This document provides an overview of the Let's Move! Cities, Towns & Counties (LMCTC) initiative. The initiative was launched in 2010 by the First Lady to address childhood obesity at the local level. It engages local elected officials and encourages cities and counties to commit to 5 goals focused on nutrition, physical activity, and healthy living. Cities that complete surveys reporting their progress can earn bronze, silver, or gold medals in recognition of their efforts. Signing up is free and provides benefits like technical assistance and national recognition for participating communities.

 Five goals developed to better unify activities of cities, towns, and
counties doing this work.
 Are achievable, measurable and promote sustainable strategies
 Leverage existing nation, state and local efforts
 Local elected officials are asked to commit to the 5 Goals . . . .

7. GOAL I: START EARLY, START SMART
 To provide children with a healthier start, local elected
officials commit to helping early care and education
providers incorporate best practices for nutrition, physical
activity and screen time into their programs.

8.  To empower parents and
caregivers, local elected officials
commit to prominently
displaying MyPlate in all
municipally- or county-owned
or operated venues where food
is served.

9. GOAL III: SMART SERVINGS FOR STUDENTS
 To provide healthy food in schools, local elected officials
commit to increasing participation in the School Breakfast
Program and National School Lunch Program.

service guidelines that are aligned
with the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans in all municipally- or

GOAL IV: MODEL FOOD SERVICE

11. GOAL V: ACTIVE KIDS AT PLAY
 To increase physical activity, local elected officials commit
to mapping local playspaces, completing a needs
assessment, developing an action plan, and implementing a
minimum of three proven policies, programs or initiatives
aimed at increasing access to play.

13. Bronze: At least 51% of municipally- or county-owned or operated venues
that serve food prominently display MyPlate, and the Let’s Move! Cities, Towns
and Counties (LMCTC) site Is registered to be a MyPlate Community Partner.
Silver: At least 75% of municipally- or county-owned or operated venues that
serve food prominently display MyPlate, and the Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and
Counties (LMCTC) site is registered to be a MyPlate Community Partner.
Gold: 100% of municipally- or county-owned or operated venues that serve
food prominently display MyPlate, and the Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and
Counties (LMCTC) site is registered to be a MyPlate Community Partner.
Local elected officials commit to prominently displaying MyPlate in all municipally- or
county-owned or operated venues where food is served.

14. SIGNING UP IS EASY!
 Local elected officials can sign up by clicking on the “Sign Up & Get Started
Orange box on www.HealthyCommunitiesHealthyFuture.org
 Once a local elected official signs up on they will receive their city,- town-,
or county-specific survey via email
 The survey is a link that can be accessed at any time to update information
 The survey answers are used by NLC to award the medals, as well as
develop appropriate technical assistance based on needs

15. MONTHLY REPORTING
 There’s no required monthly reporting for cities.
 The only information they need to submit is your initial medal
status survey (Your first step after signing up).
 You may take as long as needed to submit this survey, and your
answers are what we use to determine if they qualify for any
medals.
 Cities are then asked to update this survey on a quarterly basis if
they have made progress on the five goals, but it is not required at
all.
