Grammar Lesson #2:
Run-ons and Comma
Splices
What are Run-ons?
A run-on sentence is caused when two complete sentences are fused
together without the appropriate punctuation.
Ex: Becky went to the mall and Steve went home.
Ex: Becky went to the mall Steve went home
For most student writers, run-ons are often found within sentences
that have a conjunctive word such as and, but, for, or, nor, or yet.
If you find that many of the run-ons your instructor flags in your work
can be found in sentences that have these words, the solution is
simple!
Solving the Run-on
Problem Part 1
The first part of solving the run-on problem is finding them in your writing. If your
run-ons tend to happen with a conjunctive word, the simple solution is to use the
“Find” feature in your word processing software. Simply find the conjunctive word
you tend to insert into your sentences and make one of the following changes:
Put a comma before the conjunctive word. Ex: Becky went to the mall, and
Steve went home.
Replace the conjunctive word with a period (WARNING!! Doing this too often
can cause choppiness--see Lesson #1.) Ex: Becky went to the mall. Steve
went home.
Join and rephrase the two sentences. Ex: While Becky went to the mall, Steve
went home.
Use a semi-colon to join closely related sentences together. Ex: Becky went to
the mall; sadly, Steve went home.
Solving the Run-on
Problem Step 2:
If your run-ons don’t tend to appear in sentences with conjunctive
words, the solution is a little more difficult as there is no easy way to
make your word processing software find them. However, there is a
way to help find them.
Read your paper out loud, one sentence at a time, from the last
sentence to the first. This will take each sentence out of context and
help you see errors. However, you will want to be sure to look for one
problem at a time as you do this. If you’re trying to find several types
of errors at once, you are more likely to overlook the specific problem
of run-ons. Look at each sentence as a separate “text” and ask
yourself if it has more than one sentence in it. If so, follow the solution
examples on slide 3.
Comma Splices
A comma splice happens when two sentences are fused together with only a
comma between them.
Ex: Becky went to the mall Steve went home.
For most student writers, this happens where a conjunction would typically be
placed. In fact, run-ons and comma splices are “evil twins” because they more often
than not happen in the same place.
Ex: Becky went to the mall and Steve went home.
Solving the Comma
Splice Problem Part 1
As with run-ons, the easiest way to find
comma splices in your writing is through the
find feature on your word processing software.
In this case, look for a comma (type , into the
search bar). If there’s a complete sentence on
either side, it’s a comma splice.
Solving the Comma
Splice Problem Part 2
Correcting comma splices is fairly simple. You can do any of the following:
Insert a coordinating conjunction. Ex: Becky went to the mall, and Steve went
home.
Insert a semi-colon between closely related sentences. Ex: Becky went to the
mall; sadly, Steve went home.
Put a period between the sentences (WARNING!! Doing this too often may
lead to choppiness--see Lesson #1). Ex: Becky went to the mall. Steve went
home.
Join and rephrase the sentences. Ex: While Steve went home, Becky went to
the mall.

Lesson #2 comma splices and run ons

  • 1. Grammar Lesson #2: Run-ons and Comma Splices
  • 2. What are Run-ons? A run-on sentence is caused when two complete sentences are fused together without the appropriate punctuation. Ex: Becky went to the mall and Steve went home. Ex: Becky went to the mall Steve went home For most student writers, run-ons are often found within sentences that have a conjunctive word such as and, but, for, or, nor, or yet. If you find that many of the run-ons your instructor flags in your work can be found in sentences that have these words, the solution is simple!
  • 3. Solving the Run-on Problem Part 1 The first part of solving the run-on problem is finding them in your writing. If your run-ons tend to happen with a conjunctive word, the simple solution is to use the “Find” feature in your word processing software. Simply find the conjunctive word you tend to insert into your sentences and make one of the following changes: Put a comma before the conjunctive word. Ex: Becky went to the mall, and Steve went home. Replace the conjunctive word with a period (WARNING!! Doing this too often can cause choppiness--see Lesson #1.) Ex: Becky went to the mall. Steve went home. Join and rephrase the two sentences. Ex: While Becky went to the mall, Steve went home. Use a semi-colon to join closely related sentences together. Ex: Becky went to the mall; sadly, Steve went home.
  • 4. Solving the Run-on Problem Step 2: If your run-ons don’t tend to appear in sentences with conjunctive words, the solution is a little more difficult as there is no easy way to make your word processing software find them. However, there is a way to help find them. Read your paper out loud, one sentence at a time, from the last sentence to the first. This will take each sentence out of context and help you see errors. However, you will want to be sure to look for one problem at a time as you do this. If you’re trying to find several types of errors at once, you are more likely to overlook the specific problem of run-ons. Look at each sentence as a separate “text” and ask yourself if it has more than one sentence in it. If so, follow the solution examples on slide 3.
  • 5. Comma Splices A comma splice happens when two sentences are fused together with only a comma between them. Ex: Becky went to the mall Steve went home. For most student writers, this happens where a conjunction would typically be placed. In fact, run-ons and comma splices are “evil twins” because they more often than not happen in the same place. Ex: Becky went to the mall and Steve went home.
  • 6. Solving the Comma Splice Problem Part 1 As with run-ons, the easiest way to find comma splices in your writing is through the find feature on your word processing software. In this case, look for a comma (type , into the search bar). If there’s a complete sentence on either side, it’s a comma splice.
  • 7. Solving the Comma Splice Problem Part 2 Correcting comma splices is fairly simple. You can do any of the following: Insert a coordinating conjunction. Ex: Becky went to the mall, and Steve went home. Insert a semi-colon between closely related sentences. Ex: Becky went to the mall; sadly, Steve went home. Put a period between the sentences (WARNING!! Doing this too often may lead to choppiness--see Lesson #1). Ex: Becky went to the mall. Steve went home. Join and rephrase the sentences. Ex: While Steve went home, Becky went to the mall.
