When it is all said and done pt.2
1. When it is all said and done
Sermon text: 2 Corinthians 5:1-11
Sermon by: Brian Birdow
2. Objective of Lesson
1. To show what so many of us strive for and
covet.
2. To show the conclusion of the matter.
3. Money
• Ecclesiastes 5:10-17
• Ecclesiastes 5:10 He who
loves money will not be
satisfied with money, nor he
who loves wealth with his
income; this also is vanity.
• 1 Timothy 6:10 For the love
of money is a root of all
kinds of evils. It is through
this craving that some have
wandered away from the
faith and pierced themselves
with many pangs.
4. Money
• Luke 12:15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be
on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s
life does not consist in the abundance of his
possessions.
• Matthew 6:19-21 Do not lay up for yourselves
treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy
and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for
yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not
break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there
your heart will be also
5. Money
• Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your
need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
• Hebrews 13:5 Keep your life free from love of
money, and be content with what you have, for he
has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So
we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will
not fear; what can man do to me?”
• 1 Timothy 6:6-7 But godliness with contentment is
great gain, for we brought nothing into the world,
and we cannot take anything out of the world.
6. Application
• We must use our money and possessions not solely
on ourselves but also to aide others.
• Ephesians 4:28 He who steals must steal no longer;
but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands
what is good, so that he will have something to share
with one who has need.
• Luke 3:11 And he would answer and say to them, “The
man who has two tunics is to share with him who
has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.”
7. Self - Indulgence
• Ecclesiastes 2:3-11
• Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 And
whatever my eyes desired I did not
keep from them. I kept my heart
from no pleasure, for my heart
found pleasure in all my toil, and
this was my reward for all my toil.
• Then I considered all that my
hands had done and the toil I had
expended in doing it, and behold,
all was vanity and a striving
after wind, and there was nothing
to be gained under the sun.
8. Application
• Money does not equate to happiness or joy and
those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and
snares.
• 1 Timothy 6:6-9 But godliness with contentment
is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world,
and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if
we have food and clothing, with these we will be
content. But those who desire to be rich fall into
temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and
harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and
destruction.
9. Application
• The hedonistic & self-self-indulgent lifestyle of eat,
drink and be merry that is commonly praised is not of
God!
• Luke 12:19-20 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast
much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease,
eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou
fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then
whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
• 1 John 3:17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and
sees his brother in need and closes his heart against
him, how does the love of God abide in him?
11. Fear God
• Ecclesiastes 12:13 The conclusion, when all has
been heard, is: fear God and keep His
commandments, because this applies to every
person.
• The use of “fear” often indicates awe or reverence.
To fear God is to express loyalty to Him and
faithfulness to His covenant. Those who fear God
exhibit trust in Him and obedience to His
commandments. According to the O.T. those who
fear God obtain God’s protection, wisdom, and
blessing.
12. Fear God
• Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of
knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
• Job 28:28 And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the
Lord, that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is
understanding.’ ”
• Psalm 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of
wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His
commandments; His praise endures forever.
• Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of
wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is
understanding.
14. The great commandments
• Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
and with all your mind.’
• Deuteronomy 6:5-6 You shall love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
“These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be
on your heart.
15. Love God with all your heart
• The meaning of this is, we must love God with all our
faculties or powers. We must love HIM supremely, more
than all other beings and things, and with all the love and
respect possible.
• To love him with all the heart is to fix the affections supremely
on HIM, more strongly than on anything else, and to be
willing to give up all that we hold dear at his command.
• Luke 14:26 If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate (love
less) his own father and mother and wife and children and
brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be
My disciple. (Ref: Job 23:12)
16. Love God with all your soul
• With all thy soul - Or, with all thy "life." This means, to be
willing to give up the life to him, and to devote it all to his
service; to live to him, and to be willing to die at his command,
• Matthew 19:27-30 …turn with me please…
• Acts 20:22-24 And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on
my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me
there, except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in
every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. “But I
do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself,
so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received
from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the
grace of God.
17. Love God with all your mind
• With all your mind - To submit the "intellect" to HIS will. To love
HIS law and gospel more than we do the decisions of our own
minds. To be willing to submit all our faculties to HIS teaching and
guidance, and to devote to him all our intellectual attainments and
all the results of our intellectual efforts.
• Philippians 3:7-8 But what things were gain to me, those I
counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but
loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my
Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count
them but dung, that I may win Christ.
• Acts 26:24…Fetus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are out of
your mind: your great learning is driving you out of your mind!
18. The great commandments
• Matthew 22:38-40 This is the first and great commandment. And
the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and
the Prophets.”
• Leviticus 19:18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any
grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your
neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.
• Nehemiah 5:14-19 …twmp…
