Social work is an integral component of the U.S. health care system. The emergence of professional social work in Indian hospitals is a attributed to Bhore committee who recommended training and placement of hospital social workers. Social work in healthcare is performed in a medical context that is, the medical social worker needs to collaborate with the medical professionals who usually treat patients. Social work in healthcare is also regulated by healthcare legislation and not solely by social laws. Social work in healthcare in India accomplished by medical social workers trained in crisis treatment, psychosocial treatment, counselling, law, how to handle traumas and how to provide social assistance, emotional support, and instrumental support. Social worker in present settings across the health care continuum, providing services to individuals and families throughout the lifespan, and addressing the full range of bio psychosocial issues that impact well being. For the Research Assignment, I have chosen to focus on an area of Healthcare that rarely gets the
attention it deserves.
Mental health.
I
chose this topic because I am personally effected by it and so are many millions of Americans. Mental illness is also one of the leading causes of
death in our nation and one life is lost as a result of suicide, abuse or incarceration every 17mins in the United States. Mental illness has been my
area of focus throughout this program and the advocacy and participatory philosophy will be useful for the final project because it suggests that
“
that research inquiry needs to be intertwined with politics and a political agenda” (Creswell, p.9). I do believe that mental health has a specific
agenda for a study and that there has been constant aim for reform in healthcare and mental health. This social issue is definitely pertinent right
now and topics that address it such as “empowerment, inequality, oppression, domination, suppression, and alienation” (Creswell, p.9), and are
really the focus of the study. The goal of this project for me, is to provide a voice to participants and give them the ability address the concerns that
will lead to reform.
According to Kemmis and Wilkinson (1998) this philosophy offers four key features of the advocacy/participatory framework of inquiry:
1. Participatory actions are focused on bringing about change, and at the end of this type of study, researchers create an action agenda for change.
2. It is focused on freeing individuals from societal constraints, which is why the study begins with an important issue currently in society.
3. It aims to create a political debate so that change will occur.
4. Since advocacy/participatory researchers engage participants as active contributors to the research, it is a collaborative experience.
Research Problem Statement
My Vision is to Provide members of the community with the opportunities and education needed to prevent death due to suicide, acts of self-harm
and the traumatic impact of mental illness. By promoting resilience, the enhancement of community resources, conflict resolution and support for
individuals, families and the communities of those who suffer with mental disorders, illness or have a sudden mental health crisis. The target
population includes all individuals within Chatham County, with unmet mental health needs.
These individuals are currently not being served by
traditional methods due to financial, structural, and personal barriers including access and stigma. Untreated mental health
issues of these
individuals put them at risk for exacerbation of physical health problems, suicide attempts, premature moves to long-term care settings, and
psychiatric hospitalization, incarceration, residential alcohol/drug treatment or homelessness. The target population is all individuals within

Introduction
The primary role of a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner is providing psychotherapy and educating patients and families.
One of the problems that has been experienced in psychiatry is stigma, discrimination and prejudice.
This issue has presented certain effects like delay in seeking help, burnout among health care providers and poor services.
One of the theories that is relevant to the specialty is the modelling and role modelling theory.
Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners usually play a key role in promoting health care. Their primary role is providing psychotherapy and educating patients and families. However, patients and health care providers are facing various issues particularly stigma, discrimination and prejudice which has negatively affected the provision of health care services. The modelling and role modelling theory is one of the theories that is relevant and can greatly help to deal with the problem and may be used as a framework to guide evidence-based practice.
2
Modelling and Role Modelling Theory
It was developed by Helen Erickson, Evelyn Tomlin and Mary Anne and was published in 1983.
This theory helps health care providers to care for and nurture every patient based on their needs.
Commonalities in the theory include attachment and loss, basic needs, holism and cognitive stages.
Differences in the theory include self-care, stress, adaptation, model of the world and inherent endowment.
