Life styles inventory My self-improvement plan Step 1: The most predominant style in my profile is the humanistic-encouraging (1 o’clock position). The least predominant is the competitive style.  Step 2: The styles I have chosen to work are the competitive –the least predominant- and the oppositional, the second less predominant (positions 9 and 7). My score for the competitive style -9- means that I tend to believe that, being so little competitive, I sometimes find it hard to feel and show myself as an assertive person. I am usually part of a team, because I like sharing, discussing and coming to a consensus or agreement , and the team acts like my supporting net; but, whenever, I am asked to lead the group or to confront with other people, I tend to feel I am not the right person to do it. In the case that I start a project on my own, I do not usually have doubts about my capability to reach my goal. I usually compete with myself, not with others. As for the oppositional style -7-, my low score means that people tend to see me as abrasive or questioning when I do not agree with something or someone: I guess this is how I look because of a lack of practice of this style; as I do not like to be oppositional, whenever I have to express disagreement, I do it in a way that may hurt people. I know I have to learn to be more politically correct when stating my opposing opinion.  Step 3: I learned from my father to share, to discuss, and to come to an agreement if not a consensus…              From my colleagues in A.P.I.C.A.N.A. (the binacional center where I started my teaching career) that team work is always much better and much more rewarding than competing…              From very negative arguments with a teacher in one of the primary schools where I worked, I learned that, sometimes, people you compete with are disloyal and mischievous… Step 4:  Personal positive consequences of developing this style ,[object Object]
Being understood as a person that does not agree, instead of as a disrespectful one

Gaining my colleagues’ respect as a result of the first point already mentioned.Step 5: Some positive differences: I would be able to express my disagreement with a higher assertiveness Some negative differences: I may become too competitive and oppositional, and just became the opposite person that I am right now. Step 6: As the competitive and oppositional styles have the humanistic-encouraging style as its alternative, and being this one the style that I have most developed, I think that the ideal situation would be to reach a balance. I should probably think more of me as an individual that can achieve higher goals by myself and stop considering other people’s feelings and ideas as more important or better than mine. An equilibrium would allow me grow as a professional in a way I have not experienced yet. Step 7: Probably, in order to become a little more competitive and oppositional, I should come to resign feelings and ideas that have been an inherent part of me up to this moment: being less generous as regards my work, my opportunities and my work material; being more individualistic and less “part of the team”; devoting less time and effort in encouraging and fostering other people’s work and investing more time and effort in mine. Step 8: the current barriers that exist to making this change are I –in the first place-, my nature and my tradition. Step 9: I guess that the only way I could overcome these barriers is setting my goals as priorities and put them in perspective, so that I do not change in nature but, as a professional, become a more efficient and pragmatic one. Step 10: By making this change, I will gain my own satisfaction, my colleagues and my students’ respect. I plan to do this by leaving this attitude of listener; instead, I will become a speaker. Fostering my self-confidence in the fact that, every day, I work hard on my goals. Having my goals in mind all the time will help me to work on them every day.
