By preserving the south and east façades of the historic warehouses, using a very energy-efficient curtainwall, and employing green roof technologies, Atlantic Wharf will be the a centerpiece of Boston's green development.
INTEGRATION OF GREEN FACADES IN HIGHRISE COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS.pdfAtharv Mehta
This research has been emphasized on integration of plants in highrise building through green facades design which play a vital role for the energy conservation by the building as well as improving the living quality into these vertical cities. In this study, it has been studied to establish the necessity of planting to incorporate into highrise building, for
10
the well being of our economy, society and the environment. The provisions of integrate plants into highrise includes the four possible options like, Green roof, Green wall, Biofilter and Indoor potting plants which can be incorporate into the design. Benefits and impacts have been studied in terms of energy savings and indoor environmental qualities.
NEED OF PROJECT:
Aesthetic enhancement and sound reduction are the common benefits of green facades. They can also serve as an “extra insulation” of the building envelope. In winter, evergreen vegetation layer decreases the wind flow around the building façade. In addition heat radiation of the external walls is insulated by the dense plant foliage and thus help prevent building to be cooled down. Of all sun light that falls on the leaves, merely 5–30% of energy is passed through the leaf. The others may be reflected, transformed into heat, used for photosynthesis or evapotranspiration. This blocking of the direct sunlight disposal ensures a cooling effect in warmer climates and help the reduction of heat island effect especially in urban areas. Due to the evapotranspiration, green façades cool the heated air through evaporation of water. A research in Australia quantified energy saving and indicated that the green façade can save 9.5-18% of the cooling energy consumption in commercial buildings. Relevantly improves the building’s energy efficiency and produces ecological benefits for a more sustainable urban environment. The green envelope also reduces the quantity of UV light and cause a positive effect on building durability.
The document discusses several rural and sustainable building projects from around the world:
1. Mbaru Niang in Indonesia renovates traditional thatched-roof conical houses using local worok wood and bamboo construction techniques.
2. Leti 360 resort in India's Himalayas is built into agricultural terraces using local stone, wood, and glass with expansive mountain views. Materials are sourced locally and transported by porters to minimize environmental impact.
3. The Volontariat Orphanage in India uses an experimental "fired mud" construction technique and upcycled materials like bicycle frames and glass bottles to create an affordable housing project.

The primary goal of the GGU University Library is to help students develop the research skills needed for academic and professional success. To achieve this, the library conducts surveys of students and faculty to understand needs and assess services. Analysis of usage statistics also informs the library's objectives. Key findings indicate students want easy access to library resources from mobile devices and a single search across databases. The library has implemented a single search and mobile access to the catalog and website to address these needs based on survey feedback.

Terra incognita with no GPS: A case study approach to mapping assessmentMargot
Amy Hofer & Margot Hanson. From Loex-of-the-West 2010 conference program: "We need evidence of our value to justify the library budget, gain buy-in from faculty, and please accreditors, but the process of gathering meaningful evidence can be quite a challenge. After all, were you trained to do this kind of research? Neither were we, but the Assessment Coordinator that our university hired in preparation for a WASC visit guided us through our study design. Drawing on this relationship with a neutral expert outside the library, two business librarians at Golden Gate University designed an effective learning assessment of our instruction to our school’s intensive ESL program. We’ll use the valuable lessons we learned as a starting point for small-group exploration of some real-world assessment territory."
Upstairs-downstairs: Working with a campus assessment coordinator and other a...Margot
Guess what -- you don't need to do learning assessment on a 45-minute one-shot presentation. Instruction librarians at Golden Gate University learned this and much more when an Assessment Coordinator arrived to help prepare our school for WASC. Oakleaf & Hinchliffe (2008) identify lack of coordination as one of the barriers librarians face in conducting assessment, and we found that having a smart, committed, and trustworthy coordinator made all the difference to our research project. We leveraged the Assessment Coordinator's expertise to stay focused on a project that produced valid and useful results from an in-depth learning assessment to measure student learning in an English Language Learners program. Our presentation focuses on the people connections that made this assessment work: between librarian collaborators, with students and instructors in the ELL program, and all the way upstairs to our University-wide assessment coordinator. We'll talk about how we designed our assessment and - phew - let go of post-instruction evaluation forms. Participants will get a fresh look at how information literacy assessment can benefit from upstairs-downstairs collaboration (floor plan not included)!
