Oedipus The King, The Iliad, And Lysistrata
In my World Civilization class, I have studied about the Greek Civilization. Alongside that, my
World Literature class studied the following literary works: Medea, Oedipus the King, the Iliad, and
Lysistrata. Learning about the Greek s philosophy, democracy, religion, the arts, and society helped
to clarify the literature works that I read. The meshing of these lectures has brought forth
overlapping themes that connect history and literature together as one. The Greek civilization
intertwined throughout their literature by many themes, ideas, and concepts. This combined
narrative reveals that history and literature often imitates each other such as the theme wrath among
civilizations, the concept of Arete, and the concept of Nike.

This concept means victory. The Spartans were very big on the idea of Nike. One of the famous
sayings from the Spartans was to come back victorious or come back on your shield. This meant
that if you did not bring home a victory than you were better off coming home dead. The
Spartans believed in this idea to the fullest extent. The concepts blended over into the play of
Medea with her wanting the last victory over her husband. It is not just Medea where this concept
was written about but it also showed up in the Iliad. Achilles wanted to live a short life with
victories rather than a long prosperous life. The literary works expressed the Greek s opinion of
Nike, not only through death, but in honor too. The play Lysistrata has this concept with the
women gaining the victory over the men. Oedipus the King also showed this concept when
Oedipus became victorious over the sphinx and gained the kingship of Thebes. The concept of Nike
is a prevalent one in both the Greek civilization and throughout the

James Hutton Biography
During the Scottish Enlightenment, a period of increased intellectual activity in the 18th and early
19th century, individuals tended to explore multiple disciplines of study (Young). One prominent
Scottish Enlightenment figure was James Hutton (1726 1797), who worked as a lawyer, geologist,
chemist, physician, farmer, and naturalist during his lifetime. Hutton, along with other significant
Enlightenment figures, Joseph Black and Adam Smith, founded the Oyster Club. This intellectual
club was based in Edinburgh and supplied a situation where a plethora of ideas from various topics
could be discussed (Furniss).
Hutton began his studies in Edinburgh, matriculating into the University of Edinburgh at the age of
fourteen in 1740. Despite his primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hutton s discoveries contrasted with the widely accepted geological interpretations that were
primarily based upon the Bible. The majority of people in his time explained the formation of all
rocks through the biblical account of the great flood. Evidence comes from the narrative presented
in Genesis in which God proclaims I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life
under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish
(New International Version, Gen. 6.17). From this account, it is interpreted that all rocks formed
when minerals precipitated out of the oceanic waters flooding Earth and were then redeposited to
form sedimentary rocks. In addition to explaining the formation of rocks, the Bible was further
referenced as evidence to calculate the age of Earth by Archbishop James Ussher in the 17th
century (Broadie, an Anthology). Ussher published in The Annals of the World, a document
containing the world s history from creation to 70 A.D., stating:
The difficulties of the Chronologers, perplexed by that love of contention, so termed by Basil,
being at last overpassed, I incline to this opinion, that from the evening ushering in the first day of
the World, to that midnight which began the first day of the Christian era, there was 4003 years,
seventy days, and six temporarie hours

countries. The Royal Dutch and Shell Company share equally in the Shell Company in the

Net Payoffs: The case stated that the one way commission is 5cents per share. New York has a two
way commission of 10 cents giving us a 25 cent commission. Shell (London) has 30 basis points
for commission for small trades since we are going for a round trip the total basis points would be
60 plus the 50 basis points for the Stamp Tax. Shell was quoted a spread of .03 divided by 8.63 x

(Amsterdam has a spread of 227.8 which is divided into .3 x 10000 giving us a 13 bps plus
commission of 30 cents per share going both ways for a total of 60 cents per share and a FX spread

The first arbitrage option will be 395,088 x 25 cents transaction cost =$98,772
You would then add the transaction cost in London $5000 x 151= $755,000
The total transaction cost for this would be $853,000.

The Woman At Point Zero
The woman occupies a unique role in the process of exchange. She has a dual relation to
capitalist culture as she both consumes it herself, but is physically used as a commodity in it as
well (Roberts 88). Due to this dual relation , she is able to move through the classes in a manner
similar to a commodity. Her mobility is performative and relies on surface appearances. In Woman
at Point Zero, Firdaus explains to the woman interviewing her that because of the wealth she
earned in prostitution she purchased expensive beauty products that allowed her to play the part
of an upper class woman despite her middle class education and lower class background
(Sadaawi Point Zero 14). As an object, a simple manipulation of her appearance can alter her
value. However her position is twofold. Not only is she a commodity, but she is a laborer as well,
performing a service for the acquisition of money. Firdaus equates all femaleworkers to prostitutes
(Sadaawi Point Zero 124). In the eyes of the patriarchy women are instruments of pleasure, passion,
and sexual satisfaction, or receptacles for bearing children, or commodities to be bought and sold in
the marriagemarket (Sadaawi Hidden Face 77). A woman worked is still under the patriarchal
control of the management and due to the oversexed culture, her body is still abused. The female
employee offers up her body to men above her within the company for job security or a minimal
pay raise. Firdaus resists objectifying herself in

The actual invention of the microprocessor took place somewhat before the 70s, with the first
notable product the AL 1: an 8 bit computer processor slice (an expandable portion of a larger
central processing unit) debuting in March of 1969. However the first commercially available
microprocessor, the 4004, was released in 1971 by Intel. Intel had already established itself as a
leader in the integrated circuit (IC) design industry before this point, mainly dealing with memory,
but made the leap into the microprocessor world after receiving a request from a customer to

Soon to be tech industries leaders, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were also members of the club,
eventually leaving to start their respective companies. This eventually became the home of the
Apple I computer, pioneered by Steve Wozniak and supported by Steve Jobs. Beginning as a
project in Wozniak s spare time, it eventually developed into the first product of Apple Personal
Computers Inc., launching in 1976. It a utilized a 6502 processor: a clone of the 6800 by MOS
Technologies, soon to be the basis of the Nintendo Entertainment System CPU in future decades. It
also featured a working keyboard and text video output, but required extensive assembly.
In 1974, Federico Faggin a member of the team that had worked on the original Intel 4004 MPU
left Intel to found Zilog. With funding from Exxon Corporation (a subsidiary of Exxon
Enterprises), Zilog was able to produce its first microprocessor, the Z80. It implemented and
expanded version of the existing Intel 8080 instruction set, allowing programs already written for
the popular Intel CPU to be easily ported to the platform. However, the Z80 also provided
increased performance and flexibility and a fraction of the cost, leading to its eventual dominance
in the desktop computer market.
Also in 1974, the first popular operating system was released: Control Program for Microcomputers
or CP/M.

