Duration-45 minutes (1 class period)



Georgia Performance Standards: MKN1h

       Identify coins by name and value (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.)

Materials:

       Teacher’s edition book
       Pretend/real money
       Book-“Benny’s Pennies” b y Pat Brisson
       Promethean Board
       Activ Inspire computer program
       Hard copy graphic organizer on pennies-one per student
       Access to Internet

Goals: Students will learn the details about a penny for the first time. Students will also be
able to count out certain amounts of pennies.

Objectives:

       Cognitive- Students will learn certain information about pennies, and they will be
able to count out amounts of pennies as directed.

       Psychomotor- Auditory, visual

Procedures:

   1. First, the will open the lesson by reading “Benny’s Pennies” by Pat Brisson.
2. After this, the teacher is going to recap the previous day’s material about earning and
      saving money.
   3. At this point, the teacher should give the details about a penny; the penny
      information should include the color, what is on the face of the penny, what is on the
      back of the penny, and review the value of the penny.
   4. Students will then, at their seats, fill out an individual organizer on pennies.
   5. After all the students have completed their graphic organizer, the teacher should
      hand out individual bags of money.
   6. Students should be given direction to separate the pennies from the rest of the coins.
   7. After that is completed, teacher should give students a certain amount of pennies to
      count out. Students should practice this at least four times.
   8. Students should be directed back to carpet for the closure of the lesson. Teacher
      should recap information on pennies by asking questions to students.

Evaluation:

              Oral post assessment
              Monitoring of student sorting activity
