Meet Suzanne
Here is Suzanne, an LCSC
student. She is in class. She
has just been given 2
assignments.

Here are Suzanne's 2
assignments:
Read a chapter from a book that
is on reserve at the Library.
Prepare a presentation to the
class on the topic of your
choice. Use at least 3 sources
from the Library.

Suzanne is ready to start
working on the assignments for
her class.
She has never used the Library
before. But she knows that her
library card is also her Student
ID card.
So she heads over to the
Information Desk at the Student
Union Building to get an ID.





The first assignment was to read a chapter from a
book that her instructor put on reserve.
Suzanne goes to the Circulation Desk.
When someone from the Library staff comes to help
her, she must give them enough information to locate
the correct book! They will need to know:
 Her instructor's name
 The course
 The name of the book on reserve she wants to
borrow.
Fortunately, Suzanne wrote down the name of the
book she is to read! If she hadn't done that, a copy
of her class syllabus might help identify the material
she needs to check out.



Suzanne finished reading the reserve
book and returned it to the Circulation
Desk.
Now she is ready to start looking for
"stuff" for her class presentation. She
has decided to work on a topic relating
child crime to violence in the media.
She can use the computers in the
Library to locate materials. She could
also have used her home computer. If
she has a hard time finding materials,
she can also get help from the
Reference Librarians.



If Suzanne finds something in the
Catalog that she would like to borrow
but finds that it is checked out, she can
place a hold on it. When it comes back
in, the Library Staff will put it aside for
her and let her know it is available.
Placing holds can be done online
through the catalog. She will need her
barcode number from the back of her
ID. She can ask the Reference
Librarians to show her how to place the
hold.

In the catalog, Suzanne found 2
books, a video, and a Government
Document. Now she is finding the
materials on the shelf.
Videos and Government
Documents are on the Library's 1st
Floor. Books she can borrow are
on the 2nd Floor.

Suzanne found several promising items listed
in the catalog.
This one is a Government Document.
Government Documents, Reference Books, and
Periodicals do not circulate -- that is, Suzanne
must use them in the Library. She is welcome
to copy or scan pages that will help her
prepare for her presentation, but she cannot
check them out.
Luckily, most Government Documents are also
available online, so Suzanne might be able to
access a digital copy of her document.

Back at the Circulation Desk,
Suzanne presents her Student
ID. The Library Staff scans her
barcode, and scans the barcode on
each item, and stamps the "Date
Due" on each item.
As a final step, they deactivate the
Security device inside each item, so
that Suzanne can leave the building
without setting off the Security
alarm!

The books that Suzanne borrowed
from the LCSC Library must be
returned in 28 days (4 weeks).
The video must be returned in 14
days (2 weeks).
If she needs to use them longer, she
can renew each item once.
EXCEPTIONS:
She may not renew reserve items.
 She may not renew an item on which
another patron has placed a hold.

Laptops check out for either 1 day or one week.
Laptops are available on a first-come, first-serve
basis. Patrons may not renew or place holds on
laptops.
If the laptop is not returned on time, fines begin to
accumulate. After 24 hours, the laptop will be
considered stolen, and security will be called.
Students who borrow the laptops are responsible
for replacing them, if lost or damaged.



What if I'm late returning stuff to the
Library?
FIRST: Return the book or video or laptop to
the Library right away. Even if you don't
have the money right now to pay a fine,
return the item so that it doesn't keep
accumulating fines.
FINES:
Books

25₵ / day

Videos

$1 / day

Reserve items

$1 / hour

Laptops

$2.50 / hour (1 day checkout)
$20 / day (7 day checkout)

What happens if I lose something
from the Library?
You will be charged a
replacement fee, which varies by
item type.
Replacement costs on laptops are
a minimum of $1,400.

You must present a Student ID at the Circulation Desk to
borrow Library materials.
You may renew most items 1 time, except for laptops
and reserve items.
After the due date (or due hour), fines begin to
accumulate.
Eventually, if the item is not returned, we assume that it
has been lost and charge a replacement fee.
Loan periods vary by item type:
Books

4 weeks

Media (Videos / CDs)

2 weeks

Laptops

24 hours OR 7 days
