarting Southern River terrapins in Cambodia and assessing turtle species in Chinese markets to advance ex situ conservation efforts.
