2. Unit 3 Natural Hazards
3.1 Overview
By the end of this unit I will: This bit will
be covered
•Be able to define a natural hazard as we learn
•Know that different types of natural about each
of the
hazard have specific global distributions specific
•Know that the movement of tectonic types of
plates cause earthquakes and hazard.
volcanoes
•Know that climatic conditions lead to
tropical storms and severe drought Today
3. Copy this
diagram into
your books,
with the
labels.
Structure of the Earth
Watch the video and add as many labels as you can to your picture – NOTE – the video
shows the mantle as two separate layers.
4. The surface of the earth is broken up into tectonic
plates that move, causing earthquakes, volcanoes and
building mountains.
What drives tectonic
movement?
7. There are three types of plate boundaries. A boundary is
where two plates meet.
As I show you the following clips, I would like you to work out which natural hazard each
type of plate movement can cause. Write a table in your book like below
Type of plate boundary Type of hazard caused
DESTRUCTIVE
CONSTRUCTIVE
CONSERVATIVE
8. TASK
Cut out and sort the cards into groups that belong together.
As plates slide alongside
each other they
Constructive occasionally stick and
pressure builds up until
there is an earthquake.
As plates move towards
each other one slides
Destructive under the other causing
volcanoes.
Plates move away from
Conservative each other and new crust
is formed.
You have until the timer finishes to get all of the cards cut out and sorted!
15. WHAT HAPPENED HERE?
Decide if the devastation has been
A
caused by a volcano or an
earthquake, and which type of plate
boundary might be responsible.

16. Tell me two
facts you
have learnt
from the
lesson