The modelling and role modelling theory was developed by Helen Erickson, Evelyn Tomlin and Mary Anne and was published in 1983. This is a crucial theory in nursing because it helps health care providers to care and nurture patients while upholding the awareness and respect of every patient’s uniqueness (Smith, 2019). Due to that, this theory is considered to support clinical practices that concentrate on the needs of patients. The theory looks at certain elements like attachment and loss, holism, basic needs and cognitive stages. It focuses on certain differences amongst people including stress, self-care, adaptation, model of the world and inherent endowment.
3
Relevance of the Theory
Modelling involves health care providers seeking to know and understand patients’ personal model of their world.
Health care providers learn to appreciate the value of patients’ personal model of the world and its importance.
This theory acknowledges that all human beings have unique perspectives about their world.
Health care providers are able to develop an image and understanding of patients’ perspective and personal model of the world.
The modelling and role modelling theory is relevant to my nurse practitioner specialty since it entails crucial aspects that promote the well-being of patients. During the modelling process, nurses are able to find out and comprehend the personal model of patients and learn how t.
Chapter 14
Mental Health
Chapter Objectives
Outline issues inherent in the provision of mental health care in the correctional setting.
Understand when inmate participation in mental health care and treatment can be required.
Explore the right to privacy with regard to mental health records.
Introduction
Provision of mental health services is a necessary and complex part of any correctional operation.
Attention to planning and implementation of services to meet the mental health needs of population greatly contribute to a smooth running facility; inattention can lead to problems, negative publicity and litigation.
Correctional administrators must know the standards for care of mentally ill offenders.
Process for care of the mentally ill has changed significantly over the past fifty years. With the advent of psychopharmacology and focused therapies most people suffering from mental illness may be managed in outpatient settings.
Introduction
The management of most mentally ill patients as outpatients has resulted in the deinstitutionalization of people needing care.
However, the lack of community resources and existing support systems has led to the inadequate treatment of some mentally ill persons and has resulted in their placement in the criminal justice system.
Current data reflect more mentally ill persons in jails and prisons than in community mental institutions.
About half of the inmate population has been diagnosed with a mental health problem with approximately 16% diagnosed with serious mental illness.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
Most commonly used classification system of mental illness and defects.
A mental disorder is a: “clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern that occurs in an individual and that is associated with present distress or disability.”
Major mental disorders include diagnosis of: schizophrenia, major depression, or bipolar disorder.
Many inmates demonstrate personality dysfunction and meet criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder and other personality disorders, which remain difficult to treat.
Guidelines and Standards
The responsibility for provision of care to those who are denied the ability to choose their own care because of confinement has been defined in the Courts and standards of several organizations published to review.
The current standard of care requires basic and clinically relevant care. Problems arise when care falls below accepted standards and may result in deliberate indifference.
Deliberate indifference can be evidenced by: lack of access, failure to follow through with care, insufficient provision of staff resources, and poor outcomes due to negligent care.
Guidelines and Standards
Several organizations have established minimum guidelines for the treatment of mentally ill in correctional environments:
a. American Correctional Association (ACA)
b. American Medical Association (AMA)
c. American Public He.

Supportive and interpersonal psychotherapy approaches
With the prevalence of mental disorders, researchers and healthcare providers have studied the efficacy of different psychotherapy approaches to determine the most efficient strategies that can be used in assisting patients with particular psychiatric disorders. Supportive psychotherapy along with interpersonal psychotherapy are prevalently used in the treatment of mental disorders. These two approaches have various similarities as well as differences. Herein, I will discuss the two psychotherapy approaches, their similarities, differences, and situations in which each of the approaches would be effective in the treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders.