Why I Learned A Valuable Moral Lesson
Stepping into a new environment and being a part of a new group are always a little uneasy, and
most people will worry a transfer to a place where they only know a little acquaintance. However, I
am always confident to overcome the nervousness, use my experience to blend in with the new
campus environment, and make a valued contribution. Being confronted with the challenge of
living in the unfamiliar environment empowers my curiosity, emboldens my desire to succeed, and
strengthens my foundation of preservation and self discipline. Through my experiences, I have
learned a valuable moral lesson is that everything has a price. If we keep our goal consistently,
work hard, and do not give up when things are difficult; eventually, the payback is worth the effort.
My popularity is also highlighted by my compassion, my ethical principles of treating people with
respect, charity and fairness no matter what their circumstances are. In the healthcare environment,
I believe that respect is very crucial in improving the patient experience. The volunteer experience at
many hospitals and communities teaches me appreciate the life value, the importance of diversity of
the population, and understand more relationship between human with human. These values will
strongly strengthen social connections between people and contribute to friendliness and cohesion
on campus. Besides that, volunteering at places where sickness and disadvantage existed gives me
a sense of belonging to humanity and

Mexican War
Daniel Timi His. 201 United States History to 1865 Professor Margiotta
The Mexican American War began on April 25, 1846. This placed the first U.S. armed conflict
chiefly fought on foreign soil. It marked politically dividend and militarily unprepared Mexico
against its expansionists minded administration of U.S. President James K. Polk. Polk strongly
believed the United States had an evident future to go across the continent in the Pacific Ocean. The
border encountered along the Rio Grande, which began with a fight, followed by a series of
numerous victories the United States. When the dust cleared, Mexico had lost roughly one third of
its region. The regions included all the states such as Arizona, New Mexico, California, and Utah.
At the end of the U.S. Mexican War, historians have divided into their explanations. Some historians
hold United States accountable while others put the blame on Mexico. The studies of the literature
show majority of writers have taken into consideration that neither country entirely unimpeachable.
Throughout the Mexican War there are several of causes, some which were minor and others of

The Biblical Flood and The Epic of Gilgamesh Flood
In Genesis of the Old Testament the account of the Flood approximates the account recorded on
Tablet 11of the Sumero Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh, discovered in the 1800 s by
British archaeologists in Assyria.
N.K. Sandars in the Introduction to his book, The Epic of Gilgamesh, sums up the involvement by
the pagan gods in the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative:
In the Gilgamesh flood Ishtar and Enlil are as usual the advocates of destruction. Ishtar speaks,
perhaps in her capacity as goddess of war, but Enlil prevails with his weapon of the storm. Only

In Column 2 of Tablet 11 the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative continues with the measurements
and construction of the ark:
One acre was its whole floorspace; ten dozen cubits the height of each wall;
ten dozen cubits its deck, square on each side.
I [Utnapishtim] laid out the contours, drew it all.
I gave it six decks
and divided it, thus, into seven parts.
Its innards I divided into nine parts.
I struck water plugs into it.
I checked the poles and laid in all that was necessary.
I poured 24,000 gallons of bitumen into the kiln;
the same amount I laid on the inside.
The basket bearers brought on three shars of oil
in addition to the shar of oil consumed in the seed meal
and the two shars of oil stowed away by the boatman.(Gardner 231)
On the seventh day the ark was completed. It was launched, and then loaded with all my kin and
family and with the animals of the fields. This ark has twice the number of floors as Noah s ark.
After the Jewish Old Testament establishes reasons for the Flood, then it proceeds with specific
building instructions to Noah in Genesis 6:14:

Brita Filters
Brita pour through filters remove impurities from tap water through the science of adsorption.
Different from absorption, adsorption happens when particles or molecules adhere to a surface.
The activated carbon and ion exchange resins in Brita filters attract and adsorb particles in tap
water, making it better tasting and cleaner. As with any pour through system, there is a limited
amount of surface area within the filter for adsorbing particles, which is why your filter needs to
be changed every 40 gallons or approximately every two months.
All Brita filters and containers are BPA free and keep your water tasting great. For over 20 years,
the scientists at BritaВ® have worked to give you healthier and great tasting water*. The BritaВ®
pitcher filter uses technology which combines coconut based activated carbon with ion exchange

But this also provides the chance to accidentally allow water pollutants like chlorine, mercury,
lead, and asbestos into the body on a gradual and daily basis. That s why it s very important to
make sure that your water is as clean as can be, since it is being used to help flush out your
system and help your organs function properly. The major claim made by Brita regarding its
water filters is that they remove enough of the bad stuff in tap water to make it taste better and
make it safe and healthy for drinking. They also claim that it is a far cheaper option than buying
bottled water, which infers that their water is just as clean as the kind you d buy in a bottle, either

Federalists vs. Democratic Republicans
The United States of America was founded on a Constitution that was supposed to preserve our
freedoms and certain liberties. All Americans at that time wanted to keep America a free an
independent nation with rights for its people. However there was two different groups, the
Federalists lead by Alexander Hamilton and the Democratic Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson,
which thought this could be achieved in very different ways. Thomas Jefferson and Alexander
Hamilton were very different in their methods to try and develop America as a nation. The two
were very much alike because they both were avid Americans, and wanted to see the nation
succeed. Both men were very involved in the U.S. Government and tried to voice their opinions on

The Federalist party, including Hamilton, supported the British more than the French. Federalists
wanted to stay neutral in the French Revolution. Someone who was polar opposite of Alexander
Hamilton in their views was Thomas Jefferson, a member of the Democratic Republican Party.
Jefferson was in favor of a smaller central government with more power to the states. He perceived
that it was unconstitutional to have the federal government to have so much influence on daily life.
Jefferson thought that agriculture should be the backbone of the economy. He also did not support
the idea of a central bank, Jefferson thought that the U.S. should pay off all of its debt and stay out
of business affairs. Those who labor in the earth are the chosen people of god.....for substantial and
genuine virtue (Document D). Thomas thought that America should be the voice of ALL of the
people so he wanted the common people to be able to have more of an influence in the government.
Jefferson did not trust the wealthy people in government and thought that the more down to earth
farmers and commoners would keep them in check. A very prominent difference in Hamilton and
Jefferson was their views on the constitution. Powers not delegated to the United States by the
Constitution,

