Lesson 4Phase 1created by Coleen Latenser And Bunny rothenbergWhat Mistakes Should We Correct?
Examples of Mistakes That Should Be Corrected When the tutee replaces a word in the sentence with a word that doesn’t make sense.“The horse has a blue door.” vs. “The house has a blue door.”When a tutee reads in a manner that results in a sentence that doesn’t fit with the rest of the passage.“Army ants stay in a different palace every night.” (palace should be place)When the tutee makes a grammatical error.“After he locked the door, the telephone rungvs.“After he locked the door, the telephone rang
Examples of Mistakes That Should NOT be Corrected	If the error does not change the meaning of the sentence.“A bird’s nest was on the tree.”vs.“A bird’s nest was in the tree.”When the tutee eliminates “and” or “the,” but the sentence still makes sense.
Practice ActivityCorrecting Tutee MistakesEach of you will get a copy of “Scout, Go Home!”I am going to read the passage to you with some errors.Underline all the mistakes that I make while reading the passage.Go back and circle the mistakes that should be corrected. When you are done look at the Correction Guide to see if you circled the correct answers.
How Should Corrections Be MadeDo NOT stop the tutee in the middle of the sentence.Allow the tutee to finish the sentence before any correction is made.Wait a few seconds before you make the correction. If the tutee does not make the correction you should point to and pronounce the word that was missed.Next have the tutee repeat the word. The tutee should then read the entire sentence again.
