Groundwater is defined as water located below the ground in the zone of saturation. It is stored in geological formations called aquifers such as sand and gravel. Surface water is water stored above ground in lakes, rivers, and oceans. Aquifers can be unconfined, confined by impermeable layers, or leaky where they interact with semi-permeable layers. Pumping tests are conducted to determine the yield of wells drilled into aquifers.