The Negative Effects Of Animals In Zoos
Negative Effects of Animals in Zoos Zoos, often described as establishments with indoor and
outdoor settings where live animals are kept, play a vital role in conserving wild species. Zoo
establishments serve the purpose of educating zoo visitors about animals and for providing those
animals with proper care, but they are typically used for public exhibition. Most people see zoos
as places to take their children to learn more about animals, and as a form of entertainment by
allowing people to walk around and look at animals in cages. Others see zoos as places that confine
animals from their natural habitat, and as places that interfere with the natural order of the animals.
There are many factors that contribute to the negative effects of animals being in zoos, most being
the zoos management, faculty, and the visitors.
How zoo faculties are managed is one of the many ways that animals in zoos can be affected
negatively. According to Smit, [t]he obvious managerial goal with such facilities is to achieve a level
of integration of facilities and services, but a level of integration which is driven by the needs of
animals in any given zoological facility (Smit). Smit believes that facilities and services should be
combined in a way that has a favorable effect towards the animals. An example of this would be
when animal cages are built to accommodate their inhabitants (Smit). Animal cages must be
structured well enough for the safety of the animals and in a way that the

Essay On The Deaths Of Romeo And Juliet
Throughout time, there have been many tragedies caused by romance. William Shakespeare s
Romeo and Juliet is an example of a romantic tragedy, in which two feuding families cause the
deaths of their children, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. The play contrasts hatred and
revenge with love and a secret marriage, ending with the young lovers tragically dying. The
deaths of Romeo and Juliet can be blamed upon Friar Lawrence, the parents of Romeo and Juliet,
and Tybalt. To begin, Romeo and Juliet s deaths should be blamed upon Friar Lawrence. In the
play, Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him to Juliet. The friar tells Romeo to slow down and
think about this decision, but he still agrees to marry them. Shakespeare writes, I ll thy assistant...

They may feel that Romeo and Juliet should have made better, more rational decisions because the

upon the parents of Romeo and Juliet because they wouldn t have to make those decisions if the
parents ongoing feud was not existent. The text shows, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny

their feud only ended because their children died. In addition, after Romeo and Juliet are found

Flaws And Flaws Of Oedipus
It is fair to say that Oedipus had many flaws that would eventually allow him to go from being a
great king and savior of a city, to being a looked at very shamefully and ruining the city of Thebes.
Oedipus did some heroic things to get into certain positions throughout his life, but would ruin them
all with his cockiness, prowess, and over eccentric pride.
Oedipus did a very heroic feat, which was killing the sphinx outside the city of Thebes. This then
made the Thebians have major respect for him and elect him into being their king. Upon doing
this they looked at him as a respectable man who was very heroic and could take Thebes into the
direction they wanted to be heading. However, the Thebians didn t realize that he had a dark and
dreaded past that would come back to haunt him in the future.
One of Oedipus major flaws was how overconfident he was in himself. It is okay to be confident
and have basic confidence, but Oedipus would never take no for an answer and was overly
confident and cocky. Oedipus confidence led him to never believe that he as the one who was
forming and shaping his destiny to be the way that it was going to be. He saw nothing wrong
with disrespecting the gods and defiling their names. He also saw no problem in not believing
Teiresias, the prophet, who sees all and everything. He mocked Teiresias as well as tried to say he
was trying to overthrow him and betray him. Oedipus also didn t believe anyone and allowed his
confidence to blind him also

Museum of Art of Romania. The reason being, I would love to walk the halls of the museum
taking in all the beauty of the various paintings, sculptures, and relics of the past. During my
visit, I would like to witness in person the beauty of the Cranach Venus and Cupid painted by
Lucas Cranach the Elder. In the Cranach Venus and Cupid the painter used Line and Space for
Elements of Art and Proportion and Unity for the Principles of Design. As for the Composition, it
was an informal balance with the use of contrapposto which is an asymmetrical arrangement of the
human figure. As you see within the painting of Venus the lines for her arms contrast brilliantly
with hips and legs. I strongly believe this composition takes hold for the vast shape of her body
and emphasis on her as the protagonist of the oil painting. The use of the line helps bring a realistic
view of Venus

burners are Nazis. This also shows that the author is trying to relate to a historical event so that the
reader understands more about the
Holocaust. I agree that the author should imply an
element of historical events throughout the novel because it allows the reader to understand how
they individually might have responded to the Holocaust situation
Furthermore, during the Holocaust, the Nazis transported the Jews in small railway carts. The

Hills Like White Elephant Figurative Language
Ernest Hemingway, the author of Hills like White Elephants will leave his readers guessing due to
his vague information put into his short story, ВЁHills like White ElephantsВЁ. The understanding
of figurative language, sensory details, and the use inferencing skills are needed to interpret what
the author is trying to get across. If the short storyis analyzed carefully the reader will understand
that the couple in the story are deciding whether or not to have an abortion. Although abortion is
never blatantly said it is shown through prolific figurative language. Symbolism, simile, and
conflict are all prominent examples of figurative language throughout Hemingway s Hills like

Traditionally, a white elephant is a useless possession that is more times than not, unwanted. In
today s world we see white elephant gift exchanges where people will exchange unwanted gifts
to one another, usually popular among work colleagues or family gatherings. In Hills like White
Elephants the white elephant is the baby that Jig is unexpectedly carrying. Even though the
couple is in love neither the man nor the girl can decide what to do with the child the are
expecting. The baby would indeed be a gift, but it would also be a burden, this can be discovered
when the man states that We ll be fine afterward. Just like we were before (Hemingway 476).
The man obviously believes that if they decide to keep the baby then it will prevent them from
doing things they want to continue doing, and that is clear because he continues to badger Jig
about the situation they are in that it made Jig beg the man to stop, she pleads, Would you please
please please please please please please stop talking? (478). By this it is clear that Jig is truly
concerned about the situation that affects her life and just wants to stop talking about everything. It
is clear that the american man does not want to have the baby, the man has therefore treated Jig s
pregnancy like a burden or an illness (Rankin 236). Throughout the short story the man has
obviously been for the abortion and does not

Food Labeling And Consumer Associations With Health,...
Do you know what is happening with your eggs? According to Food Labeling and Consumer
Associations with Health, Safety, and Environment, as consumers become more increasingly
aware of where and how their food comes from, consumers have demanded for a larger need of
labels in their products. Labels, for the most part, give consumers insight on any given product but
have evolved as a way to mislead consumers into buying their products. This type of misleading
information is easily seen in the eggmarket; using labels to advertise certain aspects of their
products that is considered true throughout the industry as a whole, the use of double speak in
wording regarding labels, the labeling of certain type of eggs being perceived by consumers... Show

