• She assumed all Jews were the same….(how is
it you a Jew)
• Jews have no dealings with Samaritans…can
also have a more specific meaning of “share use of
things” (4:9).
• Jesus was a Jew and He dealt with Samaritans.
• Instead of her just saying yes I will or no I won’t
she brings up ethnicity.

5. Application
• Some people we encounter will already have their
minds made up about the churches of CHRIST or
religion in general.
• We cannot let that stop us from trying or continuing to
try!
• Isaiah 65:2 I have spread out My hands all day long
to a rebellious people. Who walk in the way which is
not good, following their own thoughts,
• Acts 17:2, 17:17

• Can you imagine how she perceives Jesus? He is
tired or wearied (John 4:6)
➡Nothing to draw water with.
➡The well is deep…still over a 100ft to this day!
➡Confusion over living water. Lit. Fresh spring water
(Ref. Gen. 26:19; Lev. 14:6, Lit. Living water)
➡In the Gospel of John “living water” is the Holy
Spirit dwelling in a child of God (Ref. John 7:38-39)

• She seems to put a lot of stock in her genealogy!
• The Samaritan woman’s identification of Jacob as her ancestor
shows the Samaritans believed themselves to be the rightful
descendants of Jacob and true Israelites. (Ref.
Romans 2:28-29)
• In fact they only accepted the Pentateuch and not the Psalms
and Prophets (Luke 24:44)
• Genesis 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the
one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of
the earth will be blessed.”

• Now that her sins have found her out, does she now break
down and ask what must she do to be saved? Is there
hope for one stained with sin?
• NOPE, her convictions have not reached that point yet.
She ingeniously shifts the subject from a personal to a
public question. …..Get the heat off me!!!
• She ignores her sin issues and proceeds to see if He
can settle an age old argument.

9. The Samaritans Response
• She is evangelistic!
• John 4:28-30 So the woman left her water jar and went
away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a
man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the
Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to
him.

10. The disciples response
• John 4:27-33
• They marveled that He was talking to a woman. But they did
not say anything?
• Do we see a sharp contrast between Jesus and His disciples
approach to the woman?
• They could have introduced themselves, asked if she was
hungry.
• They try and get Jesus to eat and He is concerned about
spiritual food and getting everyone to eat that! (vs.33)

11. Application
• We sometimes put stock or trust into men,
ancestors, and possessions more than God.
• Jesus saw the woman as a soul in need of
salvation. We too must look at souls and not
gender or ethnicity.
• As a result of Jesus and His willingness to go
through Samaria and talk with the woman many
believed (vs.39-42).
