   A. DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS

Level: upper - intermediate
Population:
High school students (boys and girls) enrolled in 10th grade.
Schedule:
This class will take place on Mondays (3 to 6 p.m). This is a group of young
students who need to learn English as part of their curriculum and foreign
language program.


   B. OBJECTIVES

      Students will recognize and create interest in the topic of “Cities”
      Students will identify the use and difference between gerunds and
      infinitives
      Students will learn how to connect contrasting ideas.


   C. CONTENTS

Objective 1 (estimated time: 30 minutes)
Context: students’ hometown
Activities/class organization:

Introduction: talking about cities (Students will be contextualized through
questions, a video about famous cities and a short brainstorming)
Questions:
    1. What’s your city like? (describe your hometown)
    2. What places can be found in your town?
    3. What makes your city attractive/interesting?
    4. Which city would you like to visit? Why?
    5. Try to define the following words
          Architecture
          Cuisine
          Customs
          Festivals
Historical sites
          Nightlife
          Scenery
          Shopping

Group work: in small groups students will be asked to discuss the following
questions in order to reach an agreement. At the end of the discussion, they will
have to report the results to the class.
   1. What is a place that would make a great vacation destination?
   2. What is a place where you would like to live for a few years?
   3. What is a place that you would never want to visit?
   4. In which city would you have the best chance of succeeding at a career?
   5. Which city is better for a single person? For raising a family?
   6. Which city has the best recreational activities?
Aids: Video - slides
Language:
       All and any
       New vocabulary about “cities”
       Simple English vocabulary (use of Spanish if necessary.
Possible problems:
       Students’ lack of participation
       Students feel ashamed of talking in public


Objective 2 (estimated time: 25 minutes)
Context: Students’ classroom
Activities/class organization:

Grammar focus: gerunds and infinitives

At the beginning, students will be given a short reading (a cloze exercise) which
contains examples of the grammar point which is going to be taught in class. They
will have to pay attention to the teachers’ explanation because at the end, they will
have to check the previous exercise and correct it. (group work)
Aids: board – worksheet (cloze exercise) - slides
Language:
       General and predictable
       Simple English vocabulary (use of Spanish if necessary).
Possible problems:
       It is possible that some students feel nervous about being asked by the
       teacher.
       Students lack of participation
       Students lack of understanding with regard to the grammar point
Objective 3 (Estimated time: 25 minutes)
Context: student’s classroom
Activities/class organization:

workshop which includes creating a short role-play.

   D. FEEDBACK (10 minutes)

The teacher will make a short review of the vocabulary and grammatical structures
studied in class. At this point, students will also ask the teacher about their
possible doubts.