An increase in the price of eggs due to labels that reinforces a common practice among the whole
egg industry is problematic. Companies are taking advantage of consumers by making it seem that
their product is distinctly different than their competitors by adding a label. This label essentially
raises the price of their product, exploiting the consumers and taking their hard earned money. This
system, that puts costumers at a disadvantage for a profit, can also be seen with vague labeling.
Labels on any food product, including eggs, should be clear for consumers to understand. In
many cases, this is not accurate, companies use terms that are covered in double speak when
labeling to ensure consumers purchase their products. William Lutz defines double speak as a
form of communication that hides information and mislead the receiver of the message. In this
case, the receiver of this message are consumers. The USDA has allowed companies to use
double speak in their labels with terms that do not have a clear meanings and have a meaning that
are different from what consumers believe. For instance, When companies use the term fresh on
their labels, it is not exactly what consumers may believe. The USDA defines the term fresh for
poultry as never reaching twenty six degrees Fahrenheit but never clarifies how many days it has
been on display nor when it was slaughtered. Which means as consumers, the probability of buying

Gender Roles In The Fairy Tale
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm wrote their version of Cinderella in 1812. The fairy tale is about a
young girl who is forced to live with her two evil stepsisters and stepmother. Cinderella tries to be
positive and devout, even though her family is atrocious to her. In the end, the prince takes
Cinderella to his castle and they live happily ever after. The story describes the gender roles,
conflicts, and implies how the story has changed over time. Frequently in the story, the characters
traits are based on their gender. The women tend to be more focused on their outward appearance,
as the men look at and judge women on how beautiful they are. Cinderellawas a perfect archetype of
how women are judged today and throughout history. She... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Her stepmother didn t treat her very fairly either. She refused to let Cinderella go to the festival
because she was unkempt, and she didn t want Cinderella to ruin her reputation (Grimm 3). Her
stepmother also didn t want Cinderella to try on the shoe the prince brought because, again, she
was too dirty (Grimm 8). As well as Cinderella having bounteous rivalries with those in her
household, she probably also struggled with herself. When Cinderella s mom died, she told her
to Always be good and pious, and God will take care of you, and I will look down upon you from
heaven, and will be with you (Grimm 1). With all that Cinderella s been through, that must be
unimaginably hard to live by every day. Cinderella still pushed through the hardships and ends
up coming out on top. The story of Cinderella has changed countless ways throughout time.
Everyone tells a story differently and puts their own twist on it. Over time, all the details can
start to look completely different from the original. In the Disney version of Cinderella, there
was a fairy godmother who granted Cinderella s wish to go to the ball. The only condition was
that she be home by midnight or everything would disappear. In the original story, Cinderella puts
a hazel twig on her mother s grave, and it grows into a tree that has a bird who grants all of
Cinderella s wishes with no conditions (Grimm 2). The Disney and Grimm versions of Cinderella

What Is A Foreign Learning Experience
What kind of foreign language learning experiences have you had?
My first foreign language learning experiences go back to 1993 when I went to the English
Institute. That was located in Benghazi, and run by professionals from Garyounis University. I
learnt how to speak. I had to learn a short dialogue every day by heart. The students were given a
short dialogue, as a home work, to read and learn by heart with learning the implication. No
listening or writing skills. Only Reading and Speaking. Grammar points were pointed out by the
teacher and explained. Also, the teacher would monitor our pronunciation and make correction
when necessary. The learning process was mainly reading, memorizing and come the next day and
practice what had been learnt with other learners.

teaching English and language learning.
I believe that a learner must be a high flier and ambitious to learn the language. I don t believe in
spoon feeding. Learners should not be only receptive but also producers. Classroom activities are
important and can make the whole class contribute and get into interaction. This will help learners
to overcome their embarrassment and break the ice.
Despite the long years of experiences and working as second language teacher, I still feel not
satisfied with my standard.
I believe my experience in teaching EFL in an English language environment has benefited me a lot,
though.
I would like to think my experience of teaching English to both adults and children has allowed
me to contribute positively to any course of any group of learners of English. I believe my skills
have developed and make my teaching more effective. With a Celta course I am quite sure it will

This week I had the pleasure of sitting in on five hearings. On Monday Magistrate Akel allowed
me to observe a child support hearing where both parties were living in Iowa. The initial order
was given while the couple lived in Florida. When the father moved to Iowa he was ordered to pay
$509.00 dollars a month in child support. The mothersent the child to Iowa to visit his father for a
week but the child never came back to Florida. While the child was in the father s custody he
continued to pay child support to the mother. During the hearing, the father wanted to ensure that
his ex wife placed the money that she owed him into a depository account. The attorney
representing the father pointed out that she was behind in paying him back. The attorney as well as
the father believed that the she was using the money to support her other children. The mother
claimed that all of the money that she owed her ex husband was already in the depository.
Magistrate Akel made sure that the mother was aware that if the money was not there she would be

Basically the higher the speed of a vehicle, the more difficult collision avoidance becomes and
the greater the damage if a collision does occur. Speeding is defined as the act or an instance of
driving, especially a motor vehicle, faster than is allowed by law. Speeding is often one
component of aggressive driving which is defined as committing a combination of moving
traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property. There are strong direct relationships
between the speed at which we drive and the risk of crash involvement and the injuries sustained
if a crash results. The probability of injury and the severity of those injuries increases
exponentially with vehicle speed. Even small increases in speeds result in a large increase in
the forces experienced by the vehicle occupants or other road users. Put simply, the faster you
drive, the harder you hit and the more severe the injuries you or someone else are likely to suffer.
Traveling over the speed limit can be especially dangerous in bad weather conditions. Speeding

Science fiction is broadly defined as a film about the future or alternate realities, often but not
always set in space, and frequently incorporating horror elements, science fiction movies are
wildly popular among fans (Goodykoontz, 2014). As a subgenre of fantasy, science fiction
enables viewers to relate to themes from an idealized alternative version of reality (Edwards,
2014). Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope is a feature length film that fits this genre perfectly.
Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope unfolds as princess named Leia is held hostage by the evil
Imperial forces in their effort to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker

which are the heavenly paradise, hell, and Mount Purgatory, thereby revealing the celestial

West Nile Virus affects both our local communities and state communities. If the communities are
filled with infected mosquitoes that can cause these viruses, these mosquitoes can travel to other
mosquitoes, then to other states. For example if a community have stagnant water, the people in
the community will be at risk of getting the virus. People who are infected can also pass in on to
other people. Communities can reduce their risk of having the West Nile Virus by take some
precautions like the following:
Getting rid of old tires, bottles, tin cans or any container that can hold water.
Keeping drains and ditches free of trash and weeds so water can drain properly.
Keeping ruff gutter free.

