Grade Level: Grade 8
Objective: Determine the number of neutrons in a particular atom
Learning across curriculum:
1) Mathematics - Understanding atomic structure involves numerical calculations and
relationships, connecting the determination of neutrons to mathematical concepts
such as addition and subtraction.
2) History - Exploring the discovery of atomic structure throughout history and how it
has evolved to our current understanding can provide context for determining the
number of neutrons in an atom.
3) Language Arts - Analyzing scientific texts and writing explanations about atomic
structure can enhance students' understanding of neutron determination.
ELICIT:
Teaching Strategy: Brainstorming
Instructional Materials None
Anecdote 1 - Share a Filipino folklore about the creation of the universe and how
ancient beliefs relate to atomic structure.
ENGAGE:
Teaching Strategy: Role-Playing
Instructional Materials: Atom model kits
1) Idea - Have students role-play as protons, neutrons, and electrons to understand
their interactions within an atom.
2) Idea - Conduct a mystery box activity where students feel different objects and
guess the number of neutrons based on their mass and composition.
EXPLORE:

Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning
Materials: Styrofoam balls, toothpicks, markers
Significance - Students will physically construct atom models to visualize the
arrangement of protons, neutrons, and electrons.

Instructions:
1) Assign each group an element and have them build the atom model with the
correct number of neutrons.
2) Groups present their models and explain how they determined the number of
neutrons.
3) Rubric - Accuracy of model (5 pts), Explanation clarity (5 pts)
Assessment Questions:
1) How did you determine the number of neutrons in your atom model?
2) What role do neutrons play in the stability of an atom?
3) Can isotopes of the same element have different numbers of neutrons?
EXPLAIN: provide a mini-lecture on the relationship between atomic number, mass
number, and the calculation of neutrons in an atom. Encourage student questions and
discussions throughout the explanation.
ELABORATE:
Teaching Strategy: Project-Based Learning
Task 1 - Students research and present on the discovery of neutrons and their
significance in atomic structure.
