Lesson Planning
WARMER
• As described in the first unit of the course, the warmer will always
be the first thing you do in your lesson.
• It will be fun, concise, and will get your students thinking and
speaking in English.
• This will take up about 5, no longer than 10 minutes of your
lesson.
PRE (Engage)
• The pre section of the class is the first chunk of the class where
you will introduce the material and all of the necessary
information that your students will need to be able to complete
the task of your class
• This section could include things like:
• Initial discussion questions
• Introduction of essential vocab
• Review or presentation of grammar topic
• Review worksheet
• Anything to get ready for the main event
While (Study)
• This section will follow the pre section and it is where your
students will begin to practice the material presented in the first
section of the class.
• In this section you might include things like
• Videos /articles/songs/audios
• Worksheets/ practice
• Guided/ controlled games
• Here you want to reach the goal of the class so they have a good
understanding
Post (activate)
• This section of the lesson is VERY important. This is where the majority
of student production will happen. Here they will relect on the goal, and
put it to use. This is the step after they have conceptualized the task
and now they put it to practice so they can use it in real life. You never
want to skip this section. If your class is going a little bit slower than you
thought it would, cut out some activities from other sections so they are
able to produce. Student production is everything!
• In this section you might include thing such as:
• Role play
• Debates
• Product of what was learned
• Production activity/ game
Closer
• A closer is the last little activity of the class to indicate that it is
over. It’s usually about 5 minutes, but if you are running out of
time it could be something very quick just to say a final goodbye.
You want this to be enjoyable and you don’t want to make
corrections so the students leave on a high note and encouraged
to show up next week
• The closer could be things like
• A short discussion question that takes your lesson further
• The simple question of “What did you learn today?”
• A very quick game or activity that is fun
Go to the following slide to see the
sections broken down visually
Section Purpose Example activities
Warm up Loosen up the students, reduce
inhibitions and gain confidence.
Short group discussion about a lightweight current
event.
ENGANGE
Materials-
Presentation
Explain the lesson theme and give
well described examples of what is
to be learned.
Introduce “Indirect” or “Reported” speech. Explain
that this type of speech is most commonly used in
Newspapers, TV, and Radio news. Its purpose is to
convey information from the past into the present.
“He said that…”, “The Government passed new
legislation for…”
Explanation and
Instruction
-Presentation
Explain and present the material to
be used during the lesson (could be
new or a continuation from a
previous class)
Get some interesting current events covering a few
different areas: Politics, The Arts, Current Affairs,
Sports, Gossip.
STUDY
Practice Enables students under your direct
supervision to try out what has been
learned in a safe and controlled
environment.
Select one of the articles and get the students to
read through it. Ask them what happened, how
they could express what they have read as though it
was happening in the present.
ACTIVATE
Produce Enables the students to practice
what they have learned. Pair work is
good for “Use” practice.
Split the class into pairs. Get them each to write a
short news report of something they have
experienced. Once they have experienced. Once
they are finished, each pair will perform as a TV
news team and read the news report to the rest of
the class. BOTH must participate.