Keeping grass cut short.
Unused pools should be drained and kept dry especially during mosquito season.

Organs are more viable when they are taken from a body that was continually pumping blood and
nutrients up until the harvest. In past years, movies and media have portrayed medical
professionals harvesting organs from living or brain active people. While this is just an
exaggeration playing on most people s common fears, it is not a total misinterpretation. The organ
market is in dire need of healthy, fresh organs and since demand is higher than supply a group of
people are being discriminated against when it comes to receiving organs they need. The number of
waitlisted patients over 65 years of age has tripled. Unfortunately, the transplant wait‐list has
increased far more quickly than the supply of deceased‐donor kidneys (Curtis). This increase of
older patients in need of kidneys leads to medial professionals making independent utilitarian
judgements on who deserves them most. The nation s organ transplant network is considering
giving younger, healthier people preference over older, sicker patients for the best kidneys.
Instead of giving priority primarily to patients who have been on the waiting list longest, the new
rules would match recipients and organs to a greater extent based on factors such as age and health
to try to maximize the number of years provided by each kidney the most sought after organ for

However, the snake soup was much fresh and sweet; I greatly enjoyed this soup. This was like a
surprise dinner because every dish possibly was snake meat.
Next morning, I saw two bottles of snake wine in my home. The snake wine was made for my
grandfather. It exactly looked like the one I saw in the pharmacy and was not far from the place
of our drinking water, so I would see the snake every day. Thus, I wouldn t forget the appearance
of snakes in my life.
The snake is a delicious food and a traditional Chinese medicine, although it is too scary. If I can,
I want to lose all memory of the watching the killing of those snakes, but I want to remember the
taste of the delicious soup. All things have many different appearances such as snakes have scary
appearance, but it can be a nice snake soup or a more horrible snake wine. This depends on which
way people want to see

Spies Of The American Revolution
Ceci Carmichael Mr. Lewis A.P. US History Period 4 11/19/14 Spies of the American Revolution
The American Revolution and the Revolutionary War was the starting point of America s
journey to become an independent country. The revolution was an aggressive movement to
finally be free of Britain once and for all. There were a lot of components in a victory for the
Americans: help from foreign countries, strong unity, home field advantage, and spies. Yes,
spies. The spies who were in the American Revolution played a crucial role in many aspects of
the war, including discovering acts of treason, learning British battle plans, and discovering
locations of different individuals and groups of the enemy. Throughout the entire war, there
were many individuals and groups that sent information all around, mostly in the New York and
New Jersey area. Perhaps the most well known spy is Nathan Hale. After graduating from Yale at
age 18, Nathan was given the rank of 1st Lieutenant when he joined the Continental army. A few
months later, he was promoted to captain and was given a command of Rangers to secure New
York City. On September 6, 1776, Hale enlisted to become a spy. Hale is not remembered for
being a spy, though. He imitated a school teacher, his previous job before the war. Hale s mission
was to collect intelligence behind enemy lines before the Battle of Harlem Heights. He slipped
behind enemy lines on Long Island and successfully gathered information about British troop battle

The Internet Is A Tool For The Mind And People Essay
The internet is probably the best invention we ever had. Our society can literally look up anything
they want and there will be answer online. You can look up anyone and find some type of
information on them. The internet is a tool for the mind and people can benefit tremendously off of
it or waste their time on social media and never reach their potential. Social commerceis the use of
social networks in the context of E commerce transactions. Social commerce involves using social
media, online media that supports social interaction, and user contributions to assist online buying
and selling of products and services. There are countless positive ways our society can use the
internet to benefit themselves. Making money online is a huge advantage for people. Twenty
years ago, it was unimaginable to think that the internet and what we have today was even
possible. No one thought we would have phones that can do everything from taking pictures, to
playing games, to looking something up on the internet. We are extremely fortunate as a society
because of all the tools we have. From the internet, we were able to add E commerce and we use
the internet every day in our lives.
EBay was the most popular social commerce company before Amazon. EBay has a peer to peer
platform and the company was founded in 1995. Customers can go on the website and sell anything
to anyone. Customers then bid on the items, with the auction lasting so long, and the highest bidder
wins. This platform also

The Dred Scott The United States Army
Dred Scott was of African descent and born in America. He was a slave in 1834. He belonged to
Dr. Emerson, a surgeon for the United States army. Scott and Dr. Emerson were originally located
in Missouri, a slave state. But, in the year 1834, Dr. Emersion took Scott to the Rock Island
Military Post in Illinois, a free state, where he worked for him as a slave. This continued until 1836,
when Dr. Emerson moved with Scott to Fort Snelling located in Upper Louisiana, a territory at the
time (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/supremecourt/antebellum/landmark_dred.html). Later, this territory
would enter the Union as a free state because of the Missouri Compromise (The Dred Scott
Decision 2013). While this was happening, Harriet, the eventual wife of Dred... Show more content

Emerson treated the entire family as his salves (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/supremecourt
/antebellum/landmark_dred.html). Just before the suit was filed, Dr. Emerson sold Dred Scott,
Harriet, and their two children to John F. A. Sandford. Sandford, considering the Scott family
his slaves, laid hands on them and imprisoned them many times (http://www.pbs.org/wnet
/supremecourt/antebellum/landmark_dred.html). These actions would be considered legal if
Harriet, Lizzie, Eliza, and Dred Scott were his slaves. Dred Scott wanted to challenge this. Due
to the Missouri Compromise, Illinois and the territory where Dr. Emerson had taken Dred Scott
and purchased Harriet, were free (Independence Hall Association 2013). Dred Scott sued his
owner, John Sandford, for assaulting himself, and his family. Scott openly admitted he was born
a slave and of African descent, but he also argued that once his owner took him and his family to
a free state and territory to exist in, his family became free from slavery. And since they were
free when Sandford moved them back to Missouri, Scott claimed it was illegal for Sandford to
assault him and his family. Scott also claimed he should be legally considered a citizen by the state.
These are the ideas on which Scott pursued to sue Sandford. His declaration specifically had three
counts: that Sandford assaulted Dred Scott that Sandford had assaulted Harriet,

Ruined Women In The Bluest Eye
Morrison also includes sexual scenes where characters willingly having sex to demonstrate
empowerment based on autonomy. The ruined women in The Bluest Eye are also the most
liberated characters in the novel. Marie, China, and Poland are sex workers that control their own
business; thus, making them independent and self reliant. Because these women are seen as
independent and sexually confident, their occupation as a sex worker suggests that they are
liberated from an oppressive society. As a result, they do not have to conform to societal norms:
They were whores in whore clothing, whores who had never been young and had no word for
innocence (57). They are not only comfortable with themselves, but they are also comfortable with

