The Big Question? “ The Historian, with every justification, will come to the conclusion that we were very stupid men...” Harold Nicolson, British diplomat, 1919. How far do you agree with the quote in relation to the Treaty of Versailles? Level 1 [1-3] Simplistic answer. Poor structure / lacking in detail / historical facts/figures  Level  2 [4-6] Agrees with the quote. Developed argument. Beginning to show signs of structure. Level 3 [7-11]  Disagrees with the quote. Solid argument. Clear structure / sound use of grammar – key words spelt correctly etc.  Level 4 [12-15] Balanced answer. Explains how the quote can be agreed with : discusses the role of hindsight. Analyses how the quote can be disagreed with : people at the time were pleased with the Treaty. Perfect use of punctuation, spelling etc. NB Max L2 If pupil does not discuss the Treaty of Versailles and the background to it (i.e. Dates, key people etc) Max L2 if pupil does not mention the fact the TOV is a long term cause of WW2 – and briefly discusses how this is so Max L2 if pupil spells key words incorrectly / poor use of capital letters / incorrect dates etc

  • 3. The Big Question? “ The Historian, with every justification, will come to the conclusion that we were very stupid men...” Harold Nicolson, British diplomat, 1919. How far do you agree with the quote in relation to the Treaty of Versailles? Level 1 [1-3] Simplistic answer. Poor structure / lacking in detail / historical facts/figures Level 2 [4-6] Agrees with the quote. Developed argument. Beginning to show signs of structure. Level 3 [7-11] Disagrees with the quote. Solid argument. Clear structure / sound use of grammar – key words spelt correctly etc. Level 4 [12-15] Balanced answer. Explains how the quote can be agreed with : discusses the role of hindsight. Analyses how the quote can be disagreed with : people at the time were pleased with the Treaty. Perfect use of punctuation, spelling etc. NB Max L2 If pupil does not discuss the Treaty of Versailles and the background to it (i.e. Dates, key people etc) Max L2 if pupil does not mention the fact the TOV is a long term cause of WW2 – and briefly discusses how this is so Max L2 if pupil spells key words incorrectly / poor use of capital letters / incorrect dates etc
