Building Modern Data Streaming Apps
In this session, I will show you some best practices I have discovered over the last seven years in building data streaming applications including IoT, CDC, Logs, and more.
In my modern approach, we utilize several Apache frameworks to maximize the best features of all. We often start with Apache NiFi as the orchestrator of streams flowing into Apache Pulsar. From there we build streaming ETL with Spark, enhance events with Pulsar Functions for ML and enrichment. We build continuous queries against our topics with Flink SQL.

Building Modern Data Streaming Apps
In this session, I will show you some best practices I have discovered over the last seven years in building data streaming applications including IoT, CDC, Logs, and more.
In my modern approach, we utilize several Apache frameworks to maximize the best features of all. We often start with Apache NiFi as the orchestrator of streams flowing into Apache Pulsar. From there we build streaming ETL with Spark, enhance events with Pulsar Functions for ML and enrichment. We build continuous queries against our topics with Flink SQL.

The presentation provides a brief overview of the different technologies that can be used to deploy applications on the IBM Cloud (formerly known as IBM Bluemix) - Cloud Foundry applications and services, Docker containers, and Kubernetes clusters. Following, the presentation focuses in on the Hybrid Cloud model, looking at Hybrid Cloud architectures, integration between on-prem, private, and public cloud services, API Economy, and finally, IBM API Connect as one IBM Hybrid Cloud Solution.

Lino Telera gave a presentation on serverless computing. He began with introductions and background. The presentation covered serverless concepts like Function as a Service, demonstrated building a simple microservice using AWS Lambda that interacts with S3, and discussed integrating functions with services like S3 using Boto. It also showed how functions can be called from devices using skills and discussed running serverless on-premise using OpenFaaS or Pivotal Container Service. The presentation concluded with a Q&A and thanks to sponsors.

In my session, I will show you some best practices I have discovered over the last 7 years in building data streaming applications including IoT, CDC, Logs, and more.

Lambda Layers & Runtime API
At AWS re:Invent, we have launched support for blue/green deployments for services hosted using AWS Fargate and Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS).
Blue/green deployments help you minimize downtime during application updates. They allow you to launch a new version of your application alongside the old version and test the new version before you reroute traffic to it. You can also monitor the deployment process and, if there is an issue, quickly roll back.
In this workshop, you will create a new service in AWS Fargate that uses AWS CodeDeploy to manage the deployments, testing, and traffic cutover for you.