Claude Monet Accomplishments
Through a series of solid strokes of paint in his canvas, Monet managed to present society with a
completely new outlook, literally, on one s visual aspect. Claude Oscar Monet, famous French
painter, was a highly innovative artist back in the 1800s. His works inspired other artists who
followed suite and teamed up promptly with Monet, soon enough gaining for themselves the title of
The Impressionists. He contributed not only to the art culture, but also to the entirety of society
through his paintings as if telling the world not to be afraid of anything different and emphasized
the importance to look at things with deeper perception other than that which our vision enables us
to see. Claude Oscar Monet is also known as the father of Impressionism,... Show more content on

The painting Impression: Sunrise, or Impression: Soleil Levant, was what brought Monet his
greatest success. It hung in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and is now displayed in the
MusГ©e Marmottan Moret, Paris (Biography 2). Even though this was not his first or best
painting it is the one that has left the most mark, for it was the initial spark for Impressionism. It
was this success that earned him and other fellow artists the title of the Impressionists. Monet
began to earn great amounts of money and was able to move out to his dream home in Giverny.
Monet s fortunes began to change for the better as his dealer Paul Durand Ruel had increasing
success in selling his paintings (Biography 2). Money might not always be everything, but his
profit was what enabled Monet to move further ahead. Monet s further gain in income allowed
him to find his perfect home and travel more, making him more known to others. If it hadn t been
because of Monet s success, the world we know today, as well as the artistic aspect of our culture,
would be missing a very important aspect; the essence of

Analysis of When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats Essay
Analysis of When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats
When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats, represents and elderly woman reminiscing of her
younger days. A past lover whispers to her as she looks through a photo album. Basically, Yeats is
showing that as the woman gets older, she is alone, but she does not have to be lonely. She will
always have her memories for companionship.
When you are old and grey and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire (l.1 2) depicts the woman in
her age, needing to nap more frequently. He speaks of a book (l.2) and the soft look of her eyes (l.3
4). This book signifies a photo album that contains pictures of her as young adult.
Yeats speaks of her glad grace (l.5) as her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
?And love the sorrows of your changing face? (l.8) means simply that even as her face aged, the
love he felt for her grew stronger.
?And bending down beside the glowing bars,? (l.9) could be translated to ?as you?re bending
down to stoke the fire,? she?ll mumble to herself about his death, ?how Love fled? (l.10) and his
soul climbing to heaven to live ?amid a crowd of stars? (l.12).
In the last verse of When you are Old, William Butler Yeats uses personification of love to
enhance the image of the late lover waiting for the elderly woman. Lines 10 12 ?Murmur, a little
sadly, how Love fled, and paced upon the mountains overhead and hid his face amid a crowd of
stars? give personal qualities to love. By capitalizing love, it becomes its own being, which waits
impatiently, hence pacing the mountain. Yeats gives love a face hidden in the stars. The ?face? is
love?s distinguishing characteristics, such as tenderness and sensitivity.
The conclusion of When You are Old leaves the woman smiling to herself over the memories she
has. She knows that one day she will be reunited with her true love, so she can live the remainder
of her life peacefully.
I personally love this poem. It leaves me with a feeling of contentment, just thinking that someone
with a little age, and all alone can look back upon her life and keep smiling until it is her time to
be united with her soul mate. Usually when we consider the elderly, it is in a

Women s Roles In The Meiji Restoration
Women s Roles in the Meiji Restoration
The Meiji Restoration marked a time in Japanese history that dealt with domestic turmoil... national
integration and unification (Part 1 Intro). They went through the process of defending against
westernization and actively taking part in international affairs. During this era, prefectures
appointed by the emperor replaced the daimyo. The population doubled and quality of life
improved. People moved towards a more urban lifestyle and by 1900, Edo was the largest city in
world. Nevertheless, in the midst of all the growth, the attitude towards women and their roles in
society remained stagnant. Japanese society treated women as subhuman instead of actual citizens
due to the belief that they were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women s roles were limited during the Meiji Restoration. Independent women were looked down
upon. They were not expected to maintain their own separate job (332). According to January
1842: Directive to the Wards , the only work suitable for women [was] sewing or laundry (1065).
If they do anything else for example, hairdressing, they were forced to change their occupation
(1065). In the event that they did have a job, women could not make a lot of money. In fact, one
instance in October 21, 1842: Injunctions to Farmers states that when farmers sought
employment and the wages increased, they said that the women were making too much money
(1117). In addition to lack of decent jobs, women were even prohibited from teaching men as
seen in the document April 25, 1842: Directive to the Wards (1090). This exhibited the idea that
men should teach men and practices taught by women to men were unnecessary (1090). This
evidence shows must always be in subservient role. She may never be above a man. The Meiji
Restoration was a time of trouble for Japan. Battles were fought and lives were lost. During this
stage, women aided by caring for warriors. In accordance with Yamakawa Misako s account, the
women s duties were to cooked rations, made bullets, and tended to the wounded (2721). They
were discouraged to fight, however. Women in battle looked bad on the country (2708).
Nevertheless, in a time of incredible need, the Aizu

Of Mice And Men Unfinished Children Of God Analysis
Many of the characters in John Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men could be considered unfinished
children of God based on their lifestyle. Lennie Small, Carlson, and Candy are unfinished
children of God because they lack purity, completeness, and their lives are filled with
imperfections and loneliness. Everything that Steinbeck wrote had a purpose. For instance,
Clara, the owner of the other cathouse, is actually Lennie s aunt. Lennie was the product of
prostitution, this could be the reason he lacks developmental skills. Although not every
character has a unique backstory, their lives still lack similar qualities. In Of Mice and Men,
Lennie is a character with remarkable strength despite having a mind of a child. Lennie does not
understand much that occurs around him or even his own strength. Lennie considers the
character George Milton as a guardian because he is a leader and guides Lennie to make good
decisions. Lennie is distraught when George is not there to instruct him and the absence of
George results in unnecessary casualties and severe consequences. Throughout the book,
Steinbeck compares Lennie to different animals. Lennie is compared to a horse when he snorts
into the water like a horse, he is also compared to a bear when he drags his feet a little, the way a
bear drags his paws. Steinbeck wants the readers to understand that Lennie has a simple mind
and that his actions are not meant to be hostile or malicious. Most children are given toys to play
with during their childhood, however, Lennie was given mice to pet. His childhood toy later
fuels his obsession of petting soft things, whether it is fur, fabric, or hair. Sadly, death is
unavoidable for Lennie because of his lack of intelligence and self control. When Lennie is
killed, it is out of love for him, not hatred. Lennie is an unfinished child of God because his life
lacks development and is filled with imperfection. Carlson, a powerful, big stomached man is a
minor character in this novel when compared to George or Lennie, however, he suffers a lack of
purity and is careless towards the feelings of others. Carlson shoots an innocent dog and then
proceeds to casually clean his gun. When George kills Lennie and