Similarities and Differences of Supportive and Interpersonal Psychotherapy Approaches
Supportive psychotherapy approach refers to a form of psychotherapeutic strategy that combines psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral as well as interpersonal conceptual approaches of psychotherapy and techniques (Wheeler, 2014). With this psychotherapy approach, the major aim of the therapist is to improve the adaptive along with healthy patterns of the patient with the major objective being to reduce the prevailing intrapsychic conflicts contributing to the patient’s condition. On the other hand, the interpersonal approach refers to a brief, interpersonal focused strategy, which concentrates on identifying and resolving the prevailing interpersonal problems to alleviate the presenting symptoms (Wheeler, 2014). The therapist is essentially concerned with the interpersonal context and the associated factors that may predispose, propagate or precipitate the symptom of psychiatric disorders.
Both approaches are mainly aimed at bringing a therapeutic impact to patients presenting with the symptoms of psychiatric conditions. However, the two approaches have differences. Firstly, the interpersonal approach is an emphatically supported treatment model that mainly adheres to a highly structured and time-limited approach that often takes between 12 to 16 weeks (Cuijpers et al., 2016). Conversely, the supportive approach is not structured and utilizes a combination or either the psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and/or interpersonal conceptual approach. What is more, as highlighted in the above paragraph, the main aim of the supportive approach is to enhance the patient’s healthy as well as adaptive patterns in order lessen the prevailing intrapsychic conflicts contributing to the development of mental disorders. Conversely, the main aim of using the interpersonal approach is to ide.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. INTRODUCTION:
Holistic patient care is the role of liaison psychiatry
that means meeting client, mental health care need
in general health setting.
Edward Billings first coined the term "liaison
psychiatry”.
Liaison psychiatry came from the old tradition, which
advocates ceaseless dynamic interaction of mind and
body.
02/24/19
3. Cont..
George L. Engel coined the term
"Biopsychosocial Model" which overcame
divisions created by Cartesian Dualism and
was to have wider repercussions on psychiatric
practice.
It includes the psycho dynamic evaluation of
the of the patient’s personality to their reaction
of illness.
02/24/19
4. DEFINITION:
Liaison psychiatry is the sub-specialty which provides psychiatric treatment to patients
attending general hospitals, whether they attend out-patient clinics, accident &
emergency departments or are admitted to in-patient wards. Therefore it deals with
the interface between physical and psychological health.
Liaison nurse: a nurse specialist with a master's degree who provides psychiatric
nursing services in nonpsychiatric settings. But generally speaking every nurse who
addresses the psychosocial issues of the patient care is a liaison nurse because she /he
play the role of interface between the physical and psychological health.

6. NEED FOR LIASON PSYCHIATRIC
NURSING:
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates India has only 0.3 psychiatrists, 0.07
psychologists and 0.12 nurses available per 1,00,000 people.
The National Mental Health Survey, 2016, estimated that over 85% of people with
common mental disorders such as depression or anxiety disorder and 73.6% of people
with severe mental disorders such as psychosis or bipolar disorder do not receive any
mental healthcare and treatment.
Prevalence of mental illness ranges from 41.3% to 46.5%
10% of Indian population affected with the depression, anxiety disorder and
substance abuse
02/24/19
7. India records the highest rate of suicide in the world, with victims ranging from
15 -44 years, as per the WHO.
According to the NCRB (2015), a student commits suicide every hour in India.
India spends less than 1% of its total health budget on mental health
Mental illness accounts for One fourth of the primary care setting in India
80% of the population with diagnosed mental illness are not on treatment
despite the presence of symptom for more than one year

16. Areas to be vigilant for liaison
psychiatric care
The focus of specific need are listed below:
Patient with medical conditions those results in psychiatric or behavioral symptoms such
as delirium.
Individuals who have self –harmed and are being seen in the emergency department.
Patient with mental illness got admitted for medical illness.
