Title of the unit plan: Playing with molecules
Short description of the lesson plan: We will study the molecular geometry of the covalent
molecules using the virtual reality. The students will build ten molecules, 8 inorganic and 2 organic
ones, that they will classify according with its geometry, and make a short video explaining the
difference between the molecules studied.
Age group and subject: 17 years old, Chemistry 2º Bachillerato
Timing: 3‐4 sessions of one hour.
Aims of the lesson plan:
Represent the molecular geometry of the different covalent substances using the Valence
Shell Pair Electron Repulsion Theory and Valence Bonds Theory.
Develop basic skills in the use of information sources to acquire critically new knowledge.
Acquire basic training in the use of information and communication technology.
To be able to summarize the information obtained from the internet and relate it with the
results obtained from the virtual reality simulation.
Competences:
Linguistic communication.
Mathematic competence, science and technology basic competences.
Digital competence.
Steps of the lesson:
We will work in groups of four students. The steps will be the following:
1.‐ Search on the internet for three videos, in Spanish or English, about molecular geometry, which
video duration will be lower than 10 minutes.
2.‐ Summarize and make an scheme of the content present in the three videos.
3.‐ Search for the molecules present in these videos in the app “Molecules VR”. In case that you do
not find it, you must build at least four of them and verify its geometry in that app.
4.‐ Based on the videos and using the app Molecules VR you have to study the geometry of 8 inorganic
molecules and two organic ones. It should be present at least five different types of geometry. The
molecules should be different from those that initially contained the app.
5.‐ Classify the compounds attending to its geometry and give a reasonable explanation for that.
6.‐ Make a video that contains the classification of the studied molecules, which includes images
obtained using that app. You can also use images obtained through the app “Molecular constructor”.

Assesment:
We will use the evaluation criteria 2 and 4 from the Chemistry curriculum. We will record the work
group for every session, and in the final session, we will evaluate the video using a rubric by
heteroevaluation and coevaluation. We will use kahoot to deliver a simple quiz about the geometry
of the molecules that they have studied through the different sessions.
Materials and Apps needed:
We will need at least one mobile phone and a tablet for each group. Each group will have a virtual
reality glasses.
Apps needed: Molecules VR, Molecular constructor, Vidtrim (Android) or iMovie (iOS), web browser
and the image editor of the students devices.
Tutorials for the Apps:
We will make specific tutorials in order to simplify the task of using the different apps. We suggest the
use of the following ones:
