Death as a theme in storytelling has always been popular for centuries. Experiencing
someone important dying is an idea people have an inherent connection to. The
difference is how one perceives death and how one deals with it on an emotional
level. There are countless examples of books with different, unique interpretations of
death, but this essay will focus on just two: Katherine Mansfield s The Garden Party
and Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. Both of these stories have main characters that
must come to terms with death, but the ways they go about it and the conclusions
they come to are vastly different. Death as a literary device to shows the benefits of
freedom in accepting situations that people do not have the power to change in both

Death in The Garden Party evolves from being a horrible part of our existence into
being a beautiful, peaceful conclusion of someone s life. This change in perception
comes to the main character, Laura, as she matures from a child into an adult. As
Laura changes throughout the story she goes from treating death as a tragedy to
accepting it as a natural event in everyone s life. After she visits the woman whose
husband died the narrator states What did garden parties and baskets and lace
frocks matter to him? He was far from all those things (Mansfield 81). This
interpretation of Laura s feelings by the narrator shows how now she thinks death is
not such a horrible event, but rather can be a positive outcome of sorts. To Laura,
death can free a person from the material world and all of its frivolous inhabitants.
Growing up with her well off family, particularly her mother, put a great deal of
emphasis on money and material possession. Experiencing death for the first time
introduces Laura to the elements of life that are more important than owning
expensive stuff. The theme of death in The Garden Party is a method for
demonstrating the growth of Laura as a person.
Loss and death in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is a major plot device throughout the
entirety of the novel. Victor Frankenstein catalyzed the events of the book with his

organizations to structure their operations through the form of corporate groups, with
many domestic and international subsidiaries, wholly owned or otherwise, with the
corporate veil ensuring that each of these enjoy separate corporate legal personality
and limited liability. The existence of these corporate groups , with subsidiary
companies being heavily controlled by their parent companies, have necessitated
interpretations and applications of existing corporate legal principles to this novel
context, even in case of the basic tenets of corporate law. The circumstances
associated with corporate veil piercing, through detailed consideration of conditions
to treating holding and subsidiary companies as one legal unit, with associated civil
liabilities, is also an issue of heated debate.

and Identity the directors have given contrasting representations of insanity, its

or campaigning I guess to be the leader. But we meet so infrequently. Number of
students can influence the choosing process, but this student leader pointed to a lack

Communication The most meaningful communication seemed to arise from face to

I was thinking that Frost wanted to basically put a question on our minds, If you
had to choose a way to die would you choose fire or ice? In lines seven through
nine, To say that destruction ice is also great and would suffice . To me this is
saying you would have to choose the lesser of the two evils. Weighting the pros
and cons of the two. Asking which one is better for you, a cold slow death or a hot
slow death. But in the end of the poem Frost is saying the no matter which one he

think that Frost is using it in a negative sense, because he is uses words like end,

drive to win or receive something at any cost, the urge for power, which is very

The Decision that should matter but do not The modern era, politically, has been
defined by the right of everyone s own decision, for who s in power, what they do
in power and how to stop them if they get too powerful. It was the individual s
decision to let one into power. Of course if a country did not do this, we as
Americans would see that as backwards and not right to the point of military
intervention when in our own nation we do not get full say in who become
president. The decision making does not include world leaders but also includes
the day to day decisions and our own life decisions we make every day, such as our

by just simply giving the individuals more choice in the world. Schwartz then later in
the lecture goes on to explain how this ever growing amount of choice can lead to
a paralysis of choice. According to Schwartz this paralysis is being exemplified by

instead of giving more choices equals a better life, now more choices means no

negative consequences than positive ones. The mere fact that the Merrymen are
growing at such a fast pace suggests that the present strategy is beginning to be
obsolete, and furthermore, travelers are wiser and are avoiding Sherwood Forest
altogether. This means that Robin Hood s and the band s revenue will decrease and
they will not be able to continue to operate and keep the insurrection alive.