Patient with medically unexplained physical symptoms, where there is no organic causes
of illness
Patient experiencing distress out of their medical illness
Medical /surgical Patients having psychiatric symptoms , e.g. suicidal ideation,
hallucination, delusion, etc 02/24/19
17. VULNERABLE POPULATION IN THE
COMMUNITY
HOMELESS PEOPLE
RURAL PEOPLE
INCARCERATED PEOPLE
02/24/19
18. ROLES OF LIAISON NURSE:
They provide psychiatric Assessment and a treatment to those patients
who may experience distressed in hospital and provides a valuable
interface between the mental and physical health.
Assess the patient level of risk to self and others to make the hospital
environment secured for everyone. For example, suicidal prevention in the
hospital, structuring the environment for client safety and prevention of
accidents when the client is delirious.
They can suggest the patient’s mental capacity to make important
decisions either related to treatment or life style modification and
adaptation based on the growth and development needs of the
individual
02/24/19
19. Identify the triggers to symptoms and behaviors which are the basis of
physical illness, for example gastritis and arthritis aggravates with life
stressors.
They can assist with the consultant for making the diagnosis of the patient
and care, because nurses are predominantly with the patient and will
have more inputs, related to the client psychosocial environment of the
client.
They can formulate the nursing care based on the needs and problems of
the patient in the general health setting e.g., Antenatal counseling,
management of adolescent crisis, problem solving and decision making.
Provide guidance and counseling services for both promotive and
curative mental health services availability, referral and follow up.
02/24/19
20. Provide cognitive behavioral therapy as part of the Liaison team, in
identifying the vulnerable populations at risk for violence and abuse. And in
times advocating them for obtaining legal protection. Especially Domestic
violence, geriatric abuse and negligence, child abuse etc.
Take part in updating the trends in mental health nursing and incorporating
in the day to day practice.
Undergoing continuing nursing education on caring the mental health
needs of the patient at the general health setting.
Incorporating the evidence based practice in to research and training as a
advanced practice nurse.
It is essential to keep up the privileged communication and confidentiality
of the patient information until or unless it is essential for the protection of
the patient.
02/24/19
21. CHALLENGES TO LIAISON NURSING
PRACTICE
There are various challenges to realize the Liaison nursing practice like
Shortage of nursing manpower and training in mental health at general
health setting.
Lack of policy guidelines for autonomy in nursing practice.
Lack of team work and mutual respect to the other health care members
Poor working and service conditions of nurses without any clear cut job
description.
There is no nursing practice act in India to legally protect the nurses and
the ensure the boundary of practice
Individualized Lack of will from the practicing nurses.
02/24/19
22. CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME:
The following are the major problems of health services:
1. Neglect of Rural Population:
2. Emphasis on Culture Method:
3. Inadequate Outlay for Health:
4. Social Inequality:
5. Shortage of Medical Personnel:
6. Medical Research:
7. Expensive Health Service:
02/24/19
23. RESEARCH ABSTRACTS….
02/24/19
Indian journal of psychiatry,2010 S.p parkar and N.S.sawanth Liaison in
Psychiatry refers to the branch of Psychiatry involving assessment and treatment in
the general hospital of referred patients, like in the casualty, or patients of
deliberate self farm. The Indian scene also reveals major reference from medicine,
surgery, surgical super specialty and orthopedics with psychiatric disorders like
anxiety, depression and / or organic brain syndromes seen in about 40 to 50 % of
the medical or surgical patients. Though the Indian published data is limited, most
tertiary hospitals in India carry out liaison work with various departments like
Neurology, Organ transplant, Intensive Care Units and Cosmetic Surgery, so as to
give comprehensive health services to patients. Liaison in Psychiatry has thus
brought the emphasis on the teaching of psycho-social aspects of medicine and
also increased research possibilities.
24. CONCLUSION:
The liaison psychiatric nursing services “liases” with many other services like
social services, community services.
Most of the chronic medical diseases are predisposed by stress and its
impact on the alteration in the psychosocial homeostasis of an individual.
When nurses are going to pay attention to the mental health care needs,
in general health setting ,probably it is the holistic nursing, a mere dream
for every common man.
