Hippolytus, Troilus And Criseyde And The City Of Women
In ancient literature, interactions between women are rare, but when they do occur
they help develop the state of a woman, both mentally and emotionally. In studying
several examples from ancient texts such as Hippolytus, Troilus and Criseyde, and
The City of Ladies, it is evident that positive interactions between womenact as a
strengthening factor for female characters. Conversely, when a womanshuns her
peers and relies on herself or only the men in her life, she becomes weak and isolated.
A prime example of this latter cause and effect relationship occurs in one of
Euripides s famous tragedies. In Hippolytus, Queen Phaedra is cursed with love for
the titular character, her son in law. She is horrified by this development and
grows ill. Phaedra s nurse comforts her during her distress, pointing out the women
standing at [her] side to help (294). All of Phaedra s attendants are willing to help,
and even after she reveals the horrifying secret of her love, the women still offer
their assistance. The nurse, though distressed at first, eventually recovers and
reassures Phaedra that they will find some remedy for [her] lovesickness (479).
The loyalty and willingness to help shown by other women releases Phaedra from
her isolation and gives her an opportunity to be relieved of the terrible burden she
carries. It makes Phaedra a stronger character, because she is no longer only relying
on herself.
The nurse decides to tell Hippolytus about the queen s love, hoping this will solve
their dilemma. Even when Phaedra expresses her reservations about the solution, the
nurse dismisses her and forges ahead with her plan. This is the first sign of a
breakdown in their relationship; neither woman fully trusts the other to talk about
and agree on a solution. When the nurse s solution causes Hippolytus to fly into a
rage and condemn them both, Phaedra calls the nurse a corrupted, damned seducer
of [her] friends (682). When the nurse tries to defend the good intentions of her
actions, Phaedra dismisses her with a cold, speak no more to me (706). She refuses to
find a compromise or understanding with the nurse, and does not trust her enough to
give her a second chance. Instead, she turns to spiteful insults and pushes

The purpose of punishment is to keep an incident from reoccurring. While
punishment doesn t keep it from happening again, it helps. Execution and the death
penalty have been used in most societies since the beginning of history. Penalties
back then included boiling to death, flaying, slow slicing, crucification, impalement,
crushing, stoning, decapitation, etc. The death penalty was used for reasons today
that would go under cruel and unusual punishment. Today in the United States,

For the Third Quarter SSR Project I chose the book Both Sides Of Time by
Caroline B. Cooney. I settled on this fiction book not only because I ve read all
three books in Cooney s series Time Travelers Quartet, but it just so happens to be
my favorite out of all of them. This book is gripping to me because of the events
happening in the book. A hopeless romantic going back in time, involved in two love
triangles in two different centuries, then forced to leave one that she loves either
way. I relish reading any kind of love stories, but I especially enjoyed this one

thought that now that Ms. Lockwood had Strat s eyes only for on her, she wouldn t
