A desert is defined as a barren landscape that receives less than 25 cm of rainfall per year, making conditions difficult for plant and animal life. Desert climates vary depending on location but they generally have short moist summers and long cold winters. The hottest months are April through June while December through February are the coldest. Most rainfall occurs during the monsoon season from June to September. Water is stored in ponds which are the sole source of water for drinking, washing, and other uses. Housing is typically made of mud bricks or wood with families living together in joint family systems. Traditional professions include woodworking, weaving, embroidery, agriculture, and herding. 2. WHAT IS DESERT?
• A desert is a barren area of landscape where little precipitation occurs
and, consequently, living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life.
The lack of vegetation exposes the unprotected surface of the ground to
the processes of denudation. About one-third of the land surface of the
Earth is arid or semi-arid. This includes much of the polar regions, where
little precipitation occurs, and which are sometimes called polar deserts or
"cold deserts". Deserts can be classified by the amount of precipitation
that falls, by the temperature that prevails, by the causes of
desertification or by their geographical location.

3. CLIMATE IN DESERT
• Deserts receive less than 25 centimeters (10 inches) rainfall per year. Cold
deserts have short, moist, and moderately warm summers. The winters are long
and cold. The average winter temperature is between –2 and 4°C (31–39°F); the
average summer temperature is between 21 and 26°C (70–79°F)
• The month of April, May and June are the hottest ones during the day. The
average maximum and minimum temperatures remain 41°C to 24°C
• While December, January and February are the coldest months with average
maximum and minimum temperatures is 28°C to 9°C
• Rainfall varies from year to year. Most of the rain falls in the monsoon months
between June and September whereas the winter rains are insignificant.

4. WATER AND HOUSING IN DESERT
• The rain plays an important role in the life of all parts of
desert as the water gets in small ponds which are used for
drinking, washing and other uses. These ponds are only
source of water for animals and humans.
• For most of the housing the main construction material
for outer walls is unbaked bricks whereas wood is used in
10% and baked bricks or stones with mud bonding in 8%
housing units. A large number of families still live in one
room housing units formed with straws and thin wood
sticks.

5. COSTUMES AND TRADITION
• The common lifestyle in Thar is based on joint family system.
All three generations: grandparents, parents and children
prefer to live under one roof
• However, the men and women have divided out-door and
domestic responsibilities among themselves according to their
ages and skills.
• Some of the main professions there is: woodwork, wool
weaving, leather work, embroidery, snake charming, agriculture
in some parts, herd grazing etc.
