9. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him
unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
10. And every one that heareth these sayings of
mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened
unto a foolish man, which built his house
upon the sand:

16. 9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in
themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a
Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners,
unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so
much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast,
saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather
than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

20. The Beatitudes & The Gospel of the Kingdom Matthew 5:1-12
What it is not…
“Blessed are the poor in spirit” (vs 3)
The Pharisee in Lk. 18:10-12
The scribes in Lk 20:46; Mk 2:16-17
The Laodicean church in Rev. 3:17
Economically poor
Weak or cowardly (Cowardly spies “We are not
able to go up against the people” Num. 13:31)
False humility
Self - reliant, confident, centered, or sufficient.
Boast in their birth, family, nationality, education,
physical looks, race, wealth, or their culture.
Phil 3:4-8
21. The Beatitudes & The Gospel of the Kingdom Matthew 5:1-12
What it is …
“Blessed are the poor in spirit” (vs 3)
Isa.66:2 “ but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor
and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My Word”
Isa. 57:15 "For thus says the high and exalted One Who
lives forever, whose name is Holy, I dwell on a high and
holy place, And also with the contrite and lowly (poor,
humble) of spirit”
22. The Beatitudes & The Gospel of the Kingdom Matthew 5:1-12
How to increase this quality of being “poor
in spirit”
By looking at God, His Son and His word.
See ourselves as God sees us. Have a realistic
view of ourselves.
Contemplate standing before Him. We come
empty, hopeless, naked and vile (Eph. 2:12;
Rev 3:17)
Pray
Consistently and actively attend Bible
classes and worship services
23. The Beatitudes & The Gospel of the Kingdom Matthew 5:1-12
This is the first, because it is the key to all the
beatitudes that follow.
There is no entry into the Kingdom of heaven apart
from it.
There is no one in the Kingdom of heaven who is
not poor in spirit
It is the fundamental characteristic of the
Christian and of the citizen of the Kingdom of
heaven and all the other characteristics are in a
sense the result of this one.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit” (vs 3)
24. Blessed are they that mourn: for
they shall be comforted.
πένθος, mourning, sorrow (pen'-thos)
25. Job 5:11 To set up on high those that be
low; that those which mourn may be
exalted to safety.
Isaiah 61: 2 To proclaim the acceptable
year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance
of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
James 4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and
weep: let your laughter be turned to
mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
26. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your
hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your
laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to
heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord,
and he shall lift you up.
27. παρακληθήσονται.
παρακαλέω
But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through
the deceitfulness of sin.
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting
one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
28. 1. Manasseh Experienced Grief Over Sin
12 And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled
himself greatly before the God of his fathers,
13 And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication,
and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that
the LORD he was God.
2. David Experienced Grief Over Sin
Few titles in Scripture – if any – can rival what God called David: “a man after My Own
heart” (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22). Considering the terrible sins David committed, we
might wonder why God would refer to him this way. Part of it had to do with David’s
repentant heart, but the bigger reason is David had a deep love for God and this was
shown through the grief he felt over other’s sins.
Rivers of water run down from my eyes, because men do not keep Your law
Psalm 119:136
29. 3. Ezra Experienced Grief Over Sin
He rose up from before the house of God…and when he came there, he
ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt
of those from the captivity.
Ezra 10:6
5. Nehemiah Experienced Grief Over Sin
30. 7. The Ninevites Experienced Grief Over Sin
So the people of Nineveh believed God, and
proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from
the greatest of them even to the least of them.
And God saw their works,
that they turned from their
evil way; and God repented
of the evil, that he had said
that he would do unto them;
and he did it not.
37. Πραϋς (prah-ooce')
This promise to the meek is but a repetition of
Ps 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the earth;
and shall delight themselves in the
abundance of peace.
38.
39. Num 12:3 Now the man Moses was very meek,
above all the men which were upon the face
of the earth.
40. Mat 11: 29
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me;
for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye
shall find rest unto your souls.
