Betty asks about experiencing an LH surge and ovulation pain. The Pregnancy Advisor responds that it is possible to have an LH surge without ovulation and recommends continuing to test for a few more days. Mary relies on mittleschmerz (ovulation pain) to know when she ovulates. The Pregnancy Advisor confirms others also use ovulation pain this way. Sharon experiences ovulation pains and asks how long after will the egg be released and how long until it can be fertilized. The Pregnancy Advisor responds the egg can be fertilized within 12-24 hours of release and to continue having sex for the next two days.

Betty asks…
LH surge possible ovulation pain?
ok so yesterday may 19 at 4pm i got my first positive opk and then retested at 8pm another
positive but then at 11:30pm when I tested it was a negative, is this possible? Did I possibly
have a chance for ovulation? I also had right lower dull aches up until the negative came out as
well as feeling very nauseous. Its my first month off BC and Im hoping that i ovulated but things
can be really tricky, looking for some answers out there if any of you have any. Should I test
today at 4pm if I already got a negative? I feel like im becoming a POAS addict….
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
In all honesty, I would say test for a few more days. This cycle, I had a positive at 2pm. At 6pm,
it was still dark, but negative (not quite as dark as the control). The following day, at 2pm, it was
positive again, even stronger than the first positive I got. At 6pm, there was barely any line
there. If I hadn’t tested the following day, I would have missed my actual surge, as my temps
showed I only ovulated three days after the second surge. If I hadn’t tested again, I would have
missed it.
Sometimes your body gears up to O, but doesn’t quite make it. It’ll usually try again in the next
few days. Good luck!

2. Mary asks…
Does anyone else rely on mittleschmerz (ovulation pain) to know
exactly when they ovulate?…?
I use ovulation urine test kits and I have ovulation pain every month, but since the test
detects the LH surge 12-48 hours before, you don’t know exactly when you ovulate. I
have ovulation pain every month and usually see egg white cervical mucus, but not always. So
does anyone else go by ovulation pain to know when they’ve ovulated after they’ve gotten a
positive on their OPK?
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
Yes, I do !

3. Sharon asks…
How long after ovulation pains do you actually release the egg?
I’m having ovulation pains right this minute! My LH surge was confirmed this morning and later
on today by positive ovulation tests. The pains i’m experiencing are definitely ovulation pains
on my right side.
How long after getting these pains does your body actually release the egg?
And anyone know how long it is until the egg could actually be fertilised? (had sex this morning,
planning on doing it again tonight)
And finally, if an egg was fertilised, roughly how long is it until the egg implants into the womb?
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
Unfort there is no way to pinpoint the exact moment the egg is released, but once it is released
you have 12-24 hrs to fertilize it before it dies. Continue to have sex for the next 2 days and
then you have to wait at least 2 weeks to test. That’s the hard part – waiting! It takes 5-10 to
implant itself in your uterus. Goodluck!!

5. wondering how long it stays.. and if we did conceive wouldnt it stop all together??
Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:
Ovulation pains vary from person to person. Some people experience period-like cramping,
some experience twinges and sharp pains, while most women don’t experience anything at all.
The pains have been recorded as happening in one day, at one time, a few hours, and a few
days. If you conceived you could also experience implantation bleeding or pains.
Jenny asks…
ovulation pain question?
I detected my LH surge last sat, so we had sex then and the sunday, two days after i had
achy/pain on the right side of my tummy.
I was wondering is the pain due to the tubes contracting the egg? or the egg being released?
thank you
