The document discusses the key concepts of REST (Representational State Transfer), which include resources, representations, operations, hypertext, and statelessness. REST aims to build distributed systems that are simple to understand and scale well by applying these concepts. Resources are uniquely identified and manipulated via standard operations like GET, PUT, POST, and DELETE. State is stored on clients rather than servers to improve scalability and redundancy.

Representational state transfer (REST) can be thought of as the language of the Internet. Now with cloud usage on the rise, REST is a logical choice for building APIs that allow end users to connect and interact with cloud services. This talk will deliver more insight into the challenges on building and maintaining good and clean RESTful APIs.

HTTP messages are how data is exchanged between a server and a client. There are two types of messages: requests sent by the client to trigger an action on the server, and responses, the answer from the server.

RESTful Architecture is effectively an implementation of Resource-Oriented architecture (ROA). ROA - is a good fit for Service oriented Architecture (SOA) implementation. Check out KickStartPros approach on RESTful API Design.
* REST = REpresentational State Transfer
* REST is Resource Based Representation. REST identifies things by JSON or XML & URIs.
* REST behavior/actions are identified by HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE).
* Using Uniform Interface Architecture with REST you can decouple Client (like Browser/Android App/iOS App) and Server.
* REST using Layered System and Cacheable Architecture gives better performance.
This talk introduces Spring's REST stack - Spring MVC, Spring HATEOAS, Spring Data REST, Spring Security OAuth and Spring Social - while refining an API to move higher up the Richardson maturity model
A RESTful API is only truly RESTful if it uses hypermedia to tell us about all the actions that can be performed on the curent resource, allowing us to traverse the API from a single entry point.
His session looks at REST and HATEOAS (Hypermedia As The Engine Of Application State) to illustrate good service structure. Ben will use the RESTful file sharing service fdrop.it to illustrate the various examples of how this can be used.
This session is recommended for architects and senior developers alike and will give a good grounding in writing excellent, self-explanatory RESTful services.
The Internet is full of Web Services, everyday more and more. Some services offer API (application programming interface) that developers use to build new applications (mash-ups). One of the most known and used technology for the machine-to-machine communication is SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) but in the last years we can use another paradigm, ReST (Representational State Transfer). How does it work?

WARNING: This will be an opinionated webinar.
Among Web architects and API designers we've seen growing interest in HATEOAS as a valuable approach to RESTful Web APIs. In this Webinar, we'll introduce the core principles, look at examples, and explore the value of the approach for API providers and application developers.
Join this live Webinar with Brian Mulloy to discuss the fundamentals and to explore the trade-offs of providing and consuming HATEOAS APIs.
If you can't join the live webinar, register and we'll send you a video recording.
We Will Discuss »

Pros and cons of using HATEOS for RESTful API design
CRUD APIs can be a very powerful tool. However, simply PUTing and POSTing entities can lead to anemic endpoints that lack business value. Go beyond the traditional CRUD API and provide more expressive and meaningful REST endpoints with an API crafted with a commanding paradigm.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.
Listen to the keynote address and hear about the latest developments from Rachana Ananthakrishnan and Ian Foster who review the updates to the Globus Platform and Service, and the relevance of Globus to the scientific community as an automation platform to accelerate scientific discovery.

Enhancing Research Orchestration Capabilities at ORNL.pdfGlobus
Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
