This lesson plan is for an advanced English class for university students. The plan includes 3 objectives to be covered in the 1 hour and 30 minute class. The first objective focuses on discussing cities and students' hometowns. The second objective focuses on a grammar point about gerunds and infinitives using a song activity. A. DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS
Level: advanced
Population:
University students (boys and girls) enrolled in 9th semester.
Schedule:
This class will take place on Mondays from 3 to 6 p.m. This is a group of young
students who need to learn English as part of their curriculum and foreign
language program.
B. OBJECTIVES
Students will recognize and create interest in the topic of “Cities”
Students will identify the use of gerunds and infinitives and order of
adjectives.
Students will learn how to connect contrasting ideas.
C. CONTENTS
Objective 1 (estimated time: 20 minutes)
Context: students’ hometown
Activities/class organization 1:
Topic: talking about cities
Introduction:Students will be contextualized through questions and some
pictures about famous cities.
Questions:
1. What’s your city like? (describe your hometown)
2. What places can be found in your town?
3. What makes your city attractive/interesting?
4. Which city would you like to visit? Why?
5. Try to define the following words
Architecture - Cuisine
Customs - Festivals
Historical sites
6. What is a place that would make a great vacation destination?
7. What is a place where you would like to live for a few years?
8. What is a place that you would never want to visit? Why?

Activities/class organization 2:
Topic: discuss some common problems in your city
Students will be given some strips of paper which contain Pasto’s common
problems. They will have to analyze their possible causes, provide some
examples and try to give some solutions.

Objective 2(estimated time: 35 minutes)
Context: Students’ classroom
Activities/class organization:
Grammar focus: gerunds and infinitives–adjectives order.
At the beginning, students will be given a small piece of paper which contains
some specific words. They will have to use them in order to compose a song. At
the end of the exercise, they will have to sing it and explain how and why they
organized the given wordsin that way. If there is any doubt about the use of those
words, the teacher will make a short presentation (explanation) in order to clear
their understanding.
Song specifications:
The song will have to be at least 15 lines long.
Students will work in groups of three people and the song has to be
coherent and logic.
The topic of the song needs to be related to a city (any place in a city).
Students will have to use all the following words:

- Enjoy - Town/exciting/Japanese/ancient

Studentswill develop ashort workshopfocused on the previous grammar point.
After reporting its results, they will have to create a mini role-play using the
workshop’s words in bold.
Role’s play topics:

Oh my God! I’ve been stolen! Catch the thief!
Surviving asColombian immigrants in Germany!
What a polluted and noisy place! Which city is it?

D. FEEDBACK (10 minutes)
The teacher will make a short review of the vocabulary and grammatical structures
studied in class. At this point, students will also ask the teacher about their
possible doubts.
