Lesson 6; The Kingdom & His Kingdom (Matt 4;12-25)

3. Jesus Begins to Preach
12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he
departed into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum,
which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and
Nephthalim:
14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the
prophet, saying,
15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way
of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them
which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
4. Jesus Calls His First Disciples
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two
brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother,
casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make
you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed
him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two
brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his
brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending
their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father,
and followed him.
5. Jesus Heals the Sick
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their
synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom,
and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of
disease among the people.
24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they
brought unto him all sick people that were taken with
divers diseases and torments, and those which were
possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick,
and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 And there followed him great multitudes of people
from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem,
and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

7. 12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
Why did Jesus go to Galilee from Judea when
John was arrested if Herod Antipas was the
tetrach of those regions. Matthew 4:12
departed = ἀναχωρέω an-akh-o-reh'-o
8. “Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he
withdrew ἀναχωρέω (an-akh-o-reh’-o, Matthew 4:12) to
Galilee.” The verb an-akh-o-reh’-o is typically used in
Matthew when there is movement from one place to
another in the face of threatening circumstances.
underlying idea perhaps of taking refuge from
danger or of going into retirement
For example, after following the star to Bethlehem, the
magi left ἀναχωρέω (an-akh-o-reh’-o, 2:12) for their own
country by a different route, having been warned in a
dream not to return to Herod.
9. Jesus’ parents went into Egypt
ἀναχωρέω (an-akh-o-reh’-o, 2:14)
after the angel warned them to
flee, and they went ἀναχωρέω
away to Galilee (an-akh-o-reh’-o,
2:22)
13 And when they were departed,
behold, the angel of the Lord
appeareth to Joseph in a dream,
saying, Arise, and take the young
child and his mother, and flee into
Egypt, and be thou there until I
bring thee word: for Herod will seek
the young child to destroy him.
14 When he arose, he took the young
child and his mother by night, and
departed into Egypt:
15 And was there until the death of
Herod: that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken of the Lord by the
prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I
called my son.
10. Jesus departed ἀναχωρέω from
the synagogue (an-akh-o-reh’-o,
12:15)
14 Then the Pharisees went out,
and held a council against him,
how they might destroy him.
15 But when Jesus knew it, he
withdrew himself from thence:
and great multitudes followed
him, and he healed them all;
16 And charged them that they
should not make him known:
after becoming aware of a threat
against him by the Pharisees.
Later, after hearing that John has
been killed, Jesus departed to a
deserted place ἀναχωρέω (an-
akh-o-reh’-o,14:13) to be alone.
11. Jesus’ parents went into Egypt
ἀναχωρέω (an-akh-o-reh’-o, 2:14)
Thus, this verse is
not simply a way
to mark time, but
it signals that
John’s arrest is a
dangerous
situation for
Jesus, and he
must choose how
to respond.
22. of ignorance respecting divine
things and human duties, and
the accompanying ungodliness
and immorality, together with
their consequent misery in hell
