A Religious “Me too Society”
1. A Religious “Me too
Society”
Jer 7:8-15
8 Behold, ye trust in lying words,
that cannot profit.
9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery,
and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal,
and walk after other
gods whom ye know not;
10 And come
and stand before me in this house,
which is called by my name, and say,
We are delivered to do all these abominations?
11 Is this house,
which is called by my name,
become a den of robbers in your eyes?
Behold, even I have seen it,
saith the LORD.
12 But go ye now unto my place
which was in Shiloh,
where I set my name at the first,
and see what I did to it
2. for the wickedness of my people Israel.
13 And now,
because ye have done all these works,
saith the LORD,
and I spake unto you,
rising up early and speaking,
but ye heard not;
and I called you,
but ye answered not;
14 Therefore will I do unto this house,
which is called by my name,
wherein ye trust,
and unto the place which I gave to you
and to your fathers,
as I have done to Shiloh.
15 And
I will cast you out of my sight,
as I have cast out all your brethren,
even the whole seed of Ephraim.
Satan himself takes the form of an “angel of light” in
order to cover his own hideousness and deceive others.
Sinners hide conscious wrong by pretentious
righteousness.
3. This is done not knowing or believing these Two things
will be the result:
1. Self-deception.
It is dangerous to mock virtue by impersonation, that is
what the “angel of light” does.
Deceivers end up deceiving themselves.
When a man “believe[s] a lie,” or fains as though he
does, he will ignore the warning of danger while
courting destruction.
The “Wicked are taken in their own net”, and “fall
into a pit” they dug for others” and soon swing from
the “gallows prepared” for those they despised.
2. Self-degradation.
Pretense of goodness blinds sinners to the “exceedingly
sinfulness” of iniquity and the inability to wake their
seared conscience.
Evil looks less heinous to sinners comparing themselves
among themselves all dressed in the same uniform of
exaggerated piety.
4. When license is given to iniquity, sin grows, and new
causes are found to blame instead of confessing sin for
what it is.
When the vocabulary of wickedness that offends God
no longer makes a man blush, his unchecked villainy
becomes an unstoppable tied of excesses.
Christ pronounced those men most hopeless who
donned clerical robes to cover their thievery. (Mat. 23:25-
33).
Matt 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin,
and have omitted the weightier matters of the law,
judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done,
and not to leave the other undone. KJV
Matt 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and
of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and
excess. KJV
Matt 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can
ye escape the damnation of hell? KJV
5. I. The Pretense of Sincerity (Jer. 7:10).
1. In the right place: “this house.”
2. In the right posture: “stand before Me.”
“Ye outwardly appear righteous unto men” (Mat.
23:28).
1Sam 16:7
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his
countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I
have refused him:
for the LORD seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance,
but the LORD looketh on the heart.
2Chr 12:13-14
13 So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem,
and reigned: for Rehoboam was one and forty years old
when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years
in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of
6. all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his
mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess.
14 And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to
seek the LORD.
God does not intend for a man to react to circumstances,
or blend in, but to seek the Lord, in the circumstance.
If the eyes of your understanding are not enlightened, a
burning bush appears to be a forest fire.
The fruit of the Spirit is grown in adversity not the
sanctuary of a perfectly manicured green house.
II. The Subtlety of Religious Delusions (Jer.
7:8).
Jer 7:8
8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
1. False trusts:
“trust in lying words” (Jer. 7:8),
7. “My Truth” is always anti-Christ and “that cannot
profit”.
If truth can be relative so can “the way” and “life”.
smooth words of lying prophets “cannot profit”.
Jer 7:4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying,
The temple of the LORD,
The temple of the LORD,
The temple of the LORD,
are these. KJV
A religious mantra “cannot profit”. (Jer. 7:4)
2. Apathetic Resistance:
Jer 7:10
10 …We are delivered to do all these abominations?
Rom 6:1-2
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that
grace may abound?
2 God forbid.
8. How shall we, that are dead to sin,
live any longer therein?
Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not
under the law, but under grace? God forbid. KJV
Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who
were before of old ordained to this condemnation,
ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into
lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our
Lord Jesus Christ. KJV
Jude 1:3
3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you
of the common salvation, it was needful for me to
write unto you, and exhort you that ye should
earnestly contend for the faith which was once
delivered unto the saints.
III. The Degradation of Spiritual Falsehood
(Jer. 7:8).
Jer 7:12
9. 12 But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh,
where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it
for the wickedness of my people Israel.
The delusion that sin can be continued, contained or
concealed proves a man has been consumed by the
delusions he once thought he could innocently flirt with.
To what depths did sin deceive these in our passage?
1. Blatant immoralities (Jer. 7:9).
Jer 7:9a
9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear
falsely,
2. Revolting Idolatries (Jer. 7:9).
Jer 7:9b
…and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods
whom ye know not;
3. Religious Blindness (Jer. 7:11).
Jer 7:11
10. 11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a
den of robbers in your eyes?
Behold, even I have seen it,
saith the LORD.
Mal 2:11-12 11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an
abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for
Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he
loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.
12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the
master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob,
and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts.
KJV
Mal 3:13-15 13 Your words have been stout against me,
saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much
against thee?
14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is
it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have
walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?
15 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work
wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even
delivered. KJV
11. IV. The Foolishness of God’s Message Ignored
(Jer. 7:13).
Jer 7:13
13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith
the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and
speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye
answered not;
1. God did His part to Restrain and Rectify these
deceived Rebels.
They didn’t shake their fist in God’s face and curse him,
they simply “answered not”. Man, always responds to
Gods message, ignoring it is an answer.
2.“I called you:” they were Allured and Entreated and
Warned. “But they answered [,] NOT”.
V. The Consequence of Sin (Jer. 7:14-15).
1. Zion seemed a secure possession.
They “trusted” in it;
12. relied upon the fact that God had given it in covenant
with their fathers.
Mal 2:2
2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give
glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even
send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea,
I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to
heart.
The blessing had lost its worth in God’s sight, and he
brought it to ruin as Shiloh.
Nothing retains its sacredness or its security when
prostituted to purposes of Falsehood, Selfishness
and Indifference.
2. Judah believed herself safe from banishment.
David was of Judah; God had made special promises to
this royal tribe.
But no Privileges or Promises could shelter her guilt
from righteous judgment.
God’s special Plans, Promises and Blessings never
interfere with His Holiness.
13. Selfish Pretense becomes
Religious Delusion that leads to
Moral Degradation that drowns out
Gods message.
But the consequences cannot be averted.
Conclusion: (Heb 3:15)
Heb 3:15
15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden
not your hearts, as in the provocation.
