LESSONS
UNIT: Europe LESSON: 3 0f 4
AIMS: To identify countries in the different stages of becoming full EU members and
their capital cities.
OBJECTIVES (By the end of the lesson (s))
• Pupils will know: Names of some EU members and their capital cities.
• Pupils will understand: That not all countries are full members.
• Pupils can do: Pupils can recognise a map of the EU and follow instructions given on
worksheet to colour code map based on membership status.
RESOURCES: Atlas (purple) Large Laminated Map of the EU. ‘Europe – The Political
Stuff’ worksheet and ‘Capital Cities Table’ to fill in. “The Less Well Known/Those
Wanting In”, RED, YELLOW & GREEN pencils. Glue.
LESSON STRUCTURE:
• Introduce the concept that not all “European” countries have full membership.
• Students to use Atlas and Laminated map to follow tasks 1,2 and 3 on “Political
Stuff” sheet.
• Once task above is completed, students to fill in capital city and direction from
the UK sheet. Can work in pairs to speed up exercise if needed.
• Sheets to be stuck into blue book.
• Students can then go on to complete “The less well known and Those Wanting in”
worksheet.
