The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of Web Applications in the AWS Cloud - Jine...Amazon Web Services
Weighing the financial considerations of owning and operating a data center facility versus employing a cloud infrastructure requires detailed and careful analysis. In practice, it is not as simple as just measuring potential hardware expense alongside utility pricing for compute and storage resources. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is often the financial metric used to estimate and compare direct and indirect costs of a product or a service. Given the large differences between the two models, it is challenging to perform accurate apples-to-apples cost comparisons between on-premises data centers and cloud infrastructure that is offered as a service. In this presentation, we explain the economic benefits of deploying a web application in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud over deploying an equivalent web application hosted in an on-premises data center and highlight the 5 things to not forget while calculating TCO.

Leostream Webinar - OpenStack VDI and DaaSLeostream
OpenStack is changing the equation for virtual desktops and has the potential to turn VDI on its head.
Sneaking up through the ranks of open source software, OpenStack is increasingly being used to control large pools of compute, storage, and networking resources throughout a datacenter. Why not use it for your virtual desktop environments, as well?
This Desktone hosted webinar features IDC's Enterprise Virtualization Software Sr. Analyst Ian Song will discussing how businesses can elevate their desktops to the cloud easily and affordably. Desktops are ripe for change. Windows 7 migrations, mobile devices and cost overruns are driving businesses to seek an affordable and flexible alternative. Until now, cost and complexity have been barriers to implementing traditional Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions.
IDC and Desktone discuss the dynamics of the cloud, eliminating barriers to VDI, & benefits of moving desktops to the cloud. By moving desktops to a cloud-hosted service model, instead of an internally deployed and managed data center, companies can realize all the promised benefits of desktop virtualization—centralized management, improved data security and simplified deployment— without the exorbitant cost, limitations or hassles of VDI.

A cluster of these servers ran a mix of applications with up to 27 percent better application performance than a previous-generation cluster, which
could allow companies to do a given amount of work with fewer servers
Conclusion
As you do your best to balance timing, budget, IT resources, and your current and anticipated server needs, consider how opting for newer servers could help your business. As our testing showed, there are clear benefits to choosing servers that support such workload requirements as keeping databases running at a quick pace and delivering speedy hosting for your business’s website. Plus, a solution that offers the capacity and software features to perform well while natively supporting Kubernetes containers could add value in terms of setup, flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. And you can achieve all of this and possibly reduce OPEX in the process.
In our testing with a mixed workload that reflects some of the needs common to small and medium businesses, a cluster of 16G Dell PowerEdge R7615 single-socket servers powered by 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors outperformed a cluster of previous-generation 15G Dell PowerEdge R7515 servers, with improvements of up to 27 percent and latency reduction of up to 50 percent. These results show that upgrading to the new Dell solution can be a smart step toward meeting the needs of your users now and in the years to come.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

6. About Semi-Private Cloud
The majority of DaaS offerings are provided by
companies who build a semi-private cloud in
their data center.
The costs associated with
building the data center can
place a high price tag on
DaaS in the semi-private
cloud.
7. About Public Cloud
To overcome the cost hurdles associated with
semi-private clouds, some DaaS vendors turned
to the public cloud as their hosting providers.
Public clouds are managed by
respected enterprises such as
Amazon and HP and provide highly
available and secure platforms for
hosting desktops.
9. Semi-Private Cloud
Vendors that build their own data
center typically use well-established
virtualization platforms, such as those
by VMware or Citrix, and offer Microsoft
desktop operating systems, such as
Windows 7. Add-on licensing fees can
become quite expensive.
Public clouds, on the other hand,
include built-in Microsoft operating
system licenses for Windows Server
2008, which can be used along with a
Microsoft RDS CAL as a lower cost
cloud desktop operating system.