  • 2. Oedipus The King, The Iliad, And Lysistrata In my World Civilization class, I have studied about the Greek Civilization. Alongside that, my World Literature class studied the following literary works: Medea, Oedipus the King, the Iliad, and Lysistrata. Learning about the Greek s philosophy, democracy, religion, the arts, and society helped to clarify the literature works that I read. The meshing of these lectures has brought forth overlapping themes that connect history and literature together as one. The Greek civilization intertwined throughout their literature by many themes, ideas, and concepts. This combined narrative reveals that history and literature often imitates each other such as the theme wrath among civilizations, the concept of Arete, and the concept of Nike. To begin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This concept means victory. The Spartans were very big on the idea of Nike. One of the famous sayings from the Spartans was to come back victorious or come back on your shield. This meant that if you did not bring home a victory than you were better off coming home dead. The Spartans believed in this idea to the fullest extent. The concepts blended over into the play of Medea with her wanting the last victory over her husband. It is not just Medea where this concept was written about but it also showed up in the Iliad. Achilles wanted to live a short life with victories rather than a long prosperous life. The literary works expressed the Greek s opinion of Nike, not only through death, but in honor too. The play Lysistrata has this concept with the women gaining the victory over the men. Oedipus the King also showed this concept when Oedipus became victorious over the sphinx and gained the kingship of Thebes. The concept of Nike is a prevalent one in both the Greek civilization and throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. James Hutton Biography During the Scottish Enlightenment, a period of increased intellectual activity in the 18th and early 19th century, individuals tended to explore multiple disciplines of study (Young). One prominent Scottish Enlightenment figure was James Hutton (1726 1797), who worked as a lawyer, geologist, chemist, physician, farmer, and naturalist during his lifetime. Hutton, along with other significant Enlightenment figures, Joseph Black and Adam Smith, founded the Oyster Club. This intellectual club was based in Edinburgh and supplied a situation where a plethora of ideas from various topics could be discussed (Furniss). Hutton s discoveries contrasted with the widely accepted geological interpretations that were primarily based upon the Bible. The majority of people in his time explained the formation of all rocks through the biblical account of the great flood. Evidence comes from the narrative presented in Genesis in which God proclaims I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish (New International Version, Gen. 6.17). From this account, it is interpreted that all rocks formed when minerals precipitated out of the oceanic waters flooding Earth and were then redeposited to form sedimentary rocks. In addition to explaining the formation of rocks, the Bible was further referenced as evidence to calculate the age of Earth by Archbishop James Ussher in the 17th century (Broadie, an Anthology). Ussher published in The Annals of the World, a document containing the world s history from creation to 70 A.D., stating: The difficulties of the Chronologers, perplexed by that love of contention, so termed by Basil, being at last overpassed, I incline to this opinion, that from the evening ushering in the first day of the World, to that midnight which began the first day of the Christian era, there was 4003 years, seventy days, and six temporarie hours ... • 5. The Woman At Point Zero The woman occupies a unique role in the process of exchange. She has a dual relation to capitalist culture as she both consumes it herself, but is physically used as a commodity in it as well (Roberts 88). Due to this dual relation , she is able to move through the classes in a manner similar to a commodity. Her mobility is performative and relies on surface appearances. In Woman at Point Zero, Firdaus explains to the woman interviewing her that because of the wealth she earned in prostitution she purchased expensive beauty products that allowed her to play the part of an upper class woman despite her middle class education and lower class background (Sadaawi Point Zero 14). As an object, a simple manipulation of her appearance can alter her value. However her position is twofold. Not only is she a commodity, but she is a laborer as well, performing a service for the acquisition of money. Firdaus equates all femaleworkers to prostitutes (Sadaawi Point Zero 124). In the eyes of the patriarchy women are instruments of pleasure, passion, and sexual satisfaction, or receptacles for bearing children, or commodities to be bought and sold in the marriagemarket (Sadaawi Hidden Face 77). A woman worked is still under the patriarchal control of the management and due to the oversexed culture, her body is still abused. Why I Learned A Valuable Moral Lesson Stepping into a new environment and being a part of a new group are always a little uneasy, and most people will worry a transfer to a place where they only know a little acquaintance. However, I am always confident to overcome the nervousness, use my experience to blend in with the new campus environment, and make a valued contribution. Being confronted with the challenge of living in the unfamiliar environment empowers my curiosity, emboldens my desire to succeed, and strengthens my foundation of preservation and self discipline. Through my experiences, I have learned a valuable moral lesson is that everything has a price. If we keep our goal consistently, work hard, and do not give up when things are difficult; eventually, the payback is worth the effort. My popularity is also highlighted by my compassion, my ethical principles of treating people with respect, charity and fairness no matter what their circumstances are. In the healthcare environment, I believe that respect is very crucial in improving the patient experience. The volunteer experience at many hospitals and communities teaches me appreciate the life value, the importance of diversity of the population, and understand more relationship between human with human. These values will strongly strengthen social connections between people and contribute to friendliness and cohesion on campus. Different from absorption, adsorption happens when particles or molecules adhere to a surface. The activated carbon and ion exchange resins in Brita filters attract and adsorb particles in tap water, making it better tasting and cleaner. As with any pour through system, there is a limited amount of surface area within the filter for adsorbing particles, which is why your filter needs to be changed every 40 gallons or approximately every two months. All Brita filters and containers are BPA free and keep your water tasting great. For over 20 years, the scientists at BritaВ® have worked to give you healthier and great tasting water*. • 18. The Negative Effects Of Animals In Zoos Negative Effects of Animals in Zoos Zoos, often described as establishments with indoor and outdoor settings where live animals are kept, play a vital role in conserving wild species. Zoo establishments serve the purpose of educating zoo visitors about animals and for providing those animals with proper care, but they are typically used for public exhibition. Most people see zoos as places to take their children to learn more about animals, and as a form of entertainment by allowing people to walk around and look at animals in cages. Others see zoos as places that confine animals from their natural habitat, and as places that interfere with the natural order of the animals. There are many factors that contribute to the negative effects of animals being in zoos, most being the zoos management, faculty, and the visitors. How zoo faculties are managed is one of the many ways that animals in zoos can be affected negatively. According to Smit, [t]he obvious managerial goal with such facilities is to achieve a level of integration of facilities and services, but a level of integration which is driven by the needs of animals in any given zoological facility (Smit). Smit believes that facilities and services should be combined in a