Importance of Physical Activity
7th Grade Physical Education
Ms. Flores

the importance of physical
education.

distinguish between the five
components of health-related
physical fitness.
• Students will be able to come up
with physical activities for each of
the fitness components.
4.2 Identify physical activities that are
effective in improving each of the health-
related physical fitness components.
4.3 Match personal preferences in physical
activities with each of the five components
of health-related physical fitness.
4.5 Describe the role of physical activity
and nutrition in achieving physical fitness.
FREE WRITE EXERCISE
You Try Think about a time you were exercising
whether it be running, playing tag with
friends, or even riding a bike. Describe
what you think your body was going
through when performing those
Example When running, heart rate goes up, there is
a lot of muscle contraction and body
temperature was rising.
LETS THINK ABOUT IT
While we are moving, what is it that our
bodies are really doing? Why is it that
participating in physical activity is so
important that our doctors, our parents, our
school and even our peers are always telling
us to do it?
WHAT IS MOVEMENT?
Movement is any changes in the position of any of your body parts relative to one
another.
In our own words: your body moving.
What is physical activity?
Answer: Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy
expenditure.
In our own words: any movement that requires energy.
SO WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Lets go back and think about our free write exercise. Our example was running. For
some of us, we love to run. A reason why we do it, is so we can stay healthy, right?
So now ask yourself this: Do you go up the stairs to fifth period to stay healthy? No,
you do it because you have to get to class. You aren’t really thinking about walking up
the stairs or have an end goal for it.
Therefore, physical activity is movement that is voluntary AND is directed towards a
goal.

movement and who is participating in
physical activity? Why?
A DEEPER MEANING
In order to fully understand why physical activity is important, we must know of the
five components of fitness. These components are essential in telling us if we are
achieving the right level of fitness in order to maintain good health.

HOW DOES P.E. HELP WITH MY
ACADEMIC CLASSES?
You must be wondering,” But how does it boost my academic learning?”
For one, P.E. helps develop cooperative and social skills. This means that whenever
you are paired or grouped up with others to do a project, you would already know
how to be a team player because of P.E.
For others, they might be dealing with stress and anxiety that prevents them from
focusing in school, but P.E. helps reduce that for them. This way they are able to
achieve their goals in their classrooms.
Just how you are able to set goals up in P.E., it comes in handy when you are trying to
improve in your English class by setting up a goal of reading more books a week.
To really answer the question, there are just too many ways P.E. can boost academic
learning.

APPLY IT TO THE REAL WORLD
By using the knowledge you have just learned you will apply it to real physical activity.
Attend an afterschool (home) game and find the five components of fitness one
player is participating in. Please be able to list down exactly what their activity is
pertaining to the component and what you think their body is going through. Lastly
list a couple of benefits this player might be receiving by participating in physical
activity.

Its more than just moving!
