Oracle SQL tuning with SQL Plan ManagementBjoern Rost
Regression in SQL plans are a frequent cause for performance related incidents when the cost-based optimizer comes up with a new plan due to changes in data distribution, statistics, or binds. While most organizations have very strict processes for changes to applications or infrastructure, the CBO is most often left alone, accepting that SQL execution performance could change at any time. But with SQL Plan Management it does not take much effort to implement a process that makes changes to SQL plans manageable. It starts with monitoring regression in execution times, capturing baselines, auto pre-evaluating potentially better plans, and documenting information needed to accept the change. We will not only cover how SPM works, but also how you can start using it in your organization today.
You need to investigate some performance issues on an Oracle database, but you have no access to Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), or what is worse, not even to SQL*Plus. Where do you start? What is the first query you ask the DBA to execute for you? What is your second and third? Do you request an AWR report? For which snapshots? This scenario is not uncommon or unheard, it happens often to 3rd party consultants, or even to internal DBAs and Developers when the administration of the database has been subcontracted and access has been restricted.
Performance is not the only case where you may need to reach a database and struggle with access; doing a database health-check or collecting historical performance for a capacity planning exercise may face the same issues. What you wish you had is access to a restricted SQL*Plus account, even if remote, and a toolset to collect as much information as possible from the database of interest; or to ask a DBA with access to this database to simply run this toolset and give you back all the output so you can find answers to most of your questions.
eDB360 is a free tool that installs nothing on the database, executes through a SQL*Plus connection, and produces a zip file with a comprehensive report that provides a 360-degree view of an Oracle database. This session is about edb360. It covers what is included on its output, how you execute this tool, and how it can be used to gain a fair understanding of an Oracle database. This session is for DBAs, Developers and Consultants.
Benefits:
1. Learn how to get a fair 360-degree view of a database
2. Gather enough database information to start a health-check
3. Learn which performance to collect for a sizing exercise
Apache Hive is an Enterprise Data Warehouse build on top of Hadoop. Hive supports Insert/Update/Delete SQL statements with transactional semantics and read operations that run at Snapshot Isolation. This talk will describe the intended use cases, architecture of the implementation, new features such as SQL Merge statement and recent improvements. The talk will also cover Streaming Ingest API, which allows writing batches of events into a Hive table without using SQL. This API is used by Apache NiFi, Storm and Flume to stream data directly into Hive tables and make it visible to readers in near real time.

Understanding my database through SQL*Plus using the free tool eDB360Carlos Sierra
This session introduces eDB360 - a free tool that is executed from SQL*Plus and generates a set of reports providing a 360-degree view of an Oracle database; all without installing anything on the database.
If using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) is off-limits for you or your team, and you can only access the database thorough a SQL*Plus connection with no direct access to the database server, then this tool is a perfect fit to provide you with a broad overview of the database configuration, performance, top SQL and much more. You only need a SQL*Plus account with read access to the data dictionary, and common Oracle licenses like the Diagnostics or the Tuning Pack.
Typical uses of this eDB360 tool include: databases health-checks, performance assessments, pre or post upgrade verifications, snapshots of the environment for later use, compare between two similar environments, documenting the state of a database when taking ownership of it, etc.
Once you learn how to use eDB360 and get to appreciate its value, you may want to execute this tool on all your databases on a regular basis, so you can keep track of things for long periods of time. This tool is becoming part of a large collection of goodies many DBAs use today.
During this session you will learn the basics about the free eDB360 tool, plus some cool tricks. The target audience is: DBAs, developers and consultants (some managers could also benefit).

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