way that has a favorable effect towards the animals. An example of this would be when animal cages are built to accommodate their inhabitants (Smit). Animal cages must be structured well enough for the safety of the animals and in a way that the ... • 20. Essay On The Deaths Of Romeo And Juliet Throughout time, there have been many tragedies caused by romance. William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet is an example of a romantic tragedy, in which two feuding families cause the deaths of their children, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. The play contrasts hatred and revenge with love and a secret marriage, ending with the young lovers tragically dying. The deaths of Romeo and Juliet can be blamed upon Friar Lawrence, the parents of Romeo and Juliet, and Tybalt. To begin, Romeo and Juliet s deaths should be blamed upon Friar Lawrence. In the play, Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him to Juliet. The friar tells Romeo to slow down and think about this decision, but he still agrees to marry them. Flaws And Flaws Of Oedipus It is fair to say that Oedipus had many flaws that would eventually allow him to go from being a great king and savior of a city, to being a looked at very shamefully and ruining the city of Thebes. Oedipus did some heroic things to get into certain positions throughout his life, but would ruin them all with his cockiness, prowess, and over eccentric pride. Oedipus did a very heroic feat, which was killing the sphinx outside the city of Thebes. This then made the Thebians have major respect for him and elect him into being their king. Upon doing this they looked at him as a respectable man who was very heroic and could take Thebes into the direction they wanted to be heading. However, the Thebians didn t realize that he had a dark and dreaded past that would come back to haunt him in the future. One of Oedipus major flaws was how overconfident he was in himself. It is okay to be confident and have basic confidence, but Oedipus would never take no for an answer and was overly confident and cocky. Oedipus confidence led him to never believe that he as the one who was forming and shaping his destiny to be the way that it was going to be. He saw nothing wrong with disrespecting the gods and defiling their names. He also saw no problem in not believing Teiresias, the prophet, who sees all and everything. This part of the study, although a different condition, confirms that these parents that are willing to let their child die because they are disabled and are a part of the population who are affected by this new order of utilitarian judgement. Medical advances teeter on respect for autonomy and abandonment of someone deemed to have a life not worth living. Organs are more viable when they are taken from a body that was continually pumping blood and nutrients up until the harvest. In past years, movies and media have portrayed medical professionals harvesting organs from living or brain active people. While this is just an exaggeration playing on most people s common fears, it is not a total misinterpretation. The organ market is in dire need of healthy, fresh organs and since demand is higher than supply a group of people are being discriminated against when it comes to receiving organs they need. The number of waitlisted patients over 65 years of age has tripled. Unfortunately, the transplant wait‐list has increased far more quickly than the supply of deceased‐donor kidneys (Curtis). This increase of older patients in need of kidneys leads to medial professionals making independent utilitarian judgements on who deserves them most. The nation s organ transplant network is considering giving younger, healthier people preference over older, sicker patients for the best kidneys. Instead of giving priority primarily to patients who have been on the waiting list longest, the new rules would match recipients and organs to a greater extent based on factors such as age and health to try to maximize the number of years provided by each kidney the most sought after organ for transplants (Stein). • 48. Analysis of When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats Essay Analysis of When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats, represents and elderly woman reminiscing of her younger days. A past lover whispers to her as she looks through a photo album. Basically, Yeats is showing that as the woman gets older, she is alone, but she does not have to be lonely. She will always have her memories for companionship. When you are old and grey and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire (l.1 2) depicts the woman in her age, needing to nap more frequently. He speaks of a book (l.2) and the soft look of her eyes (l.3 4). This book signifies a photo album that contains pictures of her as young adult. Yeats speaks of her glad grace (l.5) as her ... (l.8) means simply that even as her face aged, the love he felt for her grew stronger. ?And bending down beside the glowing bars,? (l.9) could be translated to ?as you?re bending down to stoke the fire,? she?ll mumble to herself about his death, ?how Love fled? (l.10) and his soul climbing to heaven to live ?amid a crowd of stars? (l.12). In the last verse of When you are Old, William Butler Yeats uses personification of love to enhance the image of the late lover waiting for the elderly woman. Lines 10 12 ?Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled, and paced upon the mountains overhead and hid his face amid a crowd of stars? give personal qualities to love. By capitalizing love, it becomes its own being, which waits impatiently, hence pacing the mountain. Yeats gives love a face hidden in the stars. The ?face? is love?s distinguishing characteristics, such as tenderness and sensitivity. The conclusion of When You are Old leaves the woman smiling to herself over the memories she has. She knows that one day she will be reunited with her true love, so she can live the remainder of her life peacefully. I personally love this poem. It leaves me with a feeling of contentment, just thinking that someone with a little age, and all alone can look back upon her life and keep smiling until it is her time to be united with her soul mate. • 50. Of Mice And Men Unfinished Children Of God Analysis Many of the characters in John Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men could be considered unfinished children of God based on their lifestyle. Lennie Small, Carlson, and Candy are unfinished children of God because they lack purity, completeness, and their lives are filled with imperfections and loneliness. Everything that Steinbeck wrote had a purpose. For instance, Clara, the owner of the other cathouse, is actually Lennie s aunt. Lennie was the product of prostitution, this could be the reason he lacks developmental skills. Although not every character has a unique backstory, their lives still lack similar qualities. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie is a character with remarkable strength despite having a mind of a child. Lennie does not understand much that occurs around him or even his own strength. Lennie considers the character George Milton as a guardian because he is a leader and guides Lennie to make good decisions. Lennie is distraught when George is not there to instruct him and the absence of George results in unnecessary casualties and severe consequences. Throughout the book, Steinbeck compares Lennie to different animals. Lennie is compared to a horse when he snorts into the water like a horse, he is also compared to a bear when he drags his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. Steinbeck wants the readers to understand that Lennie has a simple mind and that his actions are not meant to be hostile or malicious. Most children are given toys to play with during their childhood, however, Lennie was given mice to pet. His childhood toy later fuels his obsession of petting soft things, whether it is fur, fabric, or hair. Sadly, death is unavoidable for Lennie because of his lack of intelligence and self control. When Lennie is killed, it is out of love for him, not hatred. Lennie is an unfinished child of God because his life lacks development and is filled with imperfection. Carlson, a powerful, big stomached man is a minor character in this novel when compared to George or Lennie, however, he suffers a lack of purity and is careless towards the feelings of others.
